When Forman arrived at the scene of the fire, he was a well-known photographer for the Boston Herald. When the fire escape fell, what had begun as him documenting the rescue of a young woman and child suddenly changed.
The two started to fall, and he kept shooting as they fell. He photographed them swimming through the air. When Forman realized he was watching a woman fall to her death, he dropped his camera and turned just in time.
This iconic photograph won Forman a Pulitzer Prize. However, its most significant impact is the ethical issues it highlights about when a photographer should stop shooting and whether it is acceptable to publish unsettling photographs. It also prompted a number of municipalities to enact stronger fire-escape safety regulations. |
