Ferguson ketepi dulu pemain muda hadapi Benfica

– Reuters

Benfica vs Man United Player Ratings
ESPNSTAR.com rates the players that took to the field in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Benfica on Wednesday night.

Benfica

Artur - 7.5
A decent showing from the Benfica custodian. Showed good handling when tested with crosses, and was hapless to stop Ryan Giggs' magnificent equaliser.

Maxi Pereira - 7.5
Showed excellent resilience to match Park Ji-sung all night long, and wasn't afraid to help out in attack either.

Luisao - 9
An absolute rock at the back for the Portuguese side. Did not allow a single ball past him and was unbeatable in the air. Man-of-the-match performance by the former Brazil international.

Ezequiel Garay - 7
Reasonably comfortable performance by the former Real Madrid man, although he was aided by United's preference to play one striker. Had to be accoutable after the introduction of Javier Hernandez, and kept his man quiet.

Emerson - 6.5
Was troubled by Antonio Valencia's pace all night long, and would have been a bigger culprit had his opponent been fully match-fit.

Ruben Amorim (off 56') - 6
Quiet game by Amorim. No surprise to see him hauled off before the hour mark.

Javi Garcia - 7.5
Another ex-Real player in the Benfica ranks, Garcia held his own against his more-illustrious opponents in Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick. Played his role as holding midfielder to perfection.

Axel Witsel - 5
Nondescript performance by the Belgian midfielder. Hardly had a touch of the ball.

Pablo Aimar (off 75') - 8.5
Showed why he was once regarded as Diego Maradona's successor with a wonderful display. Tested the United defence time and time again with inventive passing.

Nicolas Gaitan (off 90') - 8
One of Benfica's liveliest customers on the night. Gave Fabio a headache down the flank all night long, and was not afraid to try his luck from distance. A pity his couple of fizzing left-foot strikes failed to find the target.

Oscar Cardozo - 8.5
Led the line superbly for Benfica all night. Opened the scoring after brilliantly controlling a long ball on his chest, before turning and rifling a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. Gave Jonny Evans a headache throughout the match.

Subs
Nolito (on 56') - 7
The Barcelona reject came on in the second half and looked lively. Could have even bagged a winner for Benfica had he not dragged his shot wide late in the game.
Nemanja Matic (on 75') - N/A
Could not really have expected to have a bigger influence than the man he replaced - Aimar.
Bruno Cesar (on 90') - N/A
Insufficient time to make an impact on the game.

Man United

Anders Lindegaard - 8.5
Earned a point for United with a couple of brilliant one-handed saves. Lindegaard also looked comfortable when handling crosses, and will be hoping to give his manager a selection headache.

Fabio (off 78') - 6.5
Tried his best but is clearly lacking match practice. Deserves credit for regularly bombing forward to support Antonio Valencia, but his final ball was poor.

Chris Smalling - 7
Less impressive than his recent performances, but a competent performance nonetheless.

Jonny Evans - 5
The Northern Ireland international will have to do better if he hopes to rise up the pecking order at United. Already behind Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Smalling and Phil Jones, Evans did himself no favours by letting Oscar Cardozo turn him far too easily for Benfica's opener. Also left his man drift into space far too often.

Patrice Evra - 7
Steadied the ship for United's young defence, as was expected of him as United's stand-in skipper. Showed good skill going forward as well.

Antonio Valencia (off 69') - 6.5
Showed plenty of endeavour early on but was clearly lacking in match fitness and was understandably hauled off midway through the second half. Will also feel he could have done better in the first half when he held on the ball for too long instead of releasing his strikers with an early ball.

Michael Carrick - 5.5
Another European night where the England international went missing. Spent most of the game looking around for his man after letting him slip under his guard. The most frustating part for the United fans must be knowing what Carrick is capable of, yet seeing him flatter to deceive time and time again.

Darren Fletcher (off 69') - 6.5
Like Valencia, Fletcher was lacking in match practice on the night but showed trademark resilience and never stopped trying. A 70-minute runout will do him much good for the weeks to follow.

Park Ji-sung - 7
The ex-Korea Republic captain was his trademark industrious self, but could never really be counted on to provide a cutting edge for United. Still, it is clear to see why Sir Alex Ferguson turns to Park during the crunch European encounters.

Ryan Giggs - 8.5
United's Welsh legend turned back the years with a display that wasn't just about his brilliant equaliser. He ran the show for his team and looked the most likely to carve open the Benfica defence. Of course, his goal was indeed pretty special, letting the ball run in front of him before hitting an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Wayne Rooney - 7
Tried hard but Rooney cut a lonely figure up forward. Looked rather uncomfortable being the furthest forward, and instantly came to live when Javier Hernandez was brought on to play ahead of him.

Subs
Javier Hernandez (on 69') - 6
Wasn't presented with any decent goalscoring opportunities. Could have tested the Benfica defence if he had made more runs, but to be fair, United were probably happy to retain possession in midfield.

Nani (on 69') - 6.5
Brought on to inject some creativity but like Hernandez, Nani was probably instructed to keep hold of the ball rather than actively look to create opportunities.

Phil Jones (on 78') - N/A
A crude tackle near the touchline was the only thing to take note of Jones' European debut. Will be looking forward to more meaningful encounters in the future.
