The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) says the aircraft supporting Sunday's search effort covered a total of 59,000 sq km (22, 780 sq miles) south-west of Perth. Two Chinese military Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft and two Japanese P-3C Orion aircraft will join the search on Monday.

Japanese P-3C Orion aircraft arrives at RAAF Base Pearce on Sunday to assist in the search

Royal Australian Air Force Flight Lt Russell Adams tells reporters at RAAF Base Pearce, where the reconnaissance planes have been have been taking off and landing, that such a major search operation is worthwhile. "We might do 10 sorties and find nothing, but on that 11th flight when you find something and you know that you're actually contributing to some answers for somebody," he explains.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) saysthe search operation for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean has concluded for the day. There were no sightings of significance. Amsa says the search area experienced early sea fog particularly in the western areas, however conditions improved during the day.

Likewise, ACARS is there to help engineers diagnose faults quickly prior to getting their hands on the aircraft, not as a tracking tool. It is about time that people understood that the world is still a big place.

Aviation experts still think MH370 was hijacked, says report

"" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;">

MARCH 23, 2014

Sixteen days into the search for MH370, some veteran pilots and aviation experts believe that the Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRO) might have been a victim of hijacking. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 23, 2014.Many theories had been forwarded in the past two weeks regarding the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, but aviation experts and seasoned pilots told Singapore's the Sunday Times they still believe the aircraft may have been hijacked although not necessarily for ransom or other demands.

"It's possible there was something or someone on the plane that was important enough for an organisation or group to stage this," a pilot with more than 25 years' experience, who asked not to be named, told the Sunday edition of the Straits Times.

Although the media had been asking for the cargo manifest, Malaysia Airlines had not made it public.

Instead, the airline had merely said that there were several tonnes of mangosteens and lithium-ion batteries on board.

"" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;">

Paul Yap, who heads Temasek Polytechnic's aviation school, told ST that two weeks after the plane vanished en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, the signs still pointed to a deliberate takeover of the plane.

Authorities have said that they believed the plane's communication and tracking systems – the transponder, and the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) – were deliberately turned off.

The fact that this happened just as the flight was leaving Malaysian airspace and entering Vietnamese airspace raised a red flag, the ST report said.

"When a handover happens, there is some sort of a radar 'black hole'. Nobody is really watching. In this particular area, the communications are also a little patchy and sometimes we have to call a few times to make contact," another pilot who has been flying for 30 years told ST.

He said someone with this knowledge would be aware that that would have been the best time to take over the aircraft and chart a new course.

Yap told ST that the plane’s erratic movements after air traffic controllers lost contact with it did not seem consistent with a mechanical fault or some other in-flight catastrophe.

The person or people responsible were probably trying to escape radar detection, he said.

Many pilots do not believe there was a fire or that the plane was trying to land in Langkawi as there was no distress call from the cockpit, said the ST report.

Even if there is total engine failure at 10,700m, a plane can continue to glide and pilots have about 15 to 20 minutes to do what they need to and send alerts, the report said.

In 1998, Swissair flight 111 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after smoke filled the cockpit and cabin. But not before the pilots reported the emergency.

Seven years later, Greek carrier Helios Airways crashed into a mountain when a lack of oxygen incapacitated the crew. Again, the pilots had time to send out a distress signal.

"Unless the plane broke up mid-air or there was an explosion, and both theories seem to have been ruled out, there is really no reason why the pilots could not call in an emergency unless they did not want to or were prevented from doing so," a 30-year veteran pilot told ST.

A retired United States Federal Aviation Administration official, Michael Daniel, said even if the debris located in the southern Indian Ocean belongs to MH370, that was not enough evidence to rule out hijack or any of the possibilities that have surfaced so far. – March

MH370: More aircraft joins the search operation

PERTH: The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) aircraft in the Australian Search and Rescue Region has resumed this morning, with further aircraft joining the operation out of Perth.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reiterates this is a challenging search operation for flight MH370 which has been missing since March 8.

AMSA is using all satellite imagery and information available in its search area development. Both civil aircraft engaged by AMSA and military aircraft from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, China and Japan are all assisting in the ongoing search operation to provide the best chance of locating objects captured by satellite imagery with the naked eye.

AMSA has tasked a total of 10 aircraft today to search for possible objects in the search area about 2,500 kilometres south-west of Perth.

The weather forecast in the search area is expected to deteriorate with rain likely.

Today’s search is split into two areas within the same proximity covering a cumulative 68,500 square kilometres.

Three civil aircraft will be involved in search activities today. These are two Bombardier Global Express planes and an Airbus aircraft.

A total of 20 State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from Western Australia will again be air observers on board the civil aircraft. Ten volunteers will be on board the Airbus, and five volunteers will be on each of the Bombardier Global Express aircraft.

All three civil aircraft will also have an AeroRescue Aviation Mission Coordinator on board. AeroRescue is AMSA’s contracted provider of dedicated search and rescue services from locations across Australia.

Two Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft from China have been tasked by AMSA to join today’s search, together with two P3 Orion aircraft from Japan. The two Chinese aircraft are now en route to the search area.

The United States Navy P8 Poseidon will also be part of today’s search activities, along with two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P3 Orion aircraft.

HMAS Success remains in the search area. A number of Chinese ships are en route to the search area to assist in the location of objects possibly related to the search.

Malaysia Airlines MH370: Search for missing plane shifts north after French satellite spots debris

Updated 9 minutes ago
The hunt for debris from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 off thecoast of Western Australia is shifting north, after French satellites pickedup floating objects outside the current search zone.
This morning Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said the latest sighting ofdebris was about 850 kilometres north of the search area which aircraft andships had been scouring since Thursday.
He said the overall search area had now been extended to cover 68,000 squarekilometres.
"Certainly the areas where debris has been picked up by satellites is ofparticular interest, and they're the focus of a lot of the searching," Mr Truss told Radio National.
"The French sighting is a piece of new material because that is in a completelydifferent location. That is about 850 kilometres north of our current search area. "So we need to check that out as well."
Malaysia's transport ministry said the French images showed "floating debris".

Malaysia said it immediately relayed the French images to Australian authoritiescoordinating the search, but gave no details of the number, size or preciselocation of the objects.
Mr Truss said the debris in the French images was not in an area authoritieshad identified as the most likely place where the aircraft may have entered thesea.
"We still don't know for certain that the aircraft is even in this area," he said. "We are just clutching at whatever little piece of information comes along to tryand find a place where we might be able to concentrate the efforts." He also said Tropical Cyclone Gillian, near Christmas Island, could bring badweather south, hindering search efforts.
"It is a very difficult task. The weather yesterday wasn't too bad, although therewas early morning fog," he said.
"Today we expect the weather to deteriorate and of course the forecasts aheadare not all that good.
"So it's going to be a challenge, but we'll stick at it."
The pilot of one of the Royal Australia Air Force Orions involved in the searchsaid conditions had been challenging.
Flight Lieutenant Russell Adams said there had been heavy cloud cover and his crew was not able to spot any debris.
"We're working directly with Rescue Coordination Centre Australia as one smallcog in this giant effort," he said. "We're going out there for two, three hours at a time, so the satellite imagery isgoing through the centre and we've been tasked appropriately through them. "As per the effort that my crew's putting in we couldn't be more proud of theboys and girls."

No sign of debris in challenging search conditions
Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard, including six Australians.
Authorities last night completed a fourth day of sorties into the search zone, where they are now also searching for an object that China identified yesterdayas being 22 metres long and 13 metres wide.
The object was spotted about 120 kilometres south-west of two possible objectsseen on satellite images taken on March 16 and announced by the AustralianGovernment on Thursday.

The Chinese satellite images were taken on March 18 by the high-definitionEarth observation satellite Gaofen-1.
Eight aircraft were involved in yesterday's search and the Royal AustralianNavy's HMAS Success was also in the area.
Chinese and Japanese military aircraft are due to arrive in Perth today to help.
Australian Air Force Commander Craig Heap says it is fantastic to have twoJapanese P3 Orion planes helping with the operation.
"We have worked many times with the JMSDF (Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force) over the years, especially the P3 crews," he said. "They are highly professional and they'll bring a tremendous capability to thisoperation. "They bring a P3 which is an extended range, specifically designed for maritimepatrol. "They're also extremely professional aviators."

On Saturday, a civilian plane reported sighting a number of small objects closetogether in the search zone.
A P3 Orion aircraft flew over the area but could see nothing but seaweed.
The Orion dropped a marker buoy to track movement of the material and amerchant ship has been sent to locate and identify it.
Speaking from Papua New Guinea yesterday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott saidone of the objects was reported to have been a wooden pallet.
"Obviously we have now had a number of very credible leads and there isincreasing hope, no more than hope, that we might be on the road todiscovering what did happen," he said.

Malaysia has enlisted 25 other countries to help hunt for the plane.

Kesan palet kayu kargo, tali pengikat

- AFP
