Sven Savours 'Body Blow'Tue 12 Feb, 09:09 AM
Sven-Goran Eriksson feels his Manchester City side have dealt a "body blow" to Manchester United's title hopes.
City inflicted a first home league defeat of the season on United on Sunday after goals from Darius Vassell and Benjani Mwaruwari secured a 2-1 success at Old Trafford.
With Premier League leaders Arsenalstretching five points clear by beating Blackburn on Monday, City bossEriksson reckons his side's win could play a role in the title race.
"You never know how important it could be," said Eriksson in the Daily Mirror.
"You win the title in March and April, but this is still a body blow to Manchester United's hopes."
Eriksson was pleased with the improvement in performance from hisplayers compared to the previous week's 3-1 home defeat to Arsenal.
He added: "The difference between our games against Arsenal andUnited was our approach. In the first 30 minutes against Arsenal wedidn't disturb them. We only conceded three free-kicks and what's thatagainst the likes of Fabregas?
"I'm not saying go out and kill them, but go out and disturb them at the very least, pull their shirts sometime.
"But against United it was a completely different attitude and fighting spirit.
"What we did against United, we should have done a week ago againstArsenal. We learnt our lesson and went out and did a perfect jobagainst them." |

UEFA Cup - European Power Rankings Eurosport - Tue, 12 Feb 11:05:00 2008
We present a UEFA Cup Power Rankings special, with our system pointing to Everton as the British side best-placed for success.
We take into account both domestic and European performances, plus the relative difficulty of each team's league, to find out who isthe best team in Europe.
Our rankings suggest Everton andRangers have by far the best chance of UEFA Cup success, coming in asecond and eighth respectively.
The number make grim reading for the other three British teams in the competition.
Tottenham's recent revival is not enough to take them into the top 20 but they do have cup specialist Juande Ramos at the helm.
Bolton and Aberdeen are rated as having no chance - they fill two of the bottom three positions with the Dons dead last.
To add insult to injury, the pair face off against Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich - ranked third and sixth respectively.
Overall ranking - including Champions League teams - in brackets. See below table for how the formula works:
1 (9) Villarreal - 19.80
2 (10) Everton - 19.71
3 (11) Atletico Madrid - 19.58
4 (14) Panathinaikos - 19.20
5 (15) Bordeaux - 19.10
6 (16) Bayern Munich - 18.81
7 (18) Hamburg - 18.72
8 (20) Rangers - 18.24
9 (21) Basel - 17.73
10 (24) Benfica - 16.63
11 (25) Spartak Moscow - 16.53
12 (26) Werder Bremen - 16.26
13 (27) Bayer Leverkusen - 16.05
14 (29) Rosenborg - 15.81
15 (30) Fiorentina - 15.30
16 (32) Slavia Prague - 14.75
17 (33) PSV Eindhoven - 14.67
18 (34) Zenit St Petersburg - 14.13
19 (35) Getafe - 14.09
20 (36) Galatasaray - 13.81
22 (39) Tottenham Hotspur - 13.49
30 (46) Bolton Wanderers - 11.47
32 (48) Aberdeen - 9.28
HOW IT WORKS
Wetake into account a combination of both domestic and Champions Leagueperformances, factoring in the relative difficulty of each team'sleague, to find out who is the best team in Europe.
Scores are based on points per game in domestic league and European games.
Domesticpoints per game are multiplied by the league coefficient - either 4,4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.
Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win and multiplied by a coefficient of 5.
UEFA Cup victories are counted as three points for a win and mulitplied by a coefficient of 4.
Domesticand European totals are then added together. If a side has played inboth Champions League and UEFA Cup, its European total is an average ofthe two scores.
League coefficients:
England, Spain, Italy = 5
Germany, Portugal, France = 4.5
Others = 4
Example: Villarreal
42 points from 23 Liga games = 1.83 points per game.
Multiplied by league coefficient of five - 1.83 x 5 = 9.13
16 points from 6 UEFA Cup games (including qualifying) = 2.67 points per game.
Multiplied by UEFA Cup coefficient of four - 10.67
Total score = 9.13 + 10.67 = 19.80

Liverpool's miserable season just got worse... Benitez to be sacked?
Liverpool's miserable season reached an all-time low today as they crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Barnsley.
It all looked to be going well for the Reds when Dirk Kuyt put the Premier League side in the lead after a half an hour of the game but Barnsley came out in the second half and snatched a goal just before the hour mark.
Stephen Foster the Barnsley hero as he headed home from a Martin Devaney cross. It looked as though the tie would go to a replay but an injury time goal from Brian Howard prevented that and sent the travelling Barnsley fans into mayhem.
Liverpool got into the fifth round of the FA Cup by narrowly escaping an embarrassing result against non-league side Havant & Waterlooville and today weren't as lucky.
Rafa Benitez' men currently lye fifth in the Premier League three points behind arch rivals Everton and the same margin outside a Champions League place. They face Inter Milan in midweek in the first knock-out round of the Champions League and if today's performance is to go by they will be hammered by the Serie A side.
Benitez has this season been under pressure by new owners Tom Hicks and George Gillet and this result will only pile more and more pressure on the Spaniard. Although I can't see the Americans sacking Benitez just yet I feel if they fail to get a result on Tuesday then it may be time for Benitez to pack his bags and leave Anfield.
What do you think? Will Benitez be sacked or will he survive? |
