United misfit Obertan joins Newcastle

Newcastle have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan on a five-year contract.

Obertan, whose first team chances with United were limited during his two years with them, is relishing the prospect of regular football with Newcastle.

"I have come here with a lot of ambition," he told Sky Sports News. "I just want to play football."

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was delighted to have landed a long-term transfer target.

He said: "It's good news for us. He is a player we have been after for some time.

"With Wayne Routledge moving on there was an opportunity to bring him in.

"With his pace, power and versatility he is going to be an important player for us."

The 22-year-old French player moved to Old Trafford from Bordeaux in the summer of 2009.

It has been a troubled pre-season for Newcastle with fans unhappy at the lack of activity in the transfer market in the wake of the £35million sale of striker Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

Newcastle responded to criticism of the board by midfielder Joey Barton on his Twitter account by telling him he was free to find a new club despite having a year left on his contract.

Now Pardew has been able to invest some of the Carroll money and is hopeful of adding another striker to his squad before the transfer window closes.

"We certainly need to bring in a striker," he said. "We are aware of that and we are working hard on that."

Papers: De Gea learns lessons
09/08/2011 09:44

Richard Tanner in The Daily Express writes..
David De Gea admits he needs to improve - and quickly - after his Community Shield nightmare for Manchester United. David De Gea was in no-man’s land for Joleon Lescott’s header and failed to react quickly enough to keep out Edin Dzeko’s long-range shot as Manchester City initially stunned Manchester United at Wembley. “I have to adapt quickly and improve on the whole of my game,” he said. “The two goals we conceded in the first half stopped us in our tracks but in the second half we were able to claw it back. And that’s the important thing. I’m very happy about the victory. I don’t think I will have problems getting to grips with the game in England. Football is football in any country.” Defender Chris Smalling says De Gea, 20, showed character in the second half. “He’ll learn from things like that,” said Smalling. “He made some great saves, so it’s good to see he’s not going to be down about it.”

Elsewhere, the Independent claim Gabriel Obertan will join Newcastle United and quote Magpies boss Alan Pardew on the move: "I wanted to bring pace and he will bring us genuine pace," he said.

There's also plenty of praise for Tom Cleverley in the papers. In the Daily Mail, former Reds Reserves boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says: "He is the type of player you want in every squad. There are talented players and then players like Tom who have everything. Tom is a class act as a person and a great player to have in a group."

alamak EPL dah nak setat, kota lundang pulak tengah riot, camne nak maen ni :cry:

The start of the Premier League season this weekend is facing major disruption after its officials said they would decide tomorrow whether or not to call off the three opening fixtures set to take place in London following further rioting in the city.

Fulham versus Aston Villa, Queens Park Rangers against Bolton and Everton's visit to Tottenham, where the violence which has spread across the capital first erupted on Saturday, remain in the balance after a fourth day of violence, with the Premier League unwilling to confirm the games will go ahead until they have held further discussions with the clubs in question and the Metropolitan policeon Wednesday.

The Football League has taken the same stance, meaning all London-based games in the Championship, League One and Two as well could be called off. Fears are also growing that the disorder in London could impact on next summer's Olympic Games, with the Metropolitan Police Authority describing the situation in the capital as "extremely worrying".

The Premier League said that it would allow local police forces to make a final decision regarding the staging of this weekend's top-flight games but after the Football Association called off England's friendly with Holland at Wembley and West Ham, Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace postponed their respective home Carling Cup ties with Aldershot Town, Reading and Crawley Town on Tuesday night for the same reason, it decided to take a more decisive stance.

"The Premier League and Football League are saddened by the recent incidents of civil unrest and the effect it is having on local communities," read a joint statement. "We are in on-going discussions with our London-based clubs, the Metropolitan police and statutory authorities in regard to the staging of the coming weekend's fixtures in the capital.

"The Metropolitan police has conveyed to us the dynamic nature of the current situation and with that in mind all parties will review the situation on Thursday and make a further public statement then."

The statement went on to say that "with the information currently available, there is no reason to think any matches outside of London will be affected", though clubs in cities that have also been hit by the riots, most notably Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool, remain on alert. West Bromwich Albion said they are "monitoring what is an evolving situation" ahead of Manchester United's visit to The Hawthorns on Sunday and Bristol City also postponed their Carling Cup game with Swindon.

Somewhat oddly, while Bristol City's Carling Cup tie with Swindon last night was called off following advice from local police, Bristol Rovers' tie with Watford, scheduled for tonight, goes ahead, as does the club's League Two home fixture against Torquay on Saturday.

"We are not totally sure why this is the case, but believe it because Bristol City verses Swindon is a local derby and so would require a level of police resources that are just not available due to the problems taking place in the city at the moment," said a Rovers spokesperson.Meanwhile the International Olympic Committee said it was confident the Olympics would be secure but made clear responsibility for a safe Games lay with the British government and Metropolitan police. It said: "Security at the Olympic Games is a top priority for the IOC. It is, however, directly handled by the local authorities, as they know best what is appropriate and proportionate. We are confident they will do a good job in this domain."

Nani hails best game ever

Simply the best

"I am very well there. I think it's the best club in the world and want to stay there and work well. It's good to know that big clubs are interested in me but, right now, I'm very satisfied with my club and I want to continue with them." - Nani

Nani feels he's hit top form after declaring Sunday's man-of-the-match performance in the Community Shield as his best-ever.

The Portugal winger came off the bench in his country's 5-0 demolition of Luxembourg on Wednesday and is in confident mood ahead of the season opener against West Brom.

After having to deal with speculation about interest from Italy all summer, the former Sporting Lisbon star believes the the fact he is settled at United is enabling him to fulfil his enormous potential.

"I think it's fantastic because it is always a big derby," he told RTPN, when asked about last weekend. "We were losing 2-0 but we came back to get the result.

"We played an excellent game and I scored two goals. I came out of there very happy and I think that was my best game ever because it was a final and because it gave us a trophy.

"I always give my best, I'm fine and I want to stay that way until the end of the season."

As regards the talk of interest from Inter Milan and Juventus, he was happy to once again quash any talk of moving away from Old Trafford.

"I am very well there," he said of United. "I think it's the best club in the world and want to stay there and work well.

"It's good to know that big clubs are interested in me but, right now, I'm very satisfied with my club and I want to continue with them."

Papers: Nev writes off Kop
11/08/2011 10:00
Martin Blackburn writes in The Sun...

Neville: Liverpool haven’t got a prayer
Gary Neville has told old rivals Liverpool their desperate 21-year wait for the title is set to continue. The Kop are starting to dream again with Kenny Dalglish back in charge and more than £100million spent on new players this calendar year. Ex-Manchester United skipper Neville knows all about the longing which comes from such a barren run. And he reckons it has got to the point where Liverpool need to win it again - although he does not see it happening this year. Neville, 36, said: “Liverpool are getting to that point where they need that success now. The club demands it. Going back to 1992-3 you just become very desperate and very wanting. You become needy. You feel like it's a goal, it's a challenge, rather than something to get excited about. You can see exactly what Kenny Dalglish is trying to do there. He has brought an identity back to the club. Whether they can go on and win the title... I'm not sure whether that will happen this season.”

The same paper also claims Tom Cleverley is at the centre of a cash row between United and former club Bradford City, who reportedly want 10 per cent of all loan fees received for the England international since he joined the Reds as a schoolboy. Cleverley, who made his competitive United debut in the FA Community Shield win over Manchester City, has enjoyed individual loan spells with Leicester, Watford and Wigan.

Elsewhere, Danny Welbeck is confident of earning a starting role at Old Trafford, despite intense competitions for places up front. The striker told the Daily Star: “My main aim is to break into the team and get a partnership going with whoever is up front.”

Keane: Reds are a machine

Birthday boy Roy Keane has predicted United will retain the Barclays Premier League title.

The Irishman, who turned 40 on Wednesday, spoke to The Sun after appearing in a charity game at Parkhead to raise funds to fight poverty in East Africa.

It is clear the former Reds skipper believes Sir Alex once again has the strongest squad at his disposal.

"Even Sir Alex Ferguson said the other day the league's getting tougher," said Keane. "But I don't think so.

"If United are really at it, which they will be, they'll win it comfortably. Even last year when United were slipping up, no team was strong enough to take advantage of it.

"United have bought well. People talk about losing experience and I appreciate that [Edwin] van der Sar, [Gary] Neville and [Paul] Scholes have all retired. But they have good young players coming through - and Wayne Rooney can play better than he did last season.

"When you look at the players they have left behind, they have [Nemanja] Vidic, Rio [Ferdinand], Darren Fletcher - these are all international players. And Giggsy is still there, too. United don't let players go unless they know they have players coming through to replace them.

"Ashley Young and Phil Jones are good players, Chris Smalling is coming through and Danny Welbeck is a good player coming back after being on loan at Sunderland last season.

"And when the older lads come to the end in four or five years, you'll have the likes of Jones and Smalling to step in with five or six years' experience behind them. It's like a machine. You can talk all you like about other teams getting stronger but, for me, United have got stronger as well.

"They're going to do the business. Of all the teams, if one has the balance right, I believe it's United."

West Brom 1 United 2

The champions kicked off the Barclays Premier League season with a hard-fought victory at West Brom, repeating last season's 2-1 success thanks to a strike from Wayne Rooney and an own goal by Steven Reid.

Rooney drilled in an early opener but debutant Shane Long shot past David De Gea for a surprise equaliser and it took Young, on his first league appearance for the Reds, to set up the winner with nine minutes left.

United made an impressive statement of intent from the first whistle as the bold, youthful line-up selected by Sir Alex posted a positive start. Although Paul Scharner managed the first effort of note, it was all United and there was no surprise when Wayne Rooney drew first blood - as he did in this fixture last term.

Rooney expertly flicked a Fabio pass out to Young before collecting the return ball and curling a left-footed finish beyond the reach of Ben Foster in the 13th minute. The Reds were in control with Rooney blasting wide after being afforded too much space and Nani casually lifting a finish wastefully over the top following good approach work by Rooney and Danny Welbeck.

Nani again shot too high when Foster could only pat down a Young corner but Albion worked their way back into the game ominously. De Gea made a flying stop to thwart Scharner, who had stormed onto Long's lay-off but, two minutes later, the Spanish keeper coped less effectively when
Long decided to have a crack himself. The Irishman fired across de Gea when Chris Smalling was unable to prevent the shot from the left-hand side of the box.

Conceding an equaliser was harsh on United but the defence seemed to lose some concentration as Fabio's panicky header away allowed Chris Brunt to volley over the bar. And de Gea had to claw away a Somen Tchoyi cross that deflected off Nemanja Vidic and worryingly looped goalwards as half-time approached.

The second period became less eventful and there was a blow when captain Vidic finally made way after failing to shrug off a knock. United failed to carry any significant threat with Rooney glancing a header wide from a rare half-chance and Nani's free-kick coming to nothing after Young was felled on the edge of the box by Brunt.

Dimitar Berbatov was introduced in a bid to add more of a cutting edge but it was Young who continued to provide much of the attacking thrust. The former Aston Villa winger's dipping shot drifted just wide of the far post with Foster flailing at thin air.

Nani sent an awkward header wide from Fabio's left-wing cross and the visitors' attempts to create any sustained pressure were affected when another injury disrupted the defence - with Ferdinand having to be replaced by Phil Jones, leaving a very youthful back-five for the final quarter of an hour.
Such setbacks would have a major detrimental impact on lesser teams but the champions are made of sterner stuff and snatched the winner with nine minutes left. Berbatov played the ball off to Young, who showed real intent to fly down the left past Brunt and see his cross deflect off Tamas and, ultimately, Reid before nestling in the back of the net.

Tchoyi lashed one effort off target and De Gea safely fielded a Brunt effort as the Reds held out - to their great credit - to start the defence of the title with a valuable away win.

Sir Alex backs new signings

Sir Alex Ferguson had words of praise or support for the players making their first Barclays Premier League starts for United on Sunday.

While Ashley Young created both goals in United’s  2-1 win over West Brom and Tom Cleverley built on his top-flight experience with Wigan, David de Gea had a more difficult time, conceding a goal that the boss admitted he “should have done better for.”

“I think it was just a bit of concentration there,” said Sir Alex, referring to the moment Shane Long’s cross-shot slid past de Gea’s hands.

“I patted him on the head and said, ‘Welcome to English football’ because he took a battering in the second half. He should have maybe been protected more by the referee but he withstood it and it was a good experience for him. David is only 20 years of age. We expect a learning process at the moment and we'll see it through.”

De Gea can draw comfort from Sir Alex’s comparison with the early days in England for Peter Schmeichel, arguably United's best keeper of all time.

“Ours is a different type of game for goalkeepers coming in from Europe,” reflected the boss. “Schmeichel was the same when he came. Wimbledon away on a Wednesday night was his first away game and they gave him a torrid time. Then in the home game on the following Saturday against Leeds he lost a really bad goal but Peter went on to be possibly the greatest goalkeeper of all time."

Sir Alex felt West Brom’s equaliser came when United’s previously fluid outfield players took their foot off the gas.
“The first 25 minutes I thought we were superb,” he said. “Our movement of the ball was great, the interchanging and speed of our play was great. Then for some reason we started to slow down the build-up to a level where we lost that momentum.”

United finally regained the lead in the 81st minute when Young worked his way down the left and delivered a low ball that took one or two deflections before beating Ben Foster, the former Reds keeper now in West Brom’s goal.

“He's got good composure on the ball and he's not just a crosser, his interplay with the rest of the players was good,” praised Sir Alex. “He made the first goal for Wayne Rooney with a good pass and he was a threat all the time. He had a few crosses blocked and when he decided to go the opposite way and go towards the byline, he had instant success. Okay, it was an own goal but he created the danger by getting to the byline.”

Young wasn’t the only one earning the manager’s praise after helping the Reds to overcome a West Brom side “galvanised” by Roy Hodgson and described by Sir Alex as "a handful going forward. The lad Tchoyi gave us a hard time."

“We had some good performances. Rooney was fantastic today, he was all over the pitch. Young Cleverley did well and I have to say when your two most experienced players have to come off in the second half, it's not easy for a young defender to go on. But Phil Jones and Jonny Evans were terrific, absolutely terrific.”

Young: Big things to come

AshleyYoung is predicting "big things" for United after helping the Reds beatWest Brom on the opening weekend of the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League.

Thesummer signing from Aston Villa was one of the standout performers atThe Hawthorns; he cited the champions' legendary perseverance as a keyfactor in the 2-1 victory over the Baggies.

“It was the firstgame of the season and we knew it was going to be tough going to TheHawthorns," said Young. "We had to grind it out and that’s what we did.

"We havegot that never-say-die attitude and we keep going until the finalwhistle, and we got the rewards at the end of the day when we got thewinner."

Young has impressed many with the rate at which he hassettled into life at United. The England winger credits that to hisinternational experiences but also to the team spirit that's already inplace at Carrington and Old Trafford.

"Obviously I have playedwith a few of the boys with England and you get to know their gamethere," he said. "I've got to know those players even more throughtraining and pre-season here.

“Everyone has got a greatunderstanding of how to play and that’s why the players here have wonso many titles. Now I'm here, whenever I go out and put on the Unitedshirt, I want to do well. I think there are big things to come fromthis team."

Young admitted his fellow new signing David de Geawas "of course disappointed" about conceding a relatively softfirst-half equaliser scored by West Brom's Shane Long, but the ex-Villa player didn't dwell on the topic and instead focused more on the team's performance.

“Wewere always going to create chances throughout the ninety-plus minutes. That is the way we are drilled and worked, to play until the finalwhistle. That is what we did and we knew we’d get another couple ofchances. Luckily mine went in and it was nice to get the win.”

Boss: We'll cope with injuries

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to reshuffle his defensive pack as his squad's strength in depth is put to an early test.

Both central defensive pillars Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand were substituted in Sunday's 2-1 win at West Brom while right-back Rafael had previously joined left-back Patrice Evra on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder in training on Friday.

Evra should be back for the clash with Tottenham but Ferdinand will be out for around a month-and-a-half, thus presenting more opportunities for the younger defenders in the Reds' ranks.

"We've had a torrid two or three days," Sir Alex admitted to Sky Sports. "Rafael hurt his shoulder in training and is out for 10 weeks as he's going to need an operation.

"Rio has hurt his hamstring and will be out for six weeks. With Vida, we don't know whether it's a nerve problem with his calf or not. He'll have that checked tomorrow. He could be out a couple of weeks. But with Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones here, it's a godsend to be honest with you. Also, Patrice Evra will be back next week, he'll be fit, so I've got options."

Ferguson defends De Gea blunder

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has come to the defence of goalkeeper David De Gea after United's 2-1 victory against West Brom at the Hawthornes.

A late own-goal from Steven Reid which was created by Ashley Young gave the Red Devils victory, which spared De Gea's blushes after the United goalkeeper had earlier inexplicably dived over Shane Long's shot to gift the Baggies an equaliser to Wayne Rooney's 12th-minute strike.

Ferguson believes the Spaniard will soon get to grips with the Premier League.

"The first 25 minutes we were superb, the movement of the ball was great, but then we slowed and lost momentum," he said.

"We lost a goal which David should have done better with.

"It was just a bit of concentration there but welcome to English football. He came in for it in the second half and I thought he should have been protected more by the referee, but it was a good experience for him.

"It's all a learning process."

United new boy Ashley Young admitted it had been a hard day's work at the Hawthorns.

The winger was instrumental in the decisive goal 10 minutes from time, when Reid turned Young's cross past Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster into his own net.

And Young was relieved his side prevailed in the end.

"It's the first game of season, we knew it was going to be tough coming to the Hawthorns but we have a never-say-die attitude and work to final whistle, and we got our rewards in the end," he told Sky Sports 1.

"I thought we looked like scoring whenever we went forward, but we knew we'd have to grind it out and that's what we did.

On De Gea's earlier error, Young added: "Obviously he was disappointed with the goal, but we're always going to create chances throughout the 90 minutes.

"We're drilled to play to the final whistle and that's what we did.
