Fergie hits panic button
By DION FANNING
Sunday April 27 2008
I f this is Alex Ferguson's plan, itis almost impenetrably cunning. Ferguson's devotion to the romantic aspect of football was, in part, shaped by his belief that hisstrutting, swashbuckling but occasionally self-destructive teams madelife difficult for themselves. Yesterday Ferguson made it difficult forhis team.
United are still favourites for the Premier Leaguedespite the defeat at Chelsea. But they will need to win their remaining two games to be guaranteed the title. They have not won two successive games in the league since March.
By picking a midfield of Darren Fletcher, Anderson and Michael Carrick, Ferguson, as SeanConnery said in The Untouchables, brought "a knife to a gunfight".
Chelseaare anarchic and inconsistent (even yesterday there was a ludicrous and sustained argument between Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba over whoshould take a free-kick), but with a midfield of Ballack, Jon Obi Mikel and the outstanding Michael Essien, they exposed United. But Ferguson had done his bit too.
He left Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, clearlyfeeling that the two games Manchester United now have to win, they will win, but a side that has recently struggled to get a point at Middlesbrough, may be anxious if they go searching for three at Wiganon the final day of the season.
Twice in less than a week,Ferguson has now refused to play the opposition his side are facing andinstead engaged in some spurious mid-term planning.
OnWednesday, he spurned the opportunity of an away goal, instead sendingout a team that defended on the edge of its own box and yesterday he seemed to be thinking again of that second leg with another curious team selection.
It is not the first time this season that Ferguson'srotation policy has let him down. Worryingly, Nemanja Vidic left thefield early with concussion and Rooney hobbled off after he'd equalised with the hip problem he picked up at Ewood Park last Saturday. Vidic'sabsence could be said to have caused United's uncertain start but theywere sloppy from the beginning and gave the ball away as easily as theydid at the Nou Camp.
In the second half, they improved but bythat stage Chelsea had a lead and in the final minutes they had apenalty correctly given after Michael Carrick handled an Essien cross.United searched for a grievance and found one in Alan Wiley's refusal to award an earlier penalty when Ballack pulled Ronaldo as the pair tussled for a corner.
But the truth indicted Ferguson, not the referee.United waited for 45 minutes to begin to play and even then it was fitful.
Of course, the credit for Chelsea's victory must go toJose Mourinho. That is probably how the former Chelsea manager saw itanyway. He had appeared yesterday morning in various media outlets envisaging how things would work out at the Bridge. He sounded likeObi-Wan Kenobi reminding his young knights of the way of the Jedi.
They knew how to beat Manchester United, he told them, the not-so-implicit message being that he had taught them well.
Grantis too assured a politician to allow someone to muscle in on his gooddays. Only Liverpool of the top four have left Stamford Bridge with anything since Grant took over and he will hope to change that onWednesday night.
But the goal Chelsea conceded to bring Unitedback into the game wouldn't have been tolerated by Mourinho. Paolo Ferreira took a quick free-kick for some reason and the normally peerless Ricardo Carvalho was briefly gormless.
He played theball backwards, without looking, into Rooney's path. Rooney ignored hispain, cut across John Terry and finished beautifully. He then hobbled off and his fitness, along with Vidic's, will be of huge concern before Tuesday.
But the manager's methods will cause equal worry.Yesterday Ferguson stood on the brink of a tenth title, an astoundingachievement that should stand up to any scrutiny, but right now hecould be mistaken for a rookie, desperately anxious and seemingly unsure of how his side will get to the finish.
United have onewin -- albeit against Arsenal -- in their last four matches and asFerguson and Carlos Queiroz again railed against referees, they werecausing a mighty diversion.
Ferguson described the decision as"diabolical" and complained, once more, of the decisions in recentweeks which have gone against United. While he has a point about the penalty appeals ignored at Blackburn last weekend, his selection yesterday was the decisive factor.
At the end, it was close to abrawl. Ferguson left the field having pulled his players away from thereferee, but not before delivering a few comments of his own to Wiley, who had awarded the first penalty against United in the Premier Leaguethis season.
At that point, Ferguson seemed to have forgotten all abouthis support for the 'Respect the Referee' campaign (not as quickly asthe campaign itself seems to have been forgotten) and reverted to hisold self. His players then tussled with groundstaff in the warm-downbefore Queiroz delivered his master's message.
"It must benecessary for a player to bring a gun and shoot one of our men in thebox for us to get a penalty," he said. It was too late, but United were finally contemplating the gunfight.
