Cathay Opens Five New Screens in Johor Baru City Square

By Chin Vin Sen

22 Dec - Cathay Cineplex Johor Baru City Square opens five new screens today (22 Dec). This doubles the number of screens to 10 with seating capacity increased from 1,425 to 2,240.

In addition to the new halls, existing screens and facilities have been given a facelift. The cineplex is also equipped with Digital Projection, which allows for the screening of movies in digital format and is also electronically enabled for alternative forms of entertainment such as 'live' EPL and World Cup matches to be screened.

Box-office and concession counters are strategically located on both levels 5 and 7, and the cineplex will also introduce automated booking facilities such as the Interactive Voice (IVR) booking via telephone and online Internet booking. Other facilities include an alfresco garden terrace where patrons can relax while waiting for the movie to start.

This latest extension now offers JB cinema-goers a choice of three sizable multi-plexes of over 2,000 seats each, namely this 10-screen Cathay at City Square, TGV's recent 10-screen cineplex in Tebrau City and GSC's five-screen Pelangi Leisuremall.

The official opening and re-launch party featured movie character appearances as well as the premiere of Cathay-Keris Films' "Flyboys". In conjunction with the relaunch, Cathay Cineplex Johor Baru City Square will donate RM1 for every ticket purchased between 22 Dec to 25 Dec 2006 to welfare home, Pertubuhan Anak Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Johor.

Golden Screen Cinemas blooms in Penang in 2007.

By Pairamaporn Buranakol

27 December - The Pearl of the Orient looks set to be an even more exciting place for local movie-goers in 2007! With the latest Queensbay Mall which opened up on 1 December this year (2006), Golden Screen Cinemas will be extending its cineplexes to Penang's latest mall, catering to the increasing number of movie patrons on the island.

To be officially called the "GSC Queensbay Mall", the cinema which is located on the third floor in the south end of the mall will have a total of 8 screens, and 1512 seats, making it the second largest cinema in the state.

Although not officially announced by GSC yet, expectations are that if all goes well, it will be open for business on the 25 January (Thursday). Cinema-goers already used to the opening of new cinemas may also be looking forward to a range of pre-opening movies for its patrons to catch for free from earlier the same week.

Another added feature will be the online purchase facility, on which the tickets can be purchased online and paid for by credit card, making it GSC's fourth cinema location with this feature. Other locations include GSC One-Utama, GSC Mid Valley and GSC Gurney Plaza, with an exception ? moviegoers purchasing tickets to GSC One-Utama and GSC Mid Valley are able to pick up their tickets at an automated redemption kiosk, but those purchasing tickets for GSC Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall would need to pick them up at the reservation counter.

GSC's other cinema location on the island, GSC Gurney Plaza had a relatively quiet time on the day before Christmas Eve. Normally packed with movie-goers, especially during a weekend, the crowd was smaller than usual in the afternoon. Gurney Plaza Penang, which has 12 halls has a total capacity of 1856 seats, includes a premiere screening hall and an international screen hall which also caters for films being screened in digital format.

Another Cineplex is also expected to open sometime in mid 2007, in the now revived Sunway Carnival Shopping Complex project in Seberang Perai when it is completed. Sources have indicated that GSC will be the operator of this six screen location.

Other notable cinemas on the island are the two Cathay Cineplexes located in in Bukit Jambul's shopping complex, with a total of 6 screens, and Prangin Mall with 4 screens. On the mainland (Seberang Perai), Mega Cineplex Prai consists of 6 halls, with a total of 1473 seats, while in The Summit Bukit Mertajam, Golden Screen Cinemas operates a 3-screen cineplex with a capacity of 707 seats.

GSC Movie reservations in Penang can be made online at www.gsc.com.my, www.cinema.com.my and by phone on 04-2223456.

TGV Cinemas opens six-plex in Metro Prima Kepong in February 2007

By Chin Vin Sen

29 Dec - Long served by only a 3-screen GSC in Selayang and a cluster of cineplexes across the LDP Damansara toll in One Utama and the Cineleisure Mall, residents of Kepong and the entire north east area of Kuala Lumpur will soon have a new choice. Over the last few months, renovations had been going on to put up an extension on the rooftop car park of AEON Metro Prima to accommodate a now essential shopping mall tenant - a cineplex.

As the mall was not originally designed to accommodate a cinema within its shopping floors, it was decided after an extensive survey that the top floor of the rooftop car park would be the only feasible option. Reinforcements were installed on the beams below the cineplex level, and renovations done to provide escalator access from the mall. Patrons will either need to continue up the escalators on the east end through two floors of car park to reach the cineplex, or park on any of the three rooftop parking levels for more direct access.

The cineplex itself occupies a space covering more than 100 parking bays, and is visible from the main road. This week, sound and vibration insulation materials and paneling are being shipped in and should be installed over the next two weeks. AEON personnel based on site have indicated that cinema operations could begin around 8th February 2007 if all goes well.

In a recent discussion with TGV Cinemas, Cinema Online had also been informed that TGV Cinemas' focus this year will mostly be on the opening of the 6-screen TGV Metro Prima Kepong early 2007 and their 8-screen TGV Cheras Selatan by mid 2007.
