Portsmouth signs frustrated England striker Jermain Defoe from TottenhamPosted: Thursday Jan 31, 2008 8:09 PM
PORTSMOUTH, England (AP) -Portsmouth signed Jermain Defoe fromTottenham on Thursday after the England striker decided to switch clubsbecause of a lack of first-team opportunities.
The 25-year-old striker, who was left out of Fabio Capello's firstEngland squad after starting just three English Premier League gamesthis season, joined Pompey for about 9 million pounds (US$18 million;?12 million).
"I've not been playing football so you can't expect to get in theEngland squad and I totally understand,'' Defoe said. "I just want toplay some football and score some goals.''
Defoe had been saying in interviews that he wanted to stay atTottenham despite stalling over a new contract to replace the one thatwas set to expire at the end of next season.
Tottenham manager Juande Ramos preferred to pair Robbie Keane andDimitar Berbatov, with Darren Bent also in contention for a place inattack.
Ramos and Defoe made up after arguing in training in early January, with Defoe even captaining Tottenham against Sunderland on Jan. 19, butSpurs agreed to a fee with Portsmouth and told the player he couldleave.
Defoe, who played under Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp at WestHam, scored 64 goals in 177 appearances for Spurs since joining fromthe Hammers in 2004.
"He will be a great signing for us. He wants to play and he needs to play,'' Redknapp said.
Pompey striker Benjani Mwaruwari was expected to leave for Manchester City.
The Zimbabwean striker passed a fitness test at City, which signedanother forward late Thursday - Ecuador's Felipe Caicedo from FC Basel.
The 19-year-old Caicedo has scored two goals in 15 internationals and featured in last year's Copa America.

| | Allardyce - hit back at Newcastle.
SAM: TOON TOO SMALL FOR ME
Former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has risked inciting the angerof the Geordie fans by claiming the Magpies were not a big enough clubfor him and insisting the St James' Park outfit "didn't live up to myambitions".Allardyce arrived in the north-east confidently brandishing afive-year plan to restore success to Newcastle but was afforded justeight months at the helm after a change of ownership brought MikeAshley to the club.
He dispensed with Allardyce's services after a disappointing start to his tenure and eventually replaced him with Kevin Keegan.
But former Bolton boss Allardyce, who has yet to take a new role infootball, has absolved himself of any blame for his aborted stint withUnited.
"When you get sacked, reflection is a difficult scenario. The onething you have tio evaluate first and foremost is how much of it wasyour fault," he told The People.
"I think you can accept it a lot more if you can come to terms withthe fact that a good percentage of it was your fault - but that doesn'tapply to me at Newcastle."
And Allardyce went on to claim that suggestions he was not up to thetask of rebuilding a club famously starved of silverware in recenttimes were wide of the mark.
"The usual rubbish that goes when someone like me is sacked from aclub like Newcastle is that that job was too big for me. That's justnot true.
"If I'm honest the reverse is probably true. Newcastle probablywasn't big enough for me - it didn't live up to my ambitions in theshort time that I was there. And because it didn't do that the clubmissed a chance to realise its own ambitions.
"The more I analyse it, the more I come to the conclusion that it was never about me or results.
"It was about things they wanted to put in place."
