Wanchope Calls It A Day

Costa Rican legend Paulo Wanchope has announced his retirement from football. The striker, 31, was forced to call time on his career after repeated struggles with match fitness

Costa Rican striker Paulo Wanchope has decided to hang up his boots, bringing to an end a 12-year career in football.

Wanchope has endured an ongoing struggle to regain match fitness in recent times, and finally decided the time was right to call it a day.

"I always gave 100 per cent to do things as well as possible," said the striker in a statement.

"Sadly, my last performances were far from good enough and I have taken the decision to retire.  It was a difficult decision to take, but it has to be taken.

Too Big A Task

"The truth is that in the last six months I had to make a great effort to recover after games and training," continued the statement.  "I gave everything and we all know about my knee problems.

Of course, I will continue my career related to football as I have a great passion for this sport."

Around The World: Clubs And Country

Wanchope played 75 times for his country, finding the net on 45 occasions, including during last summer's World Cup finals in Germany, where Costa Rica were eliminated in the group stages.

Wanchope began his career with Costa Rican side Herediano in 1994.  Three years later he received his big break as Derby County offered him a move to the Premier League.

England was undoubtedly where Wanchope spent his highest profile years, enjoying subsequent spells with Manchester City and West Ham United before then embarking on a world tour that featured Malaga, Al-Gharrafa, FC Tokyo, Rosario Central and finally MLS team the Chicago Fire.

La Liga - Boca make Riquelme bid  Eurosport -  Tue, 20 Nov 11:49:00 2007

Boca Juniors have formally requested to buy Juan Roman Riquelme from Villarreal.

The Argentina playmaker fell out of favour with LosSubmarinos Amarillos last season and was sent on loan to Boca inFebruary, where he became an instant hit and led them to the CopaLibertadores title.
However, a proposed permanent transfer atthe end of August fell through and the 29-year-old ex-Barcelona man wasforced to return to Spain.
And, in the light of alleged interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Juventus, Boca want to seal a permanent deal as soon as possible.
"Theidea is to hire Riquelme from November 30th and sign him on a threeyear contract," Boca vice president Pedro Pompilio declared. "It's awish that we all have at Boca and it would be very positive forArgentinian football."
Pompilio had a meeting with Villarrealdirector Juan Manuel Llaneza on Monday night in Buenos Aires and theywill meet again on Tuesday afternoon.
"We will keep on having conversations in the next hours for seeing if we can reach to an agreement," Pompilio continued.
"There are several points to be resolved but we have faith."
Llaneza, meanwhile, admitted that "the transfer of Riquelme could be possible"and confirmed that he will be in the Argentine capital for a few moredays to advance negotiations.
Boca ideally want Riquelme to play in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next month but are prepared to wait until January.
"Ifwe don't manage to arrange an agreement with Villarreal to haveRiquelme with us for December then we expect to have him in January andfor the 2008 Copa Libertadores," the secretary of Boca Juniors, JoseBeraldi, added.
Riquelme would cost in the region of 8 million euros.

Leeds Rocked By Robins

Mon 26 Nov, 12:15 AM

Steven Gillespie's 86th-minute strike earned Cheltenham a shock 1-0 win over Leeds at a sold-out Whaddon Road.

The Robins' third league victory of the campaign lifted them off the foot of the table and denied Leeds the chance to make up ground on the leading clubs in the division.

Leeds were guilty of missing a host of opportunities, with leading scorer Jermaine Beckford the main culprit.

Beckford struck the crossbar in the first half and fired over with the goal gaping midway through the second period.

But Cheltenham made Leeds pay when debutant goalkeeper David Lucas rushed off his line to head clear a long ball from Andy Lindegaard.

The ball fell to Gillespie, who lifted the ball into an empty net from 30 yards to send the home fans wild and condemn Leeds to their second league defeat of the campaign.
