Rooney berpeluang beraksi jumpa Bayern

- REUTER

- Reuters

The Return Of Robben

Dutchman has 'not come here just to sit in the stands'...
By Richard Evans
Apr 6, 2010 5:45:00 PM

Bayern Munich speedster Arjen Robben has declared himself fit to play against Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday night.

The news will give Bayern a boost as they look to defend a 2-1 first leg lead at Old Trafford.

The Dutch ace missed the victory at the Allianz Arena with a calf injury, but the winger insists he has recovered sufficiently to play a major role in return fixture.

"I have not come here just to sit in the stands," he told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I am here so that's a good sign and I feel fit enough to play."

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid player is confident his side can progress to semi-finals, sending United crashing out of the competition.

"The pressure is massively on the shoulders of the United players, they know all we need is one goal and the game could be over," Robben said, according to the Daily Star.

"We have already shown we can beat the English team and we are confident we can do it again.

"We just hope [Wayne] Rooney does not make it as he is so important for United."

Which winger will prevail?

In Nani, Antonio Valencia, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, Manchester United and Bayern Munich possess four of the top wingers around at present. Goal.com UK's Matt Monaghan ponders which of the wide men could prove a Champions League match winner on Wednesday night...

Manchester United and Bayern Munich will be looking to their world class wingers to decide this week's Champions League decider.

The two heavyweights take to the pitch at Old Trafford on Wednesday with the German side enjoying a 2-1 advantage from the first leg of their quarter-final tie. With space at a premium across the pitch, both Sir Alex Ferguson and Louis van Gaal are sure to be banking on their wide men weaving their way through.

Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are the established names in Bayern's ranks, while Nani and Antonio Valencia are steadily developing in to fearsome flyers at Old Trafford.

Goal.com UK analysed their performance in every competition this season to find out which winger will make the difference on Wednesday night...

BAYERN MUNICH

Franck Ribery

Age: 26

Castrol Ranking: 224

Estimated value: £40 million - Burgeoning reputation after impressive form a year ago saw his transfer price rocket. Has fallen this season as injury and Arjen Robben's arrival has taken some of the shine off his valuation. Still capable of producing moments of fantasy but needs to prove his credentials on the biggest stage to become the 'next big thing.'

Appearances: 22

Goals: 6

Assists: 8

At the Allianz Arena: Mixed bag. Failed to make the most of youthful advantage against Gary Neville, but cashed in on some good fortune when poorly struck free kick deflected in to the back of the net. Wasn't at his best due to long spell on the sidelines, and minus a few clever tricks, looked off the pace.

What to expect on Wednesday: After starring at the weekend in the top of the table clash with Schalke, expect the French international to improve at Old Trafford. Opposite the inexperienced Rafael da Silva, there should be plenty of space to exploit as United push for the goals to see them through.

Arjen Robben

Age: 26

Castrol Ranking: 9

Estimated value: £28m - Reputation proceeds him. Only question marks about his fitness record and stomach for the fight stop him being named the best natural winger in world football. When he makes it on to the pitch, is often unstoppable and his goal against Fiorentina in the second round was worth its weight in gold.

Appearances this season: 27

Goals this season: 14

Assists this season: 6

At the Allianz Arena: Face was etched with frustration as injury robbed him of the chance of taking to the pitch.

What to expect on Wednesday: If, as expected, the Dutchman passes a fitness test the stage is set for a fantastic return to English football. As the key weapon on the counter attack he will be expected to re-produce the magic that saw Bayern through in the last round.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Nani

Age: 22

Castrol Ranking: 820

Estimated value: £22m - Has gone from the exit door to inking a new four-year contract in the space of a few months. United career seemed to be slipping away from him before a remarkable turnaround in performance has followed the New Year. Is now delivering on both feet as he lays on the service to the club's strikers and is one of the most promising young wingers in the game.

Appearances this season: 28

Goals this season: 2

Assists this season: 9

At the Allianz Arena: Took no time at all to get involved. Was felled by Martin Demichelis straight after kick-off and his deflected free kick landed on Wayne Rooney's boot for the opener. Toyed with the inexperienced Holger Badstuber and was only removed after some tough treatment from the Bayern defenders.

What to expect on Wednesday: More of the same. The Portuguese winger is in a rich vein of form and was excellent in defeat against Chelsea. Had always been capable of producing the unexpected, but is now delivering a consistent end product. United looked too functional in Germany with Park Ji-Sung on the left wing and Ferguson will correct this by placing Nani in to that spot.

Antonio Valencia

Age: 24

Castrol Ranking: 53

Estimated value: £27m - Has shaken off initial nerves at the Theatre of Dreams to grow in to a beast of a right winger. His speed and strength has ensured a profitable relationship with Rooney, with many of his assists coming from the England man's forehead. Room for development with his technical dribbling skill means his value can only increase in the future.

Appearances this season: 45

Goals this season: 7

Assists this season: 9

At the Allianz Arena: As a late substitute after Nani was surprisingly given the nod over him, had few chances to impress. One direct run led to a cross being blocked by Badstuber.

What to expect on Wednesday: United need at least a goal to proceed in the competition and the Ecuadorian will be expected to provide the spark. Pace should trouble the cumbersome Badstuber and distribution needs to be on the mark. Must step up to the plate and demand the ball from his team-mates. Still not audible enough on the pitch, and this was apparent against Chelsea where he had the beating of Yury Zhirkov but didn't call for possession enough.
