JOSE MOURINHO claims his new haircut shows he is ready for a Premiership war - and Manchester United are ready to fight him and Chelsea every step of the way.

That was the message last night from boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who says six points from United's two league games against the Blues will wreck Mourinho's bid for a third straight title.

"Those two games will be instrumental in winning the league. If we can beat them twice - and that's our intention - then that's a strong platform for us," he said.

The giants meet at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 26 - just after the 20th anniversary of Fergie's arrival at United - and at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 14.

But Sir Alex's optimism looks unfounded. In eight meetings with Mourinho's sides, he has emerged triumphant only once - with the Portuguese chief winning five.

Fit-again striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted United must break Chelsea's new-found domination of the Premiership this season and end their own three-year wait to reclaim the domestic crown.

United have failed to win the title since the 2002-03 season and veteran star Solskjaer thinks the new campaign promises to be a defining one for the club.

A fourth successive year without the title would almost certainly herald Ferguson's (right) departure.

"This is a massive season for us. We won the Carling Cup last season but that's not enough for a club like us," Solskjaer said.

"It's been three years since we won the title and ending that run has to be our main target."

Yet there is little evidence that United are ready to overhaul the champions.

While Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all strengthened their squads with major signings this summer, United fans are still waiting for their first new arrival, and striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is poised to leave Old Trafford in a £15million deal.

United's pre-season tour of South Africa, from which they returned yesterday, offered little to back up Fergie's claim that his current crop of emerging young players can make the same impact as the Class of '92.

While the likes of Kieran Richardson, Darren Fletcher, Phil Bardsley and Giuseppe Rossi are undoubted talents, they are not as advanced as David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers were when they broke into the first team.

And for all the talk of the arrival of a world-class central midfielder to replace Roy Keane, the sum total of United's progress on that front has been a failed bid of £10m for Tottenham's Michael Carrick.

Moreover, the fact Ryan Giggs continues to be deployed as a central midfielder, as he was on the South Africa tour, exposes United's glaring failure to sign a recognised big-name player to fill that position. And while Fergie claimed Chelsea were "hell-bent on ruining football" with their seemingly limitless transfer funds, United fans are entitled to feel aggrieved over their manager's failure to spend anything to close the gap.

With van Nistelrooy likely to leave this week for Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, United are set to make an improved bid for Carrick, although even if the England midfielder does end up at Old Trafford, he is certainly not the midfielder to replace Keane.

The fact United ended the final game of their South Africa tour - which they lost 4-3 on penalties to Kaizer Chiefs after drawing 0-0 - with Giggs and Scholes up front says everything about Fergie's problems.

With van Nistelrooy possibly heading to Real and no sign of a replacement striker, United's options up front seem as limited as those in midfield.
