Roma v Man Utd
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL FIRST LEG
Venue: Stadio Olimpico. Date: Tuesday, 1 April. Kick-off: 1945 BST
Roma skipper Francesco Totti has been ruled out of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg after suffering a thigh injury on Saturday.
Totti, Roma's top scorer with 14 goals, is set to be replaced by Mirko Vucinic.
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar looks set to return to the side after missing the 4-0 win over Aston Villa with a groin injury.
Mikael Silvestre has overcome a knee ligament injury, but Nani and Louis Saha are both ruled out by injury.
French defender Silvestre has not played since suffering the injury against Everton in September.
His return boosts Sir Alex Ferguson's squad after Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs complained of knocks after Saturday's emphatic win over Villa.
Totti suffered his injury in Saturday's 1-1 Serie A draw at Cagliari but hopes to return for the second leg at Old Trafford.
In his absence, Roma will look to Vucinic, who has scored four goals in the Champions League this season and was rested for the match against Cagliari.
Central defender Juan has a foot problem so Christian Panucci looks set to cover with MarcoCassetti, Max Tonetto and Cicinho battling for his right-back slot.
The two sides met twice last season at the same stage of the competition, with Roma winning 2-1 in Italy before suffering a humiliating 7-1 thrashing in Manchester.
They have already played twice in this season's group stage, United winning 1-0 at home before the teams drew 1-1 in Rome.
The matches have been marred by violence between supporters and both clubs have been working on ways to avoid further problems.
Italian authorities are providing free transport to the stadium for United fans in a bid to keep them away from any possible trouble.
They have also introduced a voucher system for ticket collection in a bid to stop touts.

Carrick worry for United
Michael Carrick is an injury doubt ahead of Manchester United's UEFA Champions League clash with Roma.
The England international sat out training on Monday evening after picking up a knock in Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa.
Carrick was left out of training as a precaution and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will give him until the last minute to prove his fitness.
Better news on the injury front for United was that key trio Edwin van der Sar, Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra all came through the work out unscathed.
Dutch goalkeeper Van der Sar missed the win over Aston Villa because of a groin injury, while Giggs and Evra both picked up knocks at the weekend.
All three showed no ill-effects in training and should be available for Tuesday's quarter-final first-leg with Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
Meanwhile, Gary Neville completed 90 minutes for United's reserves in their 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Monday as he continues his rehabilitation injury. |

AS Roma, Barcelona missing key players
LONDON - Francesco Totti will be missing when AS Roma faces Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-finals, and FC Barcelona may struggle to beat Schalke without Lionel Messi, Deco and maybe Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho.
With the four English teams in the last eight, Barcelona and Roma will be playing with depleted squads Tuesday in the first leg.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all won their Premier League games over the weekend. Barcelona, however, lost to Real Betis 3-2 and Roma could only get a 1-1 draw with Cagliari, where Totti scored but then tore a muscle in his left thigh.
"The team loses in percentage terms for the extraordinary things he's capable of," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said of Totti on Monday. "But I have a lot of confidence that the team will assume the responsibility of picking up the slack, just as they've done in the past when we've been without our captain."
Totti's absence will boost a Manchester United team which outplayed Aston Villa 4-0 Saturday and holds a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings. Cristiano Ronaldo took his overall tally for the season to 35 goals and set up two for Wayne Rooney and one for Carlos Tevez.
"Roma is going to be a massive game for us and we prepared the right way with the win against Villa," said Rooney, whose team has a plus-53 goal difference in the Premier League. "To be at this club, with the football we play at times, is brilliant. It's something every player would want to be a part of."
There will be heavy security at the game (2:30 p.m. ET) because of violence that flared when the two teams met at the Stadio Olimpico last season.
At full strength and on form, Barcelona would be confident of beating Schalke, even in Germany. But coach Frank Rijkaard is again unable to field the injured Messi and Deco, while Eto'o could be sidelined with a left foot injury and Ronaldinho had missed four straight games with a foot problem.
Barcelona, which conceded three goals in 15 minutes after leading Betis 2-0, dropped to third place and trails Real Madrid by seven points in the Spanish league.
"We feel ashamed in a football sense. We cannot explain it. Again we have allowed ourselves to lose . . . in an incredible way," Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez said. "We have to change our game quickly and think of Schalke."
Fortunately for Barcelona, the German team comes off a laboured 0-0 draw with Karlsruhe in the Bundesliga after a run of three victories. But Schalke coach Mirko Slomka said his team was highly motivated.
"There has been a lot of talk about our game. Surely not everything is that bad. We do lack some creativity, but on the other side we have a lot of pace and desire," Slomka said. "That's what we want to show. Everyone is really eager for this game."
England has the most teams in the quarter-finals, but not all of them can advance to the semifinals.
Arsenal and Liverpool face each other at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday (2:30 p.m. ET), when Chelsea visits Turkish league leader Fenerbahce.
The Gunners, winless in their previous five games, produced a stunning comeback from 2-0 and a man down to win 3-2 at Bolton on Saturday. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger rested top scorer Emmanuel Adebayor for the game, but he will be back to face five-time European champion Liverpool.
"I had one striker who needed games, Robin van Persie, and one who needed to be rested," Wenger said. "Adebayor looked a bit jaded recently and he played a game in midweek. I knew I could not rest him at all in the next three games. He is important to me."
While the Gunners stayed just about in the English title race - six points behind United with six games to go - Liverpool took a firm hold on the lucrative fourth spot, which means another shot at next season's Champions League.
The Reds edged fifth-place Everton 1-0 on a goal from Fernando Torres and are five points ahead of their neighbour.
"We must admit that we are surprised by how well Fernando has settled here," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "We knew he was a great player, one of the best strikers in Europe, but for him to score 28 goals in his first season for the club is very impressive."
Chelsea is the nearest club to United in the league after edging Middlesbrough 1-0, and next goes to Fenerbahce on Wednesday. Fenerbahce stayed in first place in Turkey by beating Besiktas 2-1.
The Blues will fly to Istanbul hoping that sick midfielder Frank Lampard and injured goalkeeper Petr Cech will be able to play.
"Lampard was very sick and he didn't even come to the training ground," Chelsea manager Avram Grant said. "If he can be available, we will take him on the plane and we will see about Petr Cech at the same time."
Former Brazil defender Roberto Carlos, Fenerbahce's most experienced player, is still recovering from the injury he sustained in the first leg against Sevilla and is unlikely to play. |

Darren Fletcher抯 injury was unlucky but friendlies are vital, says George Burley
George Burley, the Scotland manager, admits that he understood Sir Alex Ferguson抯 furious reaction to the 90th-minute injury that Darren Fletcher suffered in last week抯 friendly international against Croatia at Hampden Park.
However, Burley disagrees with the Manchester United manager抯 disdain for such matches. Fletcher, the United midfield player, sustained a knee injury at the end of the 1-1 draw with Croatia, which could keep him out for six weeks.
Ferguson complained that his player should have played for a maximum of 60 minutes, before dismissing friendly internationals as 揳 waste of time |

Scholes: Ronaldo best I've seen at Man Utd
![](http://www.tribalfootball.com/images2/spacer.gif)
Paul Scholes rates Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player he's played with at Manchester United.
Scholes has played alongside the likes of Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Mark Hughes, David Beckham and Bryan Robson, collecting seven Premier League winners medals in the process.
However, it is Ronaldo that gets the midfielder's vote as his top team-mate at Old Trafford. Scholes, who is due to make his 99th Champions League appearance in Italy, said: "I have been quite lucky to have played with a lot of great players. "Cristiano has to be at the top now, purely for what he has done this season. "Scoring the amount of goals from his position has been nothing short of amazing. "It is not just that, though, it is the way he makes chances and the threat he poses to other teams." |
