Leeds Fans In Despair
As always, the real losers in the demise of Leeds United are the loyal fans.

Ray Fell, the chairman of the Leeds United Supporters' Club, has described the Football League's imposition of a 15-point penalty on the stricken Yorkshire club as a "recipe for relegation."
Athough the League have agreed to let Leeds compete in the new season, it is only on condition that they start with a 15-point handicap because their administrator KPMG failed to secure a Company Voluntary Arrangement with the club's creditors.
Fell said the supporters were "shattered, but we're shattered every day at Elland Road."
He told Sky Sports News: "The only good news is that we will be able to compete in the league but the fans are bewildered by it all. It's a recipe for relegation."
Joe McLean, a football expert with financial ashowsdvisors Grant Thornton, believes the size of the penalty demonstrates that the League is trying to assert its authority.
Asked about the points deduction, McLean said: "I think it's fair in the sense that there have been 41 administrations in English football in recent years and they have all been concluded by a CVA.
"The League is signalling its intent to make sure its rules are not transgressed." |

English Friendly Wrap: Countdown To Ecstasy
There were a number of friendly matches involving English clubs today - some involving Premiership sides against leading Italian and Spanish clubs, and several that pitted top-flight outfits against lower-league opposition as the players and coaches get their engines into gear for the new Premiership season, which starts a week from today.
Among the prestige friendlies, Aston Villa beat Inter Milan 3-0, while Spurs were convincing 2-0 winners against Torino and West Ham came from behind to beat Roma 2-1. Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by Juventus, but Manchester City went down 1-0 at home to Valencia.
Domestically, a Manchester United XI beat Peterborough United 3-1, while Reading were 3-2 winers at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Portsmouth won 3-1 at Leicester in a friendly between Milan Mandaric's current and previous clubs.
Blackburn Rovers won 3-0 at near-neighbours Preston North End, and Wigan inflicted more misery on Leeds United by winning 2-1 at Elland Road.
Everton suffered a goalless draw against striker Andrew Johnson's former club Crystal Palace of the Championship.
Birmingham City won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, while Bolton were 2-1 winners at Colchester United.
Manchester United gave a debut to new signing Owen Hargreaves as they defeated League Two side Peterborough, who are managed by Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren, 3-1. The Canadian-born midfielder was joined in the team by a string of youth players as the first team were busy preparing for tomorrow's Community Shield match with Chelsea. United led at half-time through Adam Eckersley, but shortly after introducing Hargreaves at half-time United lost their lead throguh Rene Howe. However, Richie Jones and Chinese international Dong Fanzhuo ensured that Sir Alex had family bragging rights.
Reading concluded their pre-season preparations with a thrilling 3-2 win away to Championship side Wolves, who took the lead at Molineux after 14 minutes through Seya Olofinjana. However, the Royals hit back in style and went in at the break 3-1 ahead thanks to goals from Stephen Hunt, Bryn Gunnarsson and Paul Kitson on the stroke of half time. Steve Coppell made numerous changes and it allowed Wolves to hit back through a superb solo effort from substitute Jay Boothroyd, while in stoppage time Michael Kightly was denied by Reading's substitute keeper Federici.
Premiership got better of the Championship at the Walkers Stadium as well as Leicester were defeated 3-1 by Portsmouth. The Foxes took the lead through Ian Hume after just 14 minutes, but the lead lasted for seven minutes when big summer signing David Nugent converted from close range. It was relief for the former Preston keeper as he had earlier spurned two opportunities. Keeped David James prevented the home side from restoring their lead before Nugent turned provider and set up Lomano LuaLua just after the break and in the closing stages Franck Songo'o added a third.
Defenders showed the strikers how to do it as Premiership Blackburn demolished Lancashire rivals Preston 3-0 at Deepdale. Mark Hughes side, who have already been in competitive action in the InterToto Cup were in control from the start after Andre Ooijer netted in the first minute. Defensive partner Christopher Samba gave the Premiership a warning of what could becoming a deadly routine as he twice converted deadballs from the excellent Morten Gamst Pedersen in the second half. New signing Roque Santa Cruz was handed a debut in the second half and went close to scoring with a header.
A bad week for Leeds United continued as the Yorkshire club prepared for life in League One with a 15 point deduction by losing 2-1 at home to Wigan as the two clubs showed how their fortunes have altered so severely in recent years. Wigan's summer signing Jason Koumas was the star of the show scoring two goals for the Latis, the first on just one minute and the second midway through the second half. Jemaine Beckford had levelled for Leeds ten minutes into the first half, while there was no sign of Wigan's Leighton Baines, who has been chased by Everton and Sunderland this summer.
The Premiership again showed their superiority as Bolton won 2-1 at Layer Road against Colchester in a match full of early drama. Just six minutes into the game Kevin Lisbie got the Championship side off and running, but Gary Speed conveerted from the spot on 9 minutes and just over 60 seconds later Vaz Te continued to impress this summer with what turned to be the winning goal. However, on 26 minutes Clive Platt was dismissed for the home side.
Birmingham were also winners as new signings Liam Ridgewell and Garry O'Connor both found the net against Sheffield Wednesday. Ridgewell, who only signed from local rivals Aston Villa on Friday managed to open his account on just two minutes, while O'Connor netted midway through the second half. Another of Friday's signings Franck Queudrue also made his debut in a new look Birmingham back four.
It wasn't Premiership perfection though as Crystal Palace held Everton to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park as Andy Johnson failed to find the net against his former club, who gave him a rousing reception on his return. Palace's crossbar took a beating in the first half through Toffees' new signing Phil Jagielka and Victor Anchibe, while Everton had a penalty appeal turned down. |

Khas Utk Panatik MUFC
Aston Villa sounded their intentions for the new season loud and clear on Saturday with a highly impressive 3-0 victory over Italian champions Intenazionale at Villa Park.
Aston Villa 3 -0 Internazionale Milan
Gareth Barry led from the front, netting twice either side of a Martin Laursen strike in what was an all-action display from the Villa captain. The win gives Martin O'Neill plenty of confidence ahead of their opener against Liverpool next weekend. |

Ballack not the only player with plenty to proveTue 07 Aug, 02:03 AM
LONDON (Reuters) - Germany captain Michael Ballack has pledged his future to Chelsea and is determined to make amends for a disappointing debut campaign in England.
Dismissing rumours linking him with Real Madrid on Monday,midfielder Ballack said: "I came here to win trophies and be successfulin English football."
Ballack is just one of a number of top players with plenty toprove in the coming season. Reuters runs the rule over 10 other PremierLeague players who will fall under the spotlight as the 2007/08campaign kicks off:
* Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea)
The Ukraine striker arrived in London from AC Milan with a bigreputation - and a salary to match - but did little to justify either,his three goals in 30 league outings (the last in November) hardlyendearing him to manager Jose Mourinho.
The 30-year-old will be out to show he has learned from lastterm's lessons but sitting out the Community Shield with a back injurywas not the best start.
* Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
Embarks on his Premier League career carrying the twin tags of Liverpool'srecord 36.0 million euros (24 million pounds) signing and the mostexpensive Spanish player ever. Rafael Benitez is looking to the formerAtletico Madrid striker to spearhead a long-overdue challenge for thetitle but whether Torres can transfer his undoubted quality onto theEnglish stage -- and with the required consistency -- could be tellingboth for Liverpool's prospects and Benitez's reputation.
* Craig Bellamy (West Ham United)
It says everything about Bellamy that the defining moment of his Liverpool career was not a goal in the Champions League win at Barcelona but rather a drunken altercation with John Arne Riise several nights earlier. The Welshman -- who stayed just a season at both Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers -- has promised West Ham will "see the best of me" but whether he can stick around long enough to fulfil that pledge remains to be seen.
* Nigel Reo-Coker (Aston Villa)
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill will hope to see the dynamic box-to-box midfielder who shone in West Ham'srun to the 2006 FA Cup final, rather than the Reo-Coker whose formdipped last term amid accusations from some Hammers fans of anover-inflated ego. Villa's new boy impressed his boss in the friendlywin over Inter Milan but he must now do it week in, week out.
* Darren Bent (Tottenham Hotspur)
Eyebrows were raised when Tottenham Hotspur spent 16.5 million pounds on Charlton Athletic striker Darren Bent.Yet there is no doubting Bent's ability -- 31 goals in the last twoPremier League seasons -- and his transfer is a bold statement ofintent from both a club aiming to break into the top four and a playerkeen to establish himself in the England squad.
* Jason Koumas (Wigan Athletic)
Wales playmaker Koumas made little impact on the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion in 2004/05, yet a loan spell at Cardiff City restored his confidence and he shone as West Bromwent close to promotion last season. Now Koumas has a second chance inthe top flight with Wigan. Manager Chris Hutchings was willing to takea gamble on the 27-year-old whose success at the JJB Stadium will go along way to determining whether Wigan survive.
* David Healy (Fulham)
Healy's goalscoring exploits for Northern Irelandcontrast markedly with his club career. He scored nine times in sixEuro 2008 qualifers yet managed just one goal more in an entire seasonof second-division football for relegated Leeds United. It will be intriguing to see if his former Northern Irish boss Lawrie Sanchez can get the best out of him once more at Fulham.
* Michael Chopra (Sunderland)
Some Sunderlandsupporters were less than enthused by the 5.0 million pounds signing ofMichael Chopra, the forward having scored just once in four years forbitter rivals Newcastle United. However, after netting 22 times forCardiff last term, manager Roy Keane is hoping the 23-year-old canfinally blossom in the big league.
* Joey Barton (Newcastle United)
Barton's footballing ability is matched, unfortunately, by his capacity to cause trouble. Newcastlemanager Sam Allardyce is famed for his handling of difficultpersonalities but the midfielder's hopes of a fresh start have alreadybeen undermined by a metatarsal injury and an impending date in courtto answer charges of an alleged assault on former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.
* Eduardo Da Silva (Arsenal)
Filling Thierry Henry's boots is the task facing Croatiastriker Eduardo Da Silva. Manager Arsene Wenger turned to the24-year-old Brazilian-born attacker to replace Henry and a winning goalagainst Lazio on his first appearance after receiving a work permit wasnot a bad start. He has an impressive scoring record -- seven in 12 forCroatia and 34 in 32 for Dinamo Zagreb last season - but he may needtime to adjust to the demands of the Premier League. |
