MOSCOW, May 21 (Reuters) - Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholesbroke his nose in Wednesday's Champions League final against Chelseabut played through the pain barrier to win the medal he missed out onnine years ago.
Scholes was injured in a first-half collision with Chelsea's ClaudeMakelele that saw both players yellow carded by Slovak referee LubosMichel with Scholes bloodied, bruised and needing treatment from thephysios before he rejoined the action.
"When he came off at halftime he was very groggy and needed sometablets before going back on for the second half," said manager AlexFerguson.
"Tonight he got what he should have got in 1999 -- a winner's medal."
Back then Scholes had to celebrate United's victory from the sidelinesafter being suspended for the final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona.
This time Ferguson said Scholes's name would be the first on the teamsheet for the final after his scorching shot at Old Trafford gaveUnited a 1-0 win over Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final andsecured their place in Moscow.
United's victory completes a belated full set of major honours forScholes, the quiet man from Oldham who joined United as a 13-year-oldaround the same time as Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Gary and PhilNeville and Nicky Butt.
"Paul Scholes has been a fantastic player for Manchester United for all these years and I am delighted for him," Ferguson added.

MU Juara Liga Champions Lagi!( macam tahun lepas MU Juara pulak..heheh)
Manchester United keluar sebagai juara Liga Champions Eropa 2007/2008 setelah di pertandingan final menaklukkan Chelsea, 7-6, melalui adu penalti. Bagi MU ini adalah gelar juara buat kali ketiga di ajang bergengsi antar klub Eropa tersebut.
Gelar juara Liga Champions Eropa 2007/2008 akhirnya menjadi milik Manchester United (MU). Skuad 'Setan Merah' memastikan diri jadi kampiun buat kali ketiga setelah di pertandingan final di Stadion Luzhniki, Moskow, Rusia, Kamis (22/5) dini hari WIB, menundukkan Chelsea, 7-6 (1-1) lewat adu penalti.
Adu penalti terpaksa mesti digelar setelah kedua tim membagi skor imbang 1-1 dari pertarungan 120 menit (90 menit waktu normal ditambah perpanjangan waktu 2x15 menit). Gol buat MU dicetak oleh Cristiano Ronaldo lewat sundulan kepala di menit 21. Tapi Chelsea sempat membalas lewat sontekan Frank Lampard di menit 45.
Dalam adu penalti, MU unggul 6-5 secara dramatis. Sempat kritis setelah eksekutor ketiga, Ronaldo, gagal menaklukkan kiper Chelsea, Petr Cech, MU balik unggul sesudah eksekusi ketujuh The Blues yang dilakukan Nicolas Anelka berhasil diblok kiper MU, Edwin van der Sar. Sebelumnya, algojo kelima Chelsea, John Terry, juga gagal menaklukkan van der Sar karena eksekusinya melebar akibat kaki kirinya terpeleset rumput yang basah tersiram air hujan.
Chelsea pantas menyesali nasib buruk mereka. Sebab, dalam laga final Liga Champions yang baru pertama kali mereka jalani ini mereka tampil cemerlang. Sayang, banyak peluang meleset, termasuk membentur mistar gawang. Selain itu, di menit 117 striker andalan skuad The Blues, Didier Drogba, diganjar kartu merah akibat menampar Patrice Evra dalam suatu keributan di lapangan.
Bagi MU, sukses ini menjadikan mereka musim ini meraih dua gelar sekaligus, yakni juara Liga Primer Inggris dan Liga Champions. Sedangkan Chelsea harus puas meraih satu gelar saja, yakni Piala Liga Inggris.
Prestasi menang di final atas Chelsea menjadikan MU selalu sukses menang saat tampil di final Liga Champions seperti tahun 1968 dan 1999. Ketika jadi juara tahun 1999 itu, MU menaklukkan Bayern Munich (Jerman), 2-1, dalam laga final yang juga sangat dramatis. |
