"Valencia dived to win penalty"
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez felt Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia dived to win an equalising penalty.
Liverpool went on to lose 2-1 at Old Trafford
However, the Reds boss did not think Sir Alex Ferguson's pre-match suggestion that Liverpool benefited from many decisions other sides did not had a bearing on referee Howard Webb's handling of the game.
Striker Fernando Torres gave the visitors the ideal start when he headed in Dirk Kuyt's cross six yards out in the fifth minute.
However, referee Webb's controversially awarded a penalty five minutes later when Valencia went down under Javier Mascherano's challenge despite initial contact being outside the area.
Wayne Rooney converted the rebound after Jose Reina had brilliantly saved his spot-kick but it was not until midway through the second half when Park Ji-sung scored the winner from a diving header.
In the last minute Torres had a chance to equalise from 10 yards but ballooned his strike into the air and Yossi Benayoun headed tamely into goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar's arms.
"We gave away the penalty too early - but there are doubts about the penalty," said Benitez.
"When you see the replay it is suspicious how he went to the ground."
Asked whether he thought Valencia had dived Benitez said: "From the replay I think so.
"It is not clear but the way he fell down.....is strange.
"It made a big difference. We were playing well and had confidence and then one situation changed everything."
Benitez was involved with a heated touchline exchange with Ferguson after Rooney's goal, with his United counterpart suggesting Mascherano should have been sent off.
However, the Spaniard did not believe Webb had been influenced by Ferguson's comments prior to the game.
"Some decisions in the past have not been the best for us but I consider Howard Webb a good referee," he added.
"The referees are professional. We know the influence of Sir Alex in everything but he is a good referee.
"Jamie Carragher was coming inside so he was in the middle of the action (and therefore Mascherano should not have been red-carded)."
Of their touchline exchange Benitez said: "When you have different opinions you have to express them. He has his own opinion about everything."

Premier League Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool
South Korean nods champions past bitter rivals...

By Matt Monaghan
MANCHESTER UNITED
Edwin Van der Sar - 6 - Little to do but pick the ball out of the net when let down by his defence for Torres' goal. Kicking under pressure was accurate and trustworthy.
Gary Neville - 5 - Copybook badly blotted when he allowed Torres the freedom of the box to open scoring. Supplemented Valencia otherwise. Nearly beheaded Maxi with wild clearance. Can't help but feel Benitez missed chance to exploit his lack of speed.
Rio Ferdinand - 5 - Still not back to best. Lacked the spring to cut out Gerrard in the build-up to Torres' header and out-sprinted a number of times. Agger's drives from the back showed what is now lacking from his locker.
Nemanja Vidic - 7 - Ended Torres nightmare with concentrated performance. Didn't dive in and stayed on feet to stop Spaniard running rampant. Booked but not sent off.
Patrice Evra - 7 - Constant threat going forward to pen back Johnson. Buzzed around the pitch.
Antonio Valencia - 8 - Pulled down by Mascherano for penalty after trademark sprint. Insua was no match for United's burgeoning winger. Beat him for pace and skill every time. Importantly, made most of advantage with excellent crosses. Booked for late tackle on Agger.
Darren Fletcher - 7 - Commitment most famous asset, but attacking quality on show with perfect cross for Park. Sat on Gerrard to quell influence. Given stern talking to by Howard Webb after tangle with Kuyt in second half.
Michael Carrick - 5 - The lttle he tried came off. Sloppy pass led to Torres' goal and was by-passed a number of times by Liverpool.
Ji-sung Park - 8 - Stole the show with a header. Fed off Rooney and made own luck with tireless enthusiasm to get forward. Drew several fouls from Liverpool players as they were out-foxed by him. Given early rest by Ferguson when brought off for Scholes.
Nani - 6 - Useful when the ball made it to him, but not involved enough. Chose to cut inside to shoot or cross. Came off for injury returnee Giggs.
Wayne Rooney - 8 - Ended 10-match goalless streak against Liverpool with rebound from penalty. Has grown in to lone-man role up top and used the ball effectively.
Substitutes
Ryan Giggs - 6 - Comeback from injury has strengthened Ferguson's hand for remaining of the season.
Paul Scholes - 6 - Experience helped United hold on as game ticked down to a finish
LIVERPOOL
Jose Reina - 7 - Dived across goal to palm away penalty only for the fortunate Rooney to poke home the rebound. Made several saves and is a true class act.
Glen Johnson - 5 - Visibly working way back to full match fitness. Hung back rather than exploiting space left by Evra and Nani. Also struggled to stop the Portuguese when the ball came his way.
Jamie Carragher - 6 - Straight in to Rooney's face and refused to let United's star man settle. Booked.
Daniel Agger - 7 - Showed Ferdinand how he used to play with striding runs from the back. Won a number of headers.
Emiliano Insua - 4 - Endured a torrid time from Valencia. Significantly slower than his opponent and barely stuck a foot in to stop the supply from the flank.
Javier Mascherano - 6 - Created game's talking point. Began to pull back Valencia outside the box, with the Ecuadorian falling inside for the spot kick. Could have seen red in incident but was correctly booked. Combative as always.
Lucas - 6 - On occasion, chose to supplement Torres from midfield. Steady, but anything but spectacular. Hooked for Benayoun.
Dirk Kuyt - 7 - Return to form, but sacrificed as involvement waned. Chipped cross was perfectly hit for Torres. Drove inside frequently and linked up with Torres. Like his team-mates, more of a presence in first half than second.
Steven Gerrard - 5 - Story of his season so far. Quiet and unable to effect the flow of the match. Found Kuyt to set-up Torres, but even that pass was mis-hit. Must be a worry for watching Fabio Capello as World Cup approaches.
Maxi Rodriguez - 5 - Uninspiring selection from Benitez. Lacked pace to get at the ancient Neville. Got back to help Insua but wasn't an effective screen. Hooked for Babel as Benitez went for parity.
Fernando Torres - 7.5 - Frustrated, petulant, but ruthless. Effortlessly nodded home Dirk Kuyt's centre to open the scoring. Less of a threat to Vidic than usual as was starved of possession, though unsettled defenders with presence alone. Fluffed only opening in second half. Booked for lunge on Park, could have been carded beforehand when he kicked the penalty spot ahead of Rooney's penalty.
Substitutes
Alberto Aquilani - 5 - Sunk in to the shadows after coming on. Couldn't win the ball to try and spark a Liverpool revival.
Yossi Benayoun - 5 - Wasted header after Torres' miscue.
Ryan Babel - 5 - Pace could have provided a new edge, but he was dull and ineffective after being brought on. Speed could have been vital if Benitez had gambled earlier. Wasted opportunity from the Liverpool manager. |

Ji-sung bakal tonggak MU: Fergie

"It was a great goal (from Torres), a great header. But we concededtoo early and in the second half you could see they are a good team, nodoubt about this, but they didn't have too many options and it couldhave been a draw, with a little bit of luck."
