Throughout 2016, foreign officials showered then-President Barack Obama with gifts seemingly meant for a post-presidential “man cave” — including bottles of Italian wine, an Australian billiards cue, a Jordanian chessboard, a cured ham leg from Spain, and a complete set of William Shakespeare’s works, courtesy of Great Britain.

The gifts appear on a legally required list compiled and released each year by the State Department. The gifts aren’t bribes, and Obama probably won’t even get to enjoy most of them. They may go on display at his future presidential library, but U.S. officials must pay the Treasury fair market value of any presents they want to keep for personal use.

While this happens relatively rarely, the list released on Wednesday shows that former Secretary of State John Kerry bought a $2,200 bronze sculpture of a Mongolian on horseback (gift of Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj). And Kerry also acquired, at a price that could not be immediately determined, a brass-inlaid wooden chest from Kuwait’s foreign affairs minister.

The most expensive package Obama received came from King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz al Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family, which has been one of  the most lavish benefactors of American presidents. Here’s how the State Department describes it:

“Sculpture of a Bedouin group, entitled ‘The Small Caravan,’ including two men and three camels, painted in gold and silver and decorated with precious stones, mounted on green granite. Silver tone letter opener with golden Falcon handle and silver tone Chopard pen.”

Value? $56,720.

WASHINGTON: Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton outpaced President Barack Obama last year in receiving lavish gifts from foreign leaders.

Clinton received gold jewelry worth half a million dollars from King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. The State Department said the gift included a necklace bracelet, ring and earrings. The white gold was adorned with teardrop rubies and diamonds. Clinton also got gold, sapphire and diamond jewelry worth $58,000 from Brunei's queen.

Obama's most expensive gift was a $16,500 gold-plated clock from Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the Saudi defense minister.

Obama, a big sports fan, scored a red, white and blue basketball from, and autographed by, Chinese President President Xi Jinping.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, gave Obama a customized Dunlop table tennis table with United States and United Kingdom decals and paddles worth $1,100.

The gifts were among a bounty of vases, watches, artwork and other items given to the Obama family and top US officials in 2012, according to the department's Office of Protocol, which catalogs the gifts and publishes an annual listing.
But don't look for Clinton or Obama to pocket the gifts. Under law, most of them must go to the National Archives or General Services Administration, unless recipients reimburse the US Treasury for them.

Di malaysia hadiah2 dari foreign leaders boleh shimpan dalam almari dan bagi pada anak cucu mereka. Undang2 UMNO

Mmg betul Raja Abdullah ada beri hadiah bernilai jutaan ringgit kpd Michelle Obama tapi undang2 berkenaan hadiah kerajaan asing di US menyatakan hadiah yang berjumlah lebih daripada RM1,500 kena serah kpd kerajaan dan kalau nak juga utk peribadi, kena keluarkan duit sendiri utk membeli hadiah tersebut dpd kerajaan US.
