Korean box office paints a pretty " Portrait"

Local release scores well despite sex content restrictions

Written by Han Sunhee

SEOUL -- " Portrait of a Beauty", a local period drama dominated at the Korean box office over the weekend. Pic grossed $2.3 million from 500,000 admissions during its four day run on 538 screens. The results were particularly encouraging for the film, which did well despite a lackluster week and audience restrictions due to its strongly sexual themes.

Released on the same day, local pic "Antique" also did decent business, ranking at No.3 with $1.9 million from 536 screens. Comedy, about a rich man's son and his quest for true love, skewed to younger audience demographics than " Portrait," particularly towards students who finished college entrance exams in Korea last week.

Last weekend's topper "Quantum of Solace" maintained a wide 591 screen screen release but slipped to No.2, adding $1.4 million from 311,000 weekend admissions, taking its cume to $6.6 million.

"My Wife Got Married" ranked at No.4 in its fourth weekend, with $317,000 while "Bank Job" took fifth place adding $197,000 from 261 screens to its total of $2.2 million.

Among new releases, a Swedish horror "Let The Right One In" ranked at No.8 with $92,000 while helmer Randall Miller's "Bottle Shock" opened at No.10 with $89,700 from 124 screens. Releases were handled by Guam and Lotte Entertainment respectively.

'General Hospital' a cheerful sequel

MBC struck ratings gold for two years running with medical dramas "Behind the White Tower" and "New Heart." Now the broadcasting channel is going for a third win by resurrecting an oldie.

Fourteen years have passed since "General Hospital" aired in 1994. And now, in the hopes that a revival of a past favorite will keep viewer ratings up, "General Hospital 2" is coming to TV screens across the nation tonight.

But in a market saturated by international medical dramas, namely America's "Grey's Anatomy" and "House," and Japan's "Iryu-Team Medical Dragon," MBC's latest medical installment will need novel plot twists and a fresh approach if it wants to wow audiences already numbed by gruesome surgeries, high-stakes stories and touching moments of humanity.

On second thought, a hefty dose of comedy just might do the trick.

Kim Jung-eun/Cha Tae-hyun[MBC]

And judging from the lead actor and actress, Cha Tae-hyun and Kim Jung-eun, it looks like MBC is going for a feel-good and laugh hard approach. "I want to make it as fun and cheerful as possible," said actress Kim, 32, at the press conference held last week.

Co-star Cha will be joining in on the fun by playing the usual dimwitted yet lovable sidekick. When asked about his tendency to get typecast into comedic roles, Cha, 32, answered: "I am not an actor who tries to play radically different characters."

Standing in his scrubs, actor Cha -- who bowled Asian audiences over in "My Sassy Girl" (2001) -- looked every bit the part. Wearing an expression of childlike wonder, he posed for the press, not, it seems, as Cha, but as first year resident Choi Jin-sang.

Kim Jung-eun, also in scrubs, joined Cha on stage, carefully putting on a pair of spectacles to pose as Jung Ha-yoon, a first year resident who wants to become a lawyer that specializes in medical lawsuits.

While her character has entered the profession with a vindictive purpose in mind, namely to use her expertise against doctors, Kim Jung-eun refrained from pulling a "Kill Bill." "I think it is more realistic to mix humor with melodrama, rather than just be a dark and vengeful character," she explained. "So, I went for a lighthearted approach."

But not everything will be fun and games on "General Hospital 2." And while both Kim and Cha are more known for their comedies, "General Hospital 2" director Noh Do-chul testified to the hard work this pair put into their roles as surgical residents. "These scenes are made from the broth of their sweat," he said.

According to Noh, both Kim, Cha, and fellow cast members took part in a three-day workshop at the Catholic University of Korea Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital. They slept for two nights in the hospital's dormitories, shadowed both surgical and medical emergency residents and took part in morning rounds.

A firm believer in teamwork, director Noh even brought his gargantuan cast, which includes four members who starred in the original "General Hospital," to the press conference.

Noh's commitment to his team and his decision to film the series at the Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary's and Kangnam St. Mary's Hospitals may help him pull off the crucial balance of humor, wit and drama needed to make "General Hospital 2" worth watching.

"General Hospital 2" airs tonight on MBC at 9:55 p.m.

'General Hospital 2' Return to Small Screen

By Han Sang-hee

A string of medical dramas, including "Behind the White Tower" (MBC) and "Doctor Bong" (SBS), have recently swept the Korean drama scene. However, these dramas would not have been possible if not for "General Hospital," the first medical drama in Korea. After 14 years, "General Hospital" is returning.

Familiar faces from season one _ Lee Jae-ryong, Cho Kyoung-hwan and Kim So-hee _ are on aboard for the second season 2. Lee is no longer a struggling first-year resident but a mature, self-possessed staff doctor. Cho retains his position as general surgeon while Kim is now the head nurse.

The spotlight is now on the new first-year residents _ Kim Jung-eun plays Jung Ha-yoon, Cha Tae-hyun plays Choi Jin-sang and Ryu Jin plays Baek Hyun-woo. Ha-yoon is a law school graduate with an ulterior motive. Having passed the bar exam, she joins the medical profession only to become a medical malpractice litigation specialist.

Her agenda is to look at the hospital from a patient's point of view and to expose the doctors' hypocrisy. But as she works shoulder-to-shoulder with her colleagues, she gradually becomes a real doctor. Joining Ha-yoon is Jin-sang, a regular troublemaker who has fumbled his way through medical school, just to live up to the expectations of his toiling mother. His knack for trouble continues, especially with Ha-yoon at his side.

Baek Hyun-woo is the ultimate elite doctor, but he's got no heart, figuratively speaking. He warms up to Ha-yoon though, helping her in some of her wild adventures, yet is unable to explain his mixed feelings towards her.

"I wanted to avoid all the politics and power play dominant in American and Japanese medical dramas and focus more on human relationships between doctors and patients," said producer Noh Doo-chul at a press conference held last week.

He also added that "the characters here are more realistic and multi-dimensional. For one, Ha-yoon's character starts off from a unique position as an aspiring lawyer that strives to reveal medical hypocrisy. Jin-sang is also an aberrant character that adds diversity to the conservative image of doctors while Hyun-woo is a figure that embraces both elitist aloofness and human compassion. As such, there is no simple black-or-white conflict but a more complicated and realistic portrayal of characters and relationships."

This is Cha and Kim's second medical drama together. Different from their doctor-patient relationship in the 1998 drama "Sunflower" (MBC), this time they meet as resident colleagues. But they said that they intend to keep the previous drama's comical element. "Cha and I have a wonderful chemistry together and we see no reason to avoid this playful aspect of our relationship, since it's what we think the audience will enjoy as well," Kim said.

"General Hospital 2" will start Nov. 19, Wednesday, 9:55 p.m. on MBC.

Actress Moon Becomes Cyber Bullying Target

By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

Moon Geun-young

Just a few days after top actress Moon Geun-young wowed fans with the surprise revelation of her secret donations to the poor, she has fallen victim to malicious comments on the Internet.

The Community Chest, a leading charity group here, last week announced a list of its top individual donors revealing the No. 1 giver抯 name as an "anonymous actress in her 20s" who has donated more than 850 million won ($597,000) over the past five years.

Despite the actress抯 requests to keep her name secret, the charity group, after being harassed by the press, finally confirmed the 21-year-old donor was Moon.

Following the revelation, however, she was subject to cyber attacks by people who called her donations politically motivated. Her private blog and articles praising her behavior were bombarded with numerous nasty comments belittling the donations as a way to enhance her reputation and her career.

Also, a conservative columnist claimed Moon's donations promoted communism in Korea, citing her late grandfather's pro-North activities. Her late grandfather Ryu Nak-jin was a pro-communism guerrilla in the South during and after the Korean War (1950-1953) and refused to convert right up to his death in 2005.

In an article, Ji Man-won, said, "This is part of communist-led psychological warfare aimed to beautify a descendant of the communist. Articles speaking highly of her donations help make people respect communists as activists striving to reunite the two Koreas.拻

In reaction to the cyber bullying, the opposition Democratic Labor Party made a rare statement calling for it to end. "Her grandfather was a victim of our heart-wrenching history. We should not take it as a means to criticize those with different ideology," it said.

Her agency vowed to take a wait-and-see approach. Legal experts said those producing such malicious comments can be punished. "If an article was written apparently to insult a specific individual, the writer can be punished even if the article doesn抰 include any type of abusive language," said Prof. Park Kyung-sin at Korea University抯 college of law.

Meanwhile, Gangnam Police Station is gathering information on the malicious writers for an investigation at Moon抯 request.

Stars Delve Into Fashion, Beauty

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Wonder Girls have come out with a cosmetics line while Rain presents
his fashion style, right

Koreans adore their celebrities and some ardent ones constantly try to get their hands on anything stars adorn, including clothes, cosmetics and even medical products. Smart stars not only share, but now offer their own brands.

Singer and actor Rain recently announced that he will launch his clothing line, Six to Five, next year, while pop group Wonder Girls and even comedian Park Myung-soo have come out with a cosmetic line and a hair product business, respectively.

Fashion brand Six to Five was created by Jtune Creative, an affiliate of Rain's agency, Jtune Entertainment. Some of the company's pieces were already presented to the public when Rain wore them at his comeback performance last month. Under the concept "intelligent vintage," Six to Five will bring a trendier wardrobe for fans and fashion lovers.

"With an elegant and formal burgundy velvet jacket, baggy denim and long military boots, we believe Rain's outfit portrayed our concept to the fullest. Simple and classic, but with a hint of vintage," Lee Jong-mi from the Jtune Creative design team said.

Six to Five will officially launch its line next year with a spring and summer collection. Park Jin-young, the CEO of JYP Entertainment that once nested Rain, brought the five-member Wonder Girls to fans last year and now the girls have something to offer in return.

With the help of cosmetic line CLIO, the girls have launched a cosmetic line, Peripera Wonderline. The brand offers six different cosmetic products ― Wonder Ever Pact, Wonder BB Cream, Flash Wonder Base Wonder of Lips, Wonder Shot Blusher and Wonder Duo Mascara and Liner ― each of which the members themselves chose and designed.

"The girls participated in the whole process, from packaging designs, the products and even advertisements, despite their busy schedule," JYP Entertainment said.

The agency added that the products are targeting young girls who want to try make-up but are cautious in using cosmetic lines that are either too expensive or too heavy to wear everyday. Fans can find Peripera Wonderline through its Web site, www.periperashop.com .

Meanwhile, Park Myung-soo, the star comedian from the popular entertainment program "Infinity Challenge," launched his own shopping Web site selling none other than heukchae, a powder product bald people tend to use instead of wigs. Park became the talk of the town with it, leading him to create an Internet shopping mall for men and women who are also worried about their hair lines.

The Web site www.geosungmall.com not only offers products certified by Park's experience, but also a counseling corner where users can share their problems with a doctor and other information boards that will come in handy. Stars jumping into their own businesses and appearing in advertisements are nothing new, but some worry about downfalls.

Kang Seung-koo, a professor of the department of media arts and sciences at Korea National Open University, said that "association" is what brings success and also failure. "There is a gap between a certain product and the image of a celebrity. The customers think about the image of the star and then try to connect it with the product. If this is not properly done, the product is bound to fail to win the hearts of customers,'' Kang told The Korea Times.

The professor also mentioned specialty and professionalism, which are key factors in starting or maintaining a business. Attracting fans with popular stars is one thing, while purchasing and using the product is another.

"In the case of Christian Dior or Benetton, the heads were already famous and talented designers and businessmen, which made their brands reliable. But if you hire a celebrity who has no knowledge or expertise in that certain area, it might bring some attention first, but some customers will start to question the quality,'' he said.

The worries should help customers think again before plunging into celebrity products, and also work as a reminder for stars who are considering expanding their stardom into various areas.

In the 49th-day tribute for this ill-fated actress, her close friends and family members have gathered at her grave site to remember her life. The ceremony was held in the morning of November 19th at the Gapsan Cemetery in Yangsuri, Gyeonggi Province with Choi抯 mother and brother (actor/singer Choi Jin-young), and her closest friends comedienne Lee Young-ja and actress Shin-ae.

Notably absent was Choi抯 ex-husband and former baseball star Cho Sung-min, who抯 currently embroiled in a controversiol custody battle with Choi抯 family. He was seen at the cemetery on November 18th, the day before the 49th day ceremony, to avoid media attention and an encounter with Choi抯 family and friends.

Cho had given up his parental right over their two children after his divorce from Choi. But his parental right was automatically restored upon Choi抯 death, which can also give him custody of her two young children and their inheritance, which is presumed to be in millions of dollars. Choi抯 family and women抯 advocate groups have rallied against Cho抯 rights over children and Choi抯 assets and urged the government to change the laws on parental rights. Meanwhile, Cho has denied his interest in the money, but has insisted on having visiting rights to see his children and carry out his fatherly duty.

TV host Kang Byung-kyu admits to illegal gambling

Kang Byung-kyu, host of KBS' popular variety show "Vitamine," has admitted to illegal internet gambling. But he claims that he did not know internet gambling was illegal.

Kang (36), had initially denied gambling on an internet site that broadcasted Baccarat through a live online feed from the Philippines. But after prosecutors traced a paper trail leading to the baseball player turned presenter, Kang admitted to the charges.

He said that because the Philippine government permitted online gambling, he did not question the legitimacy of the site or his involvement. He is reported to have gambled some 1.6 billion won ($1.1 million), with losses of 400 million won. "Kang has accepted and admitted all allegations of his involvement with the illegal gambling activities," said the Seoul Metropolitan Police narcotics and organized crime unit.

Prosecutors are now considering seeking an arrest warrant for the TV presenter.

Kang Byung-kyu

Earlier on he and his management had denied all accusations and charges, with Kang even saying, "I do not know how to gamble." Kang is one of 130 illegal gamblers being charged for involvement with the gambling site.

According to prosecutors, his use of his real name in his account with the site may help his case. Most illegal gamblers use aliases and dummy accounts to cover up the trail leading back to them. Since Kang did not conceal his activity, they say, this could support his claim that he did not know the illegitimate nature of his activity.

Kang was in the news earlier this year. He was accused of wasting government money as the head of a group of Korean celebrities that went to the Beijing Olympics to form a cheer squad in support of Korean athletes.

The 40 participating celebrities took advantage of the unlimited expenses provided by the Culture Ministry, racking up a bill of 210 million won in 10 days, lodging at five-star hotels and flying first class, roundtrip.

Kang hosted "Vitamine" for 6 seasons since 2002, but KBS has reported they are looking for a replacement. The broadcaster denied that they were searching for the replacement because of the recent controversy surrounding Kang. Instead, the company said the decision to replace Kang was due to differences over pay.

Story of S. Korean tycoon's karaoke assault to be made into film

SEOUL, Nov. 20 (Yonhap) -- The story of a South Korean tycoon convicted last year in a notorious assault case is to be made into a film, a film production company announced Thursday.

The Seoul-based Ever Cinema said it would make a film based on the memoirs of a former police officer who was in charge of the case. Kim Seung-youn, chairman of the South Korea's 12th-biggest conglomerate, Hanwha Group, was convicted last year of kidnapping and assaulting several bar workers at a karaoke bar last year after finding out they had beaten up his son in a nighttime scuffle.

The case was first reported by Yonhap News Agency and became sensational in South Korea. "We have obtained the copyright for the film version of the memoir 'Cops 25 Hours' from Kang Dae-won, a former superintendent at a police station in the Namdaemun ward of central Seoul.

Kang was a veteran cop who was widely known in the country for apprehending a serial killer and a child molester in 2004 and 2006, respectively. "The film will weave together plots based on the criminal cases Kang dealt with," the production company said in a press release.

He was sentenced to a suspended jail term for stopping the investigation into the assault case on his boss's orders.
