Google Malaysia denies awarding teen over translation app
by t. avineshwaran
PETALING JAYA: Google Malaysia has denied awarding any money or project to a teenager who created an app for an Internet-based messaging service that can provide instantaneous language translation.
Fifteen-year-old Yusrim Karim, who submitted his app - Coker Chat to Google Idea - said he received an e-mail from Google Ideas, claiming that his software was fantastic and offered him a chance to work on a US$36mil (RM1333.14mil) project or US$50,000 (RM184,910) cash.
The Form Three student from Sandakan claimed he chose the cash.
According to Google Malaysia's head of communications and public affairs department, Zeffri Yusoff, the story was “completely incorrect”, adding that there was no such competition organised by Google Ideas.
“I checked with Google Ideas and they did not send any e-mail to the boy.
“I can only speculate for now. The boy might have received a spam email,” Zeffri said, when contacted by The Star Online on Thursday.
Google Malaysia also said in a statement that the article Student wins Google Award was factually wrong.

Sabah teen being investigated for Google claim
by ruben sario
KOTA KINABALU: A 15-year-old boy appears to have pulled off a prank leading his teachers into believing that he won an award from Internet giant Google.
Yusrim Karim had told his teachers at SMK Merpati in Sandakan about his achievement, which Google Malaysia denied following reports of his “feat”.
But his prank is not going down well with educationists as Sabah Education Department director Datuk Jame Alip has ordered an investigation.
“I have asked the Sandakan District Education Office to give a report about this,” he said on Thursday.
Google Malaysia's head of communications and public affairs department Zeffri Yusof said the teen’s claim of the award was false.
“It appears to be an unfortunate misunderstanding,” he added.
On Wednesday, the Form Three told the school that he had received a US$50,000 (RM184,910) award from Google Ideas over his instantaneous translation app.
Yusrim claimed that he had received the award last December and only told his teachers recently.

PETALING JAYA: Google Malaysia good-naturedly says it is happy to play along if a teenager’s claim of winning an award from the Internet giant is indeed a prank.
The Form Three student from SMK Merpati from Sandakan claimed he chose the cash.
Google Malaysia's head of communications and public affairs department Zeffri Yusoff said the company might invite the teenager, reporter and teachers to its office, giving an “April fool” prize of some kind.
“If indeed this was April foolery, Google Malaysia would be happy to play along with it.
“Let’s make this all a bit light-hearted instead,” Zeffri told The Star Online on Thursday. |
