The Falling Man is one of the most famous and compelling photographs in history. This sad image was captured by photojournalist Richard Drew in September 2001, just after the 9/11 attacks. At the time, the city of New York was still suffering from the catastrophe that had occurred only a few days before, and it appeared that all hope had vanished. But as Richard stood on the observation deck of his nearby hotel, staring down, he noticed a terrifying sight happening in front of him: a guy plummeting to his death from one of the massive towers that had been hit by a plane.
This single photograph, taken at just the right moment, came to represent the many tragic losses and brave acts that transpired on that horrific day. While The Falling Man has subsequently come to represent a nation's grief and strength in the face of monumental difficulties, it is also widely regarded as an ode to both human resilience and photographer Richard Drew's extraordinary talent behind the lens. Today, The Falling Man serves as a timeless reminder of how far we will go in the face of catastrophe. |

Astronaut Neil Armstrong took the iconic shot known as The Moon-landing during the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Though the event is frequently viewed as a solitary feat in human history, it is actually the result of innumerable efforts and years of hard work carried out across various eras of modern civilization.
The first man-made items to reach beyond Earth's atmosphere date back to the early 1900s, when scientists sent several unmanned balloons into space. These exploration technologies enabled humanity to begin to make sense of the expanse of outer space, paving the way for future missions that would transport people into space.
Throughout decades of testing and research, scientists gradually increased their grasp of what it would take to reach the moon. Inspired by these accomplishments, a small team of engineers and astronauts met at NASA in 1959 to begin planning a manned voyage to our nearest cosmic neighbor. This team was directed by legendary aerospace engineer Wernher Von Braun, who would act as a mentor to many Apollo 11 crew members, leading them through their arduous route to ultimate achievement.
Neil Armstrong took his iconic shot on the moon's surface in July 1969, following years of preparation and intense training. |

Lange's timeless photograph of Florence Owens Thompson and her children lying on her shoulders at a camp for those devastated by the collapse of the pea crops, taken for the United States Farm Security Administration, is packed with dread and anguish. Lange’s work is regarded as a classic in American art and international photography, and it has become a symbol of the plight of migrant farm workers during the Great Depression. |
