Eri Fukatsu takes Best Actress in Montreal
Tue, September 7, 2010 (2:20am EDT)

On Monday in Montreal, actress Eri Fukatsu (37) was awarded Best Actress at the 34th Montreal World Film Festival. She received the prize for her role in Sang-il Lee's "Akunin," which stars her and actor Satoshi Tsumabuki (29).
Fukatsu is the first Japanese to win Best Actress at the festival since Yuko Tanaka (55) took it in 1983 for her performance in "Amagigoe." However, Japanese have won other awards at the festival in recent years, including Yojiro Takita's "Okuribito" in 2008 (Grand prix des Americas) and Kichitaro Negishi's "Viyon no Tsumabuki" in 2009 (Best Director).

Japan vies for Academy Award with Tetsuya Nakashima's "Kokuhaku"
Wed, September 8, 2010 (6:34pm EDT)

Director Tetsuya Nakashima's latest film, "Kokuhaku" ("Confessions"), has been selected as Japan's entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at next year's Academy Awards. The choice was announced on Wednesday by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan.
Starring Takako Matsu, "Kokuhaku" is a tale of a junior high school teacher's revenge against the students responsible for the death of her young daughter. The film opened in Japan on June 5 and has been very successful - so far, more than 2.9 million people have watched the movie, grossing more than 3.7 billion yen in box office receipts.
The Academy Awards will narrow down the Best Foreign Language Film submissions to a list of five nominees in January of next year. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on February 27, 2011.

Arashi and AKB48 help set a new record for singles sales

J-pop idol groups, Arashi and AKB48, have help set a new record in singles sales according to Oricon.
For the 9/6 weekly rankings, this year’s total (dating from 2009.12.28-2010.8.29) has exceeded 34,087,000,000 yen.  It’s been a whole five years since the fiscal year numbers have been surpassed.  This surge was due in large part to Arashi’s “Troublemaker” (ranked no.1 during the week of 9/6 and sold 696,000 yen worth) and AKB48’s “Ponytail and chou-chou” (ranked no.3 and sold 630,000 yen).
When looking at the top 10 ranking artists, these two groups’ sales take up more than half of the total. Arashi took three spots: 1st with “Troublemaker”, 2nd with ”Monster” (692,000 yen), and 5th with “To be free” (507,000 yen). AKB48 also took three spots: “Ponytail and chou-chou” in 3rd, 4th with “Heavy Rotation” (592,000 yen), and 7th with “Sakura no Shiori” (385,000 yen).
Over the course of the past couple of years, music DVD sales have had a firm holding as well, with a 139.9% markup that is expected to continue for some time. Arashi’s “ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5×10” was #1 and sold 740,000 yen, while TOHOSHINKI’s “TOHOSHINKI VIDEO CLIP COLLECTION –THE ONE-“ ranked 2nd and sold 172,000 yen.  Eight out of the ten spots were taken by male artists.

Charts: NEWS, EXILE
NEWS claimed #1 on the sales charts this week with their 4th album "LIVE," selling 156,000 copies. This is their fourth consecutive chart-topping album, but it also gives them their 20th consecutive chart-topping release (includes albums, singles, and music DVDs).
Foreign artists Linkin Park and Maroon 5 ranked #2 and #4 respectively with their latest albums. A Vocaloid collection entered at #5, while KREVA, Rina Aiuchi, and THE BACK HORN took the #7 through #9 spots.
On the singles chart, EXILE hit #1 with "Motto Tsuyoku," selling 152,000 copies. This gives them their first number-one single (by Oricon's classification) since last summer.
Also in the top ten this week were new singles from UVERworld (#2), YUKI (#4), Takamiy (#5), Erina Mano (#7), and THE BAWDIES (#8).
On the DVD chart, Hey! Say! JUMP sold 88,000 copies of their new release, giving them the #1 overall spot and their highest first-week DVD sales ever. Meanwhile, the box set for the "Kaibutsu-kun" drama series (starring Arashi's Satoshi Ohno) was #2 at roughly 22,000 copies. That number surpassed the overall sales for popular American shows such as the seventh season of "24" (21,705 copies) and Volume 1 of the first season of "Fringe" (21,526) to become the current highest-selling DVD for any drama series so far this year.
On the Blu-ray rankings, the "K-On!!" anime series ranked #1 with 28,000 copies of its 3rd volume. This gives the franchise (including the first season) total Blu-ray sales of 348,000 copies, overtaking "Bakemonogatari" (331,000 copies) as the #1 anime series in history on Blu-ray.

Yusuke Yamamoto has a girlfriend

This week's issue of FRIDAY reports that young actor Yusuke Yamamoto (22) was seen with a woman at his apartment earlier this month. The woman, said to be 21 years old, entered the apartment building together with Yamamoto and spent the night there. The two left the building at different times the next morning.
FRIDAY says that Yamamoto and the woman have been dating for less than a month. Yamamoto's agency also stated that he met the woman about 1 or 2 months ago, but described her as a close friend. The company asserted that work should be the priority for Yamamoto, and they have told him that directly.
