Two Enemies Finally Reconcile in ‘Brain’
[2012-01-13]
Two doctors have finally reconciled in the KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama “Brain,” which is enjoying consistent popularity with only two episodes left until the end. Its 17th episode topped the ranking charts again among shows in the same time slot with 16.2 percent ratings.
On the January 10 episode, Kim Sang-cheol (Chung Jin-young) takes all the blame for Lee Kang-hoon (Shin Ha-kyun) after a patient falls into a coma after an operation that Kang-hoon took over when Sang-cheol suddenly became ill in the operating room. When the patient’s parents sue Kang-hoon for malpractice, Sang-cheol goes to see them and says that he made the mistake during the operation.
But this only makes Kang-hoon feel anger towards Sang-cheol, who he believes is hypocritical. He goes to confronts him and asks why he did that, Sang-cheol regrettably says, “Because you should not live with such a sense of guilt like me. Because I see my young self in you.”
Some two decades ago, Kang-hoon’s father died during an operation that Sang-cheol performed, but Sang-cheol at first denied that he was the doctor who operated on his father. It turns out that Sang-cheol was tormented by guilt so much that he could not pass a day without drinking, and had a car accident while crossing a street while drunk, which left him with dissociative disorders, meaning that he has lost the memory involving Kang-hoon’s father.
Sang-cheol also advises Kang-hoon to only think about patients, not the fame and reputation he can earn by becoming a famous surgeon, when operating on them. This indicates how regretful Sang-cheol is and how deeply he cares about Kang-hoon.
Kang-hoon also understands why Sang-cheol has acted as if he knew nothing about his father and feels sympathy for him. And he insists that he operate on Sang-cheol, who is diagnosed with meningioma.
Viewers also expressed their happiness about the reconciliation of the two, saying that they were very moved while watching the drama.
Meanwhile, Kang-hoon’s rival surgeon, Seo Jun-seok (Cho Dong-hyuk), volunteers to assist Kang-hoon with the operation on Sang-cheol, a move showing that he will do whatever it takes to be a better doctor.

Man Wins Both Love and Fame as ‘Brain’ Ends
[2012-01-20]
The KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama “Brain” has drawn its curtains with a happy ending where the protagonist has won both love and fame. The medical drama revolved around the life of neurosurgeons at a general hospital.
On the January 17 episode, Lee Kang-hoon (Shin Ha-kyun) feels regretful and guilty after he finds out that Kim Sang-cheol (Chung Jin-young), the chief surgeon on whom he operated due to brain cancer, has lost his vision despite the surgery. He pours out what has been on his mind to Yoon Ji-hye (Choi Jung-won), a fellow doctor he is in love with. Crying, he tells her that he has held grudges against Sang-cheol because his father died during an operation due to his malpractice but that deep down he cannot forgive himself because he may have wanted his incapable, violent father to die and tried to turn the blame on Sang-cheol.
Sang-cheol reads Kang-hoon’s mind and just disappears without telling anyone where he would go, leaving an essential clue to the study Kang-hoon is conducting. The clue helps Kang-hoon complete his study and win the country’s most prestigious medical award a year later.
Meanwhile, Ji-hye attempts to leave Kang-hoon to a hospital at her hometown despite Kang-hoon’s opposition. She puts the scanned image of her brain showing that she is in love on his desk before leaving, but it ends up returning to her. Realizing she and Kang-hoon are meant to be together, Ji-hye changes her mind and runs to him.
Kang-hoon attends a ceremony to celebrate his winning of the medical award but feels deep regret for letting Ji-hye go. But when he stands on the podium to give a speech, he finds Ji-hye running into the hall and broadly smiles. He then tells the audience with a confident, happy voice, “Thank you all for coming here. I am surgeon Lee Kang-hoon.”
“Brain” will be succeeded by “Dream High 2,” starring popular idol band members including Ji-yeon of T-ara, Hyo-rin of Sistar and Jung Jin-woon of 2AM.

Shin Ha-kyun Shows Heart-Captivating Performance in ‘Brain’
[2011-12-05]
Shin Ha-kyun is captivating the hearts of fans with his role in the latest KBS2 drama “Brain.” He plays Lee Kang-hoon, a neurosurgeon who is possessed with the ambition to succeed in his profession.
Coming from a poor, unhappy family, Kang-hoon has had only one thing on his mind -- to become a successful doctor -- for his entire life. He feels resentment towards the world that has been unkind to him and has no interest in anything else other than making his name as a doctor. With no money and connections to support him, he believes in his ability and shows hostility towards anyone who doubts it. He acts like a villain who does not feel any sympathy and compassion for people.
To his misery, Kang-hoon fails to be chosen as a faculty member over Seo Jun-seok (Cho Dong-hyuk), who is from an influential family background. He is also betrayed by his boss Koh Jae-hak (Lee Sung-min), who he had believed was supportive of him but in fact helped Jun-seok join the faculty. Worse, he is threatened by a loan shark to repay his mother’s debts for her, whom he holds a grudge against because she left him as a boy, only to return home after his father died.
Fans identify with Shin’s character and sympathize him as he tries to survive amidst fierce competition while hiding his true feelings. They say his situation reflects the reality where one’s talent or ability is not enough to be successful.
And it is Shin’s portrayal that makes the character all the more attractive. Shin is being praised for his subtle, realistic performance.
Meanwhile, other characters around Kang-hoon are also drawing growing attention. Yoon Ji-hye (Choi Jung-won), a resident, is expected to be the love of Kang-hoon as he kissed her in a surprise move in a recent episode, while Kim Sang-cheol (Chung Jin-young) will become a mentor to him. Jang Yoo-jin (Kim Soo-hyun), a business woman from a rich family who has fallen for him, is also willing to support him.
“Brain” airs on every Monday and Tuesday at 9:55 p.m. on KBS2.

Actors Show Eye-Catching Performance in ‘Brain’ [2011-11-21]
Four protagonists are competing to show appealing charms by showing impressive eye expressions in the KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama “Brain.”
Shin Ha-kyun, Chung Jin-young, Cho Dong-hyuk and Choi Jung-won play surgeons at a general hospital. This often leads them to cover their face with an operating mask and cap, leaving their eyes the only means of expressing their emotions.
Shin, who plays Lee Kang-hoon, a genius surgeon with greedy ambitions, vividly expresses -- through simply his eyes -- the character’s confidence ahead of an important surgery, fury at Yoon Ji-hye (Choi Jung-won), who defies him, and regret for Kim Sang-cheol (Chung Jin-young), his boss who disapproves of him.
Chung shows a stable performance as a veteran in manipulating eye expressions. Sang-cheol shows calm and composure when facing Kang-hoon eye to eye.
Cho and Choi also speak more through their eyes as they, as junior surgeons, feel tension and anxiety in the faceoff between the two senior doctors.
Viewers praised the performance of the four protagonists as what draws them to the show. They wrote on the drama board, “Each character makes me identify with them although they speak only through their eyes,” “It just proves how competent the actors are in their job,” and, “They don’t fail me.”
Producers expressed their gratitude for the interest in and support for the drama. “We are very grateful for all the support viewers have shown and will do our best to live up to their expectations,” they said.

‘Brain’ Begins Amid High Expectations for Two Screen Stars[2011-11-16]
The new KBS2 medical drama “Brain” has raised its curtain on November 14 amid high expectations for two silver screen stars returning to TV. Shin Ha-kyun plays a genius surgeon, Lee Kang-hoon, with greedy ambitions, while Chung Jin-young plays his eccentric boss, Kim Sang-cheol.
The two actors have already shown impressive performances from their first appearance, living up to their name.
Shin, who is making a comeback to TV after an eight-year absence, successfully depicted the character’s complex inner state by revealing all his feelings -- from secretive desire to personal pain and anxiety -- through his facial expressions.
(hrp slps ini dpt tgk dr lee lagi kat kbs... sbs dgn mbc sukar sikit nak lyn...
Chung, who last appeared in a KBS2 drama in 2008, plays an odd but warm surgeon who clashes with Shin in every way. But he will eventually become a mentor for Shin as he sees his own younger self in Shin.
The drama board was inundated with praise for them, saying, “The entire cast, let alone Shin and Chung, suited their roles perfectly,” “Shin Ha-kyun just doesn’t fail us,” “I’m so happy to be able to see Shin Ha-kyun and Chung Jin-young on TV,” and “Chung Jin-young is creating a totally different character from those he has played so far.”
After the first two episodes aired, expectations for the show are rising even further. “Brain” airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on KBS2 at 9:55 p.m.

Eccentric genius and professor Kim Sang Chul, who is presenting an idealistic appearance of a doctor, and lovely doctor Yoon Ji Hye, who is growing up while going through troubles, take a photo together.
Actor Jeong Jin Young always creates a friendly atmosphere with his lively facial expressions and smiles. His mischievous poses and eyes looked the same as that of professor Kim Sang Chul.
Actor Shin Ha Kyun has been gaining great popularity by creating a “Kang Hoon Fever.” He overwhelms viewers with his impressive and strong eyes on the screen, but he looks cute and innocent on the film set.
The cold man Kang Hoon presents a warm smile on the film set of “Brain.”
The rivals, Joon Seok and Kang Hoon, and Bong Koo said, “Actually we are best friends.”
Ko Jae Hak is skilled at living in the world as a fence-sitter in the drama, but actually he is a pure person.
The strict and professional chief nurse presents her completely different appearance on the still.
Thanks to a explosive response from the viewers, the cast members and the staff members of “Brain” are reportedly filming the drama with great enthusiasm after forgetting all of their fatigue. Actors all agree that they are filming the drama with excitement because they know very well that viewers are waiting for following episodes with great anticipation. The excellent medical drama “Brain” airs every Monday and Tuesday night on KBS 2TV.
