Manchester United's Wayne Rooney did not let the disappointment of Wednesday's 2-0 defeat in the Champions League final stop him hailing Barcelona's Andres Iniesta as the world's best player.

Iniesta was instrumental as the Catalans controlled midfield to claim their third European Cup with relative ease. He laid on Samuel Eto'o's 10th-minute opener before Lionel Messi sealed victory with a rare header in the second half.

"They are a brilliant team and I think Iniesta is the best player in the world at the moment," the forward, among the English champions' biggest disappointments on the night, told reporters.

United made a bright start with FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo having a number of chances, but it was a one-sided affair after Eto'o struck and Rooney admitted his team were comprehensively beaten.

"They scored their goals at good times and made it difficult for us" he said.

"Barcelona pass the ball so well and if you don't take your chances they punish you."

Defending champions United, in contrast, were uncharacteristically careless with possession and Rooney was one of the worst offenders.

He made no secret of how bitter the defeat tasted.

"I'm hurting at the moment, but we've got to get over it and look to next season," he said.

Manchester United fan in Nigeria killed four people when he drove his minibus into a crowd of Barcelona supporters after his team lost the Champions League final, according to police.

Police said the Red Devils fan was so annoyed when he drove passed the jubilant Barcelona fans that he made a U-turn and ploughed into them.

The police spokeswoman said 10 people were injured, four were killed and the driver was arrested.

"The driver had passed the crowd then made a U-turn and ran into them," she added.

The incident happened in the Nigerian town of Ogbo where both Champions League finalists have large fan bases.

Rio Ferdinand says United were simply not good enough on the night as the Reds lost their European crown to a hugely impressive Barcelona side.

Goals from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi in each half secured a deserved victory for the Spaniards. Ferdinand was magnanimous in defeat, but remained hugely disappointed by United's uncharacteristic showing.

"We just didn抰 play well as a collective team and we didn抰 play well as individuals," he told MUTV. "If you don抰 do that at times like this then you don抰 deserve to win.

"We抳e got no qualms, we weren抰 good enough, we didn抰 play the way we can. If you do that in a final, you tend to get beat. You've got to give credit to Barcelona, they played well. We needed to play our best football and we just didn't produce it."

While defeat was hard to take, Ferdinand insists United are proud of the season's achievements and will learn from the experience in Rome.

揥e were all aware we抎 had a good season up to now and the last day of it would determine how our summer goes," he explained. "It抯 a bit of a low point to finish it on but we抳e got strong characters in the squad and I抦 sure we抣l be back next season."
