Manchester United v AC Milan Preview

Sir Alex Ferguson expects David Beckham to be consigned to the AC Milan bench for his emotional Old Trafford return.

Beckham flew into Manchester this lunchtime to the usual overwhelming greeting, covered live on TV no less, with fans eager to get autographs and photographs of England's footballing icon.

What Beckham really craves, though, is the chance to play at Old Trafford tomorrow, and face his former club for the first time since leaving for Real Madrid in 2003.

Yet if it happens, Ferguson does not believe it will be from the kick-off.

In trying to ignore what he feels is the circus that surrounds Beckham, his analysis of the Milan side aiming to become the first to beat United in a two-legged tie having lost the opening game on home soil does not include the former England skipper.

"I am finding it difficult to pick their team but I don't know whether Beckham will start," said Ferguson, whose side hold a 3-2 advantage.

"I have not got that down in my conclusions about their team.

"He has not started a game since the first leg, so it is difficult to say what impact he will have on the game.

"But he will be there and the one thing you have to be aware of is his delivery of the ball, which is fantastic.

"That is the threat. There are a lot of threats in their team of course, but we are well aware of David's."

Wayne Rooney has made a rapid recovery from the knee injury he aggravated on international duty last week and kept him out of Saturday's win at Wolves.{:1_137:}

"It was a worry with Rooney," said Ferguson of his 28-goal frontman.

"Looking at him last Friday I didn't think he had any chance.

"But he has progressed and he plays and we are pleased at that because given his form at the moment I am sure that whatever match he went into he would be an absolute threat to anyone."

Milan coach Leonardo has been impressed by the development in Rooney since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Madrid.

"Rooney is a fixed point of reference in the United team," said the Brazilian.

"It is incredible to see the way he has developed, grown and matured as a player.

"Maybe it has had something to do with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving because it meant he needed to step up."

Antonio Valencia and Nani could occupy the wider roles for United and, with Michael Carrick suspended and Ryan Giggs only just back in training after breaking his arm at Aston Villa last month, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Park Ji-sung are the men Ferguson might use in a three-man central midfield.

Wes Brown has been out of action for between four and six weeks with a broken bone in his foot

Rooney inspires United romp

There was no fairytale Old Trafford return for David Beckham as WayneRooney led a Manchester United cruise into the Champions Leaguequarter-finals after a 4-0 win over AC Milan.

Rooney scored a goal ineach half to take his tally for the season to 30 and snuff out anychance Milan had of crowning Beckham's appearance against his formerclub in glory.

Instead, the joy was all the hosts' as ParkJi-Sung ran onto Paul Scholes' pass to widen the gap before DarrenFletcher headed a fourth near the end.

Always one to embrace asense of occasion, Beckham was among the last Milan players to leavethe dressing room, making his entrance to a standing ovation fromsupporters who never fell out of love with him the way Ferguson did.

Predictably, though, Beckham had been left on the bench - just as he was on his lastEuropean appearance for United, against Real Madrid seven years ago, when he eventually scored twice to prove a point without being able tosave the Red Devils from elimination.

That night, Ronaldo - theBrazilian one - scored a hat-trick for Real. Now United have their ownhero, and Ferguson has a world-class striker.

It seems to have been a quiet period for Rooney. That was just because he did not play at Wolves on Saturday.
AsFerguson has been known to engage in the odd bout of kidology, theextent of the knee injury that kept England's star striker out of theMolineux encounter will never be known. He was never likely to miss outhere, though.

His two goals in the San Siro three weeks agoturned a tie on its head that appeared to be floating out of United'sreach. His latest effort merely rammed another nail in Milan's coffin.

Gary Neville was the provider for the first, curling over a right-wing cross his old friend Beckham would have been proud of.
Rooney soared between defenders and neatly glided the ball into the far corner.

Itwas his seventh header on the trot in a growing tally of goals thatthreatens the 42 which helped get Cristiano Ronaldo crowned as theworld's best player two years ago.

The same accolades could easily be being bestowed on Rooney next winter.
Muchwill depend on the respective success enjoyed by United and England ofcourse. But their talisman could not be doing any more and his secondarrived 54 seconds after the restart.

An outstanding pass, delivered from the left-wing with the outside of his right-foot by Nani, provided the opportunity.
Christian Abbiati gave the game away by dashing out. Rooney merely prodded it past him.

Havingalready become only the second player - after Walter Pandiani - toscore home and away against Milan in a European tie, Rooney waspresumably creating some kind of history by doing it twice.

It was the end of Rooney's contribution, although not United's scoring.

Afterhinting at retirement a few weeks ago, Paul Scholes appears to beenjoying something of a renaissance and it was his brilliantlydisguised pass that was clinically finished by Park as the gap betweenthese two European heavyweights widened to a gulf.

As there was little else to do, Leonardo introduced Beckham.

WithBeckham opting to put a green-and-gold scarf round his neck as he madehis way down the tunnel, the abuse is not going to be silenced any timesoon.

Man United-Milan Player Ratings

Manchester United

Edwin Van der Sar: 7

Made a smart save in the first-half from a Pirlo pile-driver and was hardly troubled for the most part of the game.

Gary Neville (off 66th min): 7

Rolled back the years after the Manchester United captain overlapped on the right and crossed to Rooney for United first goal. Defensively, he held his own against Ronaldinho on the right.

Rio Ferdinand: 6

Playing his second consecutive match for United, Ferdinand looked comfortable if not untroubled by Milan's blunt attacks.

Nemanja Vidic: 7

His physical presence and aerial dominance meant Milan's cross into the box were dealt with ease.

Patrice Evra: 6

Evra had one of his quieter games but it was more because of Milan's lack of wing-play.

Darren Fletcher: 7

Doing the donkey work in midfield but his contribution was just as immense as he chased down every ball and pressed Milan's midfielders into mistakes. Scored his first Champions League goal.

Paul Scholes (off 73rd min):7

Another key performer on the night for United - Scholes kept the midfield ticking with his distribution. Escaped a yellow card though for his wild lunge on former Arsenal man Flamini.

Park Ji-Sung: 7.5

Instructed by Ferguson to become Pirlo's shadow and Park did a sterling job to keep the playmaker quiet.

Antonio Valencia: 7.5

His stock continues to raise with every game. Valencia did not look out of place against the Milan players and attacked just as well as he defended. Becoming a firm fan favourite.

Nani: 7

Milan struggled all night to cope with his pace as Nani proved that when he is in the mood, no one can touch him. It was his electric pace that helped set up Rooney's second goal.

Wayne Rooney (off 66th min): 8

He is currently the most in-form player in Europe right now. Rooney is completely unplayable and he could have had five or six goals on the night.

Subs:

Dimitar Berbatov (on 66th min): 6

Was a handful when he came on and forced Milan's defenders to think twice from joining in the attack.

Rafael (on 66th min): 6

Wonderful first-time cross to find Fletcher for United's fourth goal.

Darron Gibson (on 73rd min): 6

Came on for Scholes and continued to help United maintain a vice-like grip in midfield.

AC Milan

Christian Abbiati: 5

Was let down by a porous defence in front of him.

Ignazio Abate (off 63rd min): 4

Struggled to keep pace with United's attacks down the flanks and was easily outstripped by Nani on numerous chances.

Daniele Bonera: 4 (off 46th min)

Gave Rooney too much space for United's first goal and looked a little lost at OT. Taken off at half-time.

Thiago Silva: 5

Gave away the ball far too often for a center-back and lacked bite in his tackles.

Marek Jankulovski: 4

The wingback was totally ineffectual on the left and did not go on his usual overlapping runs.

Mathieu Flamini: 4

The former Arsenal player did not have the best of games and tried to take out his frustrations on a couple of United players.

Andrea Pirlo: 5

Well-marked by Park Ji-Sung and his influence was severely limited by a well set-up United midfield.

Massimo Ambrosini: 4

Anonymous when in midfield and disastrous in defence. A very poor performance by the Milan captain.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar: 4

Lacked match sharpness and had a great chance in the first-half but his control let him down.

Marco Borriello (off 68th min): 5

Starved of service up-front and looked very frustrated.

Ronaldinho: 6

Was lively in the opening exchanges and nearly opened the scoring for Milan. Rapidly lost his influence as United gained more

Subs:

Clarence Seedorf (on 46th min): 5

Was sent on to try to control the midfield for Milan but was overwhelmed by United's players eventually.

David Beckham (on 63rd min): 6

Not bad a performance and was one of the few Milan players to keep running till the end. Had a shot well-saved

Filippo Inzaghi (on 68th min): 5

Had a great chance to scored at the end but he mis-kicked at the crucial moment.
