Mon, October 22, 2007 (3:22pm EDT)

"Tengoku wa Mada Tooku," a best-selling novel by author Maiko Seo ("Koufuku na Shokutaku"), is being made into a movie, starring Rosa Kato.

10,000 show up for X Japan
Mon, October 22, 2007 (4:49pm EDT)

Legendary rock band X JAPAN publicly reunited for the first time in ten years on Monday. They gathered on the rooftop of Odaiba's Aqua City to film the video for their new song, "I.V.," which is being used in the horror movie "Saw IV."

About 42 million yen was spent for the shoot, which included aerial shots from a helicopter and the use of about 6 tons of "rain" from a sprinkler truck. A large monitor was set up in a parking lot, where (according to promoters) more than 10,000 fans gathered to cheer on the band.

The band had planned to hold an information session inside a nearby hall, but because of the size of the crowd, they decided to use the monitor instead. Yoshiki announced that the band has plans for a single concert in Tokyo next spring.

Tsumabuki plays teacher in semi-documentary
Mon, October 22, 2007 (6:27pm EDT)

Satoshi Tsumabuki will be starring in a semi-documentary film, currently titled "Buta ga Ita Kyou#su." This is his first role as a teacher.

The movie is based on the true story of a class of sixth graders at an elementary school in Osaka. A rookie teacher suggested an educational project that involved the class raising a pig so that they could later eat it. The project naturally led to differences of opinions among the students.

The story was turned into an award-winning TV documentary in 1993. The film version will also be shot in the style of a documentary. A class of 28 children, chosen by audition, will actually live with and raise a pig. While the general plot will follow the real-life story, there is no detailed script - producer Toshiaki Suzuki hopes to capture the true reactions of the children.

The movie is scheduled for theatrical release next fall.

Chiaki Kuriyama to star in Group Sounds film
Mon, October 22, 2007 (9:36pm EDT)

Actress Chiaki Kuriyama will star in a movie titled "GS Wonderland," about the Group Sounds genre of rock music that was popular during the 1960s.

The story follows a fictitious short-lived band called The Tightsmen. Kuriyama portrays organ player Miku, who is ordered by her management agency to pretend to be a man as part of the band. Her co-star is Takuya Ishida.

SEAMO, Sukima Switch songs used as themes for Production I.G. film
Tue, October 23, 2007 (9:00pm EDT)

Production I.G.'s animated short, "Tokyo Marble Chocolate," is premiering at a special screening on the 27th as part of the ongoing Tokyo International Film Festival. Details about the film were made public on Tuesday, including an announcement that songs by hip-hop artist SEAMO and pop duo Sukima Switch are being used as themes for the movie.

"Tokyo Marble Chocolate" is set in the near future in a Tokyo where two towers stand tall above the rest of the buildings. It tells a love story between a young boy named Yuta and a young girl named Chizuru, depicting their first Christmas together.

The film is made of two episodes, each from the point of view of one of the protagonists. Chizuru's side is titled "Mata Aimashou" after the SEAMO song, while Yuta's side is titled "Zenryoku Shonen" after the Sukima Switch song.

Both artists make special appearances in the film. SEAMO plays the voice of one of Chizuru's senpais at the cafe where she works, while the Sukima Switch members play a pair of employees at a pet shop that Yuta is connected to. This is SEAMO's first time as a voice actor.

"Tokyo Marble Chocolate" is being released on DVD on December 19. Two trailers have been posted on the movie's website.

Masami to host at Kohaku?
Thu, October 25, 2007 (2:45am EDT)

The media have picked up on rumors that actress Masami Nagasawa is being heavily considered as the Red Team host at the upcoming Kohaku Uta Gassen. Usually, selected hosts are celebrities who serve major roles in NHK shows. For example, Yukie Nakama was the team's host for the past two years because she appeared in the taiga drama "Komyo ga Tsuji," and Takako Matsu hosted in 1996 when she appeared in "Hideyoshi." Most of the time, the host is one of the network's announcers.

Even though Nagasawa hasn't done anything big for NHK and has nearly zero experience as a TV show host, the network seems to be banking on her immense popularity at the moment. She frequently appears at the top of celebrity rankings and has a very clean image.

Nagasawa is currently busy filming for the drama series "Hatachi no Koibito," but that ends in mid-December, and her schedule is said to be clear after that.

Because of her inexperience, if she does get chosen as a host, the White Team host will most likely be a TV show veteran. The members of SMAP are among the names being circulated as strong possibilities. An official announcement is expected to be made by mid-November.
