Hutchings in the hunt for Bramble

Return of the EPL LegendWigan boss Chris Hutchings aims to bolster his defence by making centre-back Titus Bramble his first signing at the JJB Stadium.

Bramble did not feature in Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce's plans for the Magpies so was released last month - and Hutchings is ready to pounce for the 25-year-old.

The Latics chief, who was handed the reins following Paul Jewell's decision to step down after keeping the club in the Premiership, needs to fill the gap left by veteran Arjan De Zeeuw's exit from the club.

Hutchings is confident he can get the best out of Bramble, who was in and out of the Toon squad during his stay in the North-East and has a reputation for making costly blunders.

If Latics have a bid accepted, however, it is likely to be matched by Fulham as Cottagers boss Lawrie Sanchez is in the hunt for a centre-back after being put off Liverpool's Sami Hyypia due to his wage demands.

Middlesbrough On The Trail Of Dortmund's Degen

English Premiership side Middlesbrough are pursuing Borussia Dortmund's Swiss international defender Philipp Degen as a replacement for Abel Xavier and Stuart Parnaby.

Xavier and Parnaby have both left the Riverside Stadium on free transfers and Boro manager Gareth Southgate is now seeking to brings in defensive cover as quickly as possible.

According to reports in Germany, Degen is now a Boro target, with Southgate hopeful of striking a deal wit the player and his Bundesliga club.

Dortmund are thought to be looking to overhaul their own squad for next season and could be willing to listen to offers for the 24-year-old, who has earned 19 caps for Switzerland - the most recent of them in this weekend's 1-1 draw against Argentina.

Porto's Jose Bosingwa and West Brom's Paul McShane have been linked with Boro as possible alternatives if a deal for Degen fails to materialise.

Philipp's twin brother is David Degen, a midfielder currently with Borussia Moenchengladbach and formerly with FC Basel.

Sheffield Utd Hopeful Of Premiership Reprieve

The chairman of Sheffield United plc, Kevin McCabe, says he has been informed by a "high-level Premier League official" that the Blades will be restored to England's top division if they win their arbitration hearing scheduled for a fortnight's time.

McCabe has not given up the battle against the decision not to dock West Ham United points over the Carlos Tevez affair.

And he expects an independent panel to find in Sheffield United's favour.

McCabe told BBC Radio Five Live: "I firmly believe Sheffield United will win and the previous decision will be overturned for reasons of an irrational decision that was made by the first panel.

"What the [Premier League] officials have said to myself and other colleagues is that if the arbitration overturns the previous decision, that Sheffield United should be reinstated to the Premier League."

The Blades' fate was sealed with a final day defeat at home to Wigan that condemned them to relegation after one season in the top flight. West Ham, who had been handed a record

Hughes keen on 'rock star'

The agent of Kristofer Haestad has revealed that Blackburn boss Mark Hughes is looking to sign his client.

The 23-year-old midfielder is currently contracted to Norweigan outfit IK Start.

The midfielder had a forgettable spell on loan at Wigan last season where he featured just twice under former Latics boss Paul Jewell, who decided against taking up an option on a three-year permanent deal.

But that has not put off Rovers manager Hughes from planning a raid for Haestad and the player's agent, Rune Hauge, expects the Lancashire club to make an official bid in the coming weeks.

He told FVN: "I can confirm that there is interest. I have talked to Blackburn recently and Kristofer is on their list. I would not be surprised if Rovers table an offer when the window opens."

However Haestad, who has come under the radar of Premiership Champions Manchester United, Bolton and West Ham, is unsure if he is up for a return to England following his miserable spell at Wigan, which came to an end three months into the six-month deal.

"I am surprised that it has come up this fast," he admitted.

"To move to England again is not something I am thinking about after what happened at Wigan."

If the Norway international makes the move to Ewood Park he would link up with his international team-mate Morten Gamst Pedersen with whom he released a single last July.

The pair joined fellow Norwegian footballers Freddy dos Santos, Raymond Kvisvik and Oyvind Svenning in releasing the single 'This Is For Real' under the name The Players

Berbatov Hopes Petrov Reports Are Correct

Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has spoken of his delight at the prospect of playing alongside compatriot Martin Petrov as speculation continues that Spurs are interested in the winger.

"I bought a newspaper and saw the rumours linking Martin Petrov with Tottenham," said Berbatov said, who scored twice for Bulgaria in their Euro 2008 qualifier victory against Belarus at the weekend.

"I am pleased to see this but these things will be decided on a much higher level than me and him. It is always a good thing to have a compatriot with you but for the moment things remain as they were before.

"Is there are real chances of him joining us at Spurs? Nothing is impossible in football nowadays. We will see."

The Atletico Madrid star has also confirmed interest from North London, but added that they would not be the only club in the hunt to sign him.

Wigan Sign Bramble From Newcastle

Wigan Athletic have grasped the thorny issue of Titus Bramble's future by signing the Newcastle United defender on a three-year contract.Bramble was released by the Magpies following the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager at St James' Park.

That means he can join the Latics on a free transfer, and the new manager at the JJB, Chris Hutchings, has made the ex-Ipswich centre-back his first signing.
"This is an excellent signing and he'll add experience to the back four," Hutchings said of Bramble, who is 25.
"Other clubs were very interested and it speaks volumes for us as a club that he has chosen to come here."
While at Ipswich, his hometown club, Bramble was regarded as a rising star, winning 12 England Under-21 caps between 2000 and 2002.

However, his

Magnusson Hints At Tevez Stay

West Ham owner Eggert Magnusson has suggested that as things stand, Carlos Tevez will be staying on at West Ham.

'El Apache' has been linked with clubs such as Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan since inpiring West Ham's Premiership survival.

He has even been tipped to join Javier Mascherano once again, at Liverpool.

However, Magnusson was uncomplicated in response.

"It's very simple - Carlos Tevez has a contract at this club for the next three years," he told Sky Sports News.

"He is a great player, a great lad. Everybody loves him around the club."

The Argentine scored a penalty in Argentina's 4-3 win over Albania on Tuesday, and after a short vacation, will join the national team's preparations for the Copa America.
