Wayne Rooney's development highlights Cristiano Ronaldo's mistake in leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid

The symmetry was almost perfect. Not long after Wayne Rooney departed the Old Trafford stage following another sublime two-goal performance, Miralem Pjanic fired in the goal that sent Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo crashing out of the Champions League. The Portuguese’s face was a picture of despair, Rooney’s glowing with delight. What odds on Ronaldo sending a few more of those ‘miss you so much’ texts to Sir Alex Ferguson over the coming days?
When the former World Player of the Year swapped the red of Manchester United for the white of Madrid this summer, seduced by a move to his professed first love, he must have thought he had achieved footballing fulfillment. As Real plucked star after star from football’s grapevine in a sickeningly ostentatious display of wealth, the future appeared mapped out: Madrid’s pre-eminence was surely secure. Wealth would defeat stealth.
But fast forward nine months and you cannot help but think Ronaldo’s accession to to the Bernabeu throne may have occurred too early. He has been an undoubted success in the Spanish capital, save for some petulant red cards, but his chances of lighting up Europe are over for another year, while his former club swagger into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, one eye on reaching another final. Ronaldo may be there of course, seeing as the Bernabeu is hosting the showpiece event, but he would only be watching the possible coronation of Rooney as the new darling of European football from the stands.
The England striker has been the main beneficiary of Ronaldo’s Old Trafford exit, and has blossomed into the most feared striker in world football. Didier Drogba may have captured the headlines earlier in the season, but it is Rooney who has developed into the Premier League’s most unstoppable force. Make no mistake: if United do win the Champions League, or the Premier League this season to add to their Carling Cup success, it will have Rooney’s name etched all over it.
Darren Fletcher may have run and tackled himself into the ground, Antonio Valencia may have matured into a increasingly dangerous threat on the right wing and Edwin van der Sar may have made some vitally-important saves, but Rooney has pushed and pulled, coaxed and carried United towards a potential treble. He is the team’s figurehead, their saviour. And by the end of 2010 he may very well assume Ronaldo’s former mantle, too: that of the World Footballer of the Year. |

Reds sign Telekom Malaysia
ManchesterUnited has signed Malaysia’s leading telecommunications provider,Telekom Malaysia, on a five-year deal to become its Official IntegratedTelecommunications Partner in the country.
Thepartnership will bring online content to MU supporters and TMcustomers, as well as giving fans the chance to win trips to OldTrafford to watch the team play.
David Gill said: "Our commercialstrategy continues to deliver exciting new opportunities. We know thatthis partnership will help the Club to speak to the millions of fans wehave in Malaysia and we are delighted that Telekom Malaysia hasdeveloped from the sponsor of our tour match into a fully-fledgedpartner. We look forward to working with them.
"Anyone who went on our tour of the Far East last summer knows the strength of feeling that Malaysians have for the Club.
"Over40,000 attended our training session and another 40,000 came to thesecond match in Kuala Lumpur, despite only having 48 hours’ notice ofthe fixture."
