Ratings at West Brom

TomCleverley simply makes this midfield lark look easy. Always has timeand makes space, keeping his passes neat, tidy and accurate. One agileinterception was a highlight and his economical use of the ball was acontributory factor to this excellent result. His first league startfor United was superb.

How did each player fare in the season opener at The Hawthorns? Here's our assessment...

David de Gea
Will feel he should have kept out Shane Long's equaliser but showed great composure to recover and survive a physical onslaught from the Baggies. Made a great stop to deny Paul Scharner and clawed away an awkward Somen Tchoyi cross that deflected goalwards. Stood up to everything asked of him in the second half.

Chris Smalling
Slotted in smoothly and looks like he's been playing right-back for years. Gets forward to help the attack and, although he was guilty of a couple of stray passes after the break, this was a formidable display - particularly considering the youthful look to the defence at the end.

Nemanja Vidic
Captain courageous was unable to shrug off an injury but manfully battled on before making way for Jonny Evans seven minutes after the interval. Unflappable under fire, he led by example and dealt with the threat posed by Long and Tchoyi.

Rio Ferdinand
Took over the armband from Vidic but suffered a similar fate when he hobbled off soon afterwards. Handled the physical presence of Tchoyi and read the game superbly. Was under pressure but answered all the questions posed by the home side.

Fabio
Tested but stuck to his guns and emerged as arguably the Reds' top defender on the day. Deflected a Reid shot wide and snapped into tackles but survived one nervous headed clearance that was volleyed off target by Chris Brunt.

Nani
After a matchwinning display at Wembley, he was unable to repeat the Community Shield heroics but remains a major threat. Shot over the bar on a couple of occasions in the first half and sent a header wide from a Fabio cross as the Reds hunted for a winner.

Tom Cleverley
Simply makes this midfield lark look easy. Always has time and makes space, keeping his passes neat, tidy and accurate. One agile interception was a highlight and his economical use of the ball was a contributory factor to this excellent result. A superb first league start with United.

Anderson
A driving display with a really positive range of passing, particularly out to the flanks. Influential, particularly in the opening hour, one skilful dribble summed up his growing confidence. Even filled in as an emergency centre-back at one stage, to again show increasing responsibility and maturity.

Ashley Young
A star all afternoon, who ran the defence ragged at times. Capable of supplying crosses that can't be defended against, his flicks and first-time touches were also excellent. Picked up an assist for the Wayne Rooney goal and is even claiming the second, which came after a positive burst past Brunt and cross which went in off Steven Reid.

Wayne Rooney
Roy Hodgson admitted his side struggled to cope with the England striker who repeated last season's feat of opening the scoring at The Hawthorns. It was an assured finish, after a beautiful touch to Young in the build-up, to get him off the mark quickly for the campaign. Always a main man for the Reds, he had another couple of attempts but, to his credit, also defended admirably.

Danny Welbeck
Made an impudent start with an early backheel and his tracking back meant United were defending from the front. The leggy youngster has added strength to his game this term and this was a decent shift to reward the manager's confidence in him.

Substitutes

Jonny Evans (for Vidic, 52)
Strong and purposeful, he filled in effortlessly for the captain and won a couple of important headers - including one when Ferdinand had just departed prior to a dangerous free-kick.

Dimitar Berbatov (for Welbeck, 65)
Added grace and guile to the frontline and it was his lay-off that ultimately led to the winner. An astute front-runner, he gave United a fresh dimension.

Phil Jones (for Ferdinand, 75)
Nerveless and unflappable, he made one important tackle on Long as he bore down on goal. Completed a very young back-five for the closing quarter of an hour.

14/08/2011 08:30, Report by Mark Froggatt

“An away win is important. Last season we were poor away from homeso to get three points in the first game gives us a good platform forthe rest of the season.”- FifaKing, Talking Reds

Fans salute opening win

Fans on our Talking Reds message board are buzzing after watching United beat West Brom in the opening match of the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season.

The champions overcame injuries to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to bag all three points against the Baggies, who provided a stern test during a match filled with talking points. Here's a selection of fans' comments - why not post your opinion?

Tuor: "I thought we were excellent today. During the first 30 minutes or so our football was a joy to behold. The second-half performance was more workmanlike but our control of the ball, and our general passing, seemed a level above last season."

FifaKing: "An away win is important. Last season we were poor away from home so to get three points in the first game gives us a good platform for the rest of the season."

MB28mbrook: "The Hawthorns has proven to be a difficult place to go and get a win, so this was a great result. And we have to remember they were the only team to earn a point at Old Trafford last season."

Christian90: "The centre-back pairing of Jones and Smalling is just as technically impressive as Ferdinand and Vidic, so I’m not too worried about the defensive injuries. Our midfield also looked very good today, especially Anderson and Tom Cleverley. Watch out Barcelona, we’re coming to get you!"

Generald: "We have a lot of work to do, but I am happy with the win. Jones and Evans both played well, as did Rooney and Young. I am worried about two of our defenders getting injured though. When we get injuries we seem to get them in bunches."

GallagherUnited: "It is good for new lads to experience how to win late in the match and why we never give up. Three points from the opening game is important. We dropped too many points last season, especially away from home, and made life tougher than it should have been."

Ranchero: "I hope David de Gea bounces back from this. I am sure once he gets a good game under this belt and gains some confidence, he will prove to be a good keeper for United."

89CrueFan2: "I cannot criticise Anderson or Tom Cleverley at all because they were both immense. They passed the ball well and showed great vision. Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney saw most of the ball though and were even more impressive."

Vikrant Karnal: "We played really well today and I thought the defence played really well, but there is still a lack of intent from the midfield. However, we have made a good start and I'm sure we'll play better in coming weeks."

Fletcher returns for United reserves

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher made his return from illness in a reserve-team clash against Arsenal on Monday night.

The Scotland captain, with just two first-team appearances to his name since March owing to a mystery virus, played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal won 2-1 at Underhill.

Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia (ankle) was expected to play some part, but he was not involved as goals from Sanchez Watt and Chuks Aneke won it for the Gunners. Mame Biram Diouf netted for United.

Wesley Sneijder tells Man Utd: I’ll take pay cut

WESLEY SNEIJDER has slashed his pay demand to make sure the Manchester United deal goes through.

The worried Dutch star, 27, looked to have blown his chance of leaving Inter Milan by asking for £200,000 a week.

Sneijder is now prepared to slash that demand by £60,000 a week.

It would still making him the second highest paid star at United - behind Wayne Rooney on £250,000 a week.

United offered Sneijder a contract last month and Inter were happy to sell at £35million.

But the Premier League champs could not agree on Sneijder's pay.

The attacking midfielder was sure they would come back with a new offer but that has not happened.
