Houllier gets Liverpool war-chest
Wed 21 Apr, 12:02 PM
LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has been told he can have 30 million pounds to spend on new players to break into the English elite dominated by Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Houllier has already earmarked 14 million pounds for Auxerre striker Djibril Cisse and the rest would come from the sale of some of his Anfield flops and new money-raising schemes.

Senegal pair El-Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao, who cost a combined 14 million pounds less than two years ago, and French defender Djimi Traore are tipped to be offloaded, along with England striker Emile Heskey who cost a club record 11 million pounds.
Cisse's Auxerre team-mate Philippe Mexes, Nottingham Forest youngster Michael Dawson and Ajax's Hatem Trabelsi have been linked with the Merseysiders.
Liverpool need some high-profile summer purchases to persuade England striker Michael Owen to finally commit to a long-term deal.
Anfield chief executive Rick Parry admits Chelsea's new-found wealth will make it tougher for Liverpool to attract their targets.
Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich has splashed out 140 million pounds on new players since buying the London club last July.
"Obviously Chelsea's millions have moved the goalposts somewhat, but we are going to do everything we can to get to the top again," Parry said.
"It will take lots of application and effort to get there and I promise there will be plenty of that."
A big-spending strategy is a calculated risk for Liverpool, who already have a sizeable debt after two seasons without any significant Champions League interest.
Liverpool are currently ahead of Newcastle only on goal difference as they chase the fourth place in the Premiership that opens the door to the top European competition next season.
But Parry is adamant that a fourth-place finish in the Premiership is not good enough for a club whose fourth and last European Cup was in 1984 and who have not won the league since 1990.
Houllier, who achieved a treble of FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001, has been regularly criticised by former Liverpool greats for wasting the Anfield money on a string of duds.
"I'll hold my hands up in the knowledge that some of the recruits have not delivered," Houllier said at the club's annual general meeting in January. |
