Premier League: Scholes fires United to the summit

Paul Scholes' 100th Premier League goal was enough for Manchester United to leapfrog back to into top spot.

Scholes settled a tense encounter with Wolves at Molineux 17 minutes from time, when he kept a cool head to beat Marcus Hahnemann after Jody Craddock's clearance had fallen nicely for the veteran midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson will hope the goal helps persuade Scholes to sign a one-year contract extension he is presently stalling over.

However, Ferguson will also be fretting on the fitness of Wayne Rooney after watching Sam Vokes waste a glorious chance to equalise in stoppage time.

There have been consistent claims that Rooney has been carrying United this season and this was a chance for his team-mates to prove otherwise, as the England ace did not even make the bench, his manager rating his talisman "a big doubt'' to face AC Milan on Wednesday.

Instead, their efforts merely confirmed the view.

Isolated up front, Dimitar Berbatov failed to get involved as Rooney would have done. After a three-match ban, Nani appeared to have regressed to his maddening form of old and Antonio Valencia was not his usual self out wide.

Darron Gibson was the only United player to threaten the Wolves goal but his best effort was the shot he prodded wide after a poor Nani free-kick had bounced into his path off Berbatov.

It was Wolves who carried the greater threat.

Having angered the Premier League with his team selection at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture last December, there was never a chance of Mick McCarthy leaving players out this time.

United might have been aiming for top spot but they have hardly been convincing this term and on their previous visits to newly-promoted clubs were beaten at Burnley and only drew at Birmingham.

Former Red Devil David Jones was set up by Matt Jarvis following a forceful run from the excellent Kevin Doyle and might have tested Edwin van der Sar had it not been for Michael Carrick's saving tackle.

Stephen Ward had the golden opportunity though. Jarvis was again the provider, after darting down the right on the overlap. His deep cross found Ward completely unmarked and he only had to beat Edwin Van der Sar to score but he nodded tamely straight at the veteran Dutchman.

The introduction of Gary Neville at the break might not have been an obvious attacking move but the experienced full-back helped his side get a measure of control for the first time.

Patrice Evra and Michael Carrick both had chances and Jody Craddock also needed to act fast to rob Berbatov after Wolves had got their offside trap all wrong as they attempted to defend a Carrick cross.

Ferguson was then deeply unhappy at Nani being flattened by Jody Craddock as he raced forward trying to support Valencia, who had galloped down the right.

Jarvis flashed a shot wide after cutting in from the left flank and Nemanja Vidic was booked for chopping down Karl Henry.

But United finally got on top and Scholes they have a player who will be remembered years from now, for both invention and goals.

Finding the net may have been a problem in recent seasons for the midfielder but this term there have been signs of that old instinct returning.

And when Craddock drilled Nani's low cross straight to the former England man he had the common sense not to rush, instead nipping past the defender's desperate lunge before drilling his shot into the far corner.

It brought up his century of Premier League goals and his 148th overall for United.

Far more importantly, it left them staring down at their rivals from that familiar position on the Premier League summit.

Mame Biram Diouf could not add to the lead when he failed to find the target with a free header.

And United breathed a collective sigh of relief when Vokes slashed high over the top when he should have scored and headed narrowly wide soon after before the whistle confirmed the champions had reclaimed first place.

Rooney doubtful for United's clash with Milan

Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for Manchester United's Champions League clash against Milan, manager Alex Ferguson said on Saturday.
Rooney missed United's 1-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a knee injury which he aggravated playing the full 90 minutes for England against Egypt mid-week.
"Rooney is very doubtful for the Milan game unfortunately," Ferguson told MUTV. "It's one of these bad bits of luck you get -- the Wembley pitch has just killed him."
Ferguson had criticised his leading striker for playing from start to finish in England's friendly on a leg-sapping Wembley pitch, just three days after scoring the winner in the League Cup final.
"It is his own enthusiasm that has caused it. His problem is that he can't say no," Ferguson said of Rooney who has scored 23 Premier League goals this season.
United won the opening leg of their first knockout round tie 3-2 in the San Siro but the loss of Rooney for Wednesday's match would be a blow, especially with Michael Owen ruled out for the season.
Ferguson said Dimitar Berbatov would most likely start against Milan.
"I was pleased with how Berbatov did against Wolves though and I'll probably start with him on Wednesday," Ferguson said.

Ferguson rubbishes Red Knights link

Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected a newspaper report claiming he is supporting the Red Knights' Manchester United takeover bid.

The Old Trafford boss was reportedly in support of any potential buyout of the Glazer family by the wealthy consortium, while there were suggestions he would be prepared to invest his own money in the club if the bid were to succeed.

However, Ferguson has rejected any supposed involvement or support in the takeover as he said: "It's absolute rubbish. There's not an ounce of truth in it."

A United spokesman backed up Ferguson's words, claiming: "The Glazer family and the manager enjoy 100% trust in each other."

Thousands of fans have joined the green and gold protest against the Glazers by wearing the colours of Newton Heath, the club which predated United.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust, the chief opponents of the present Glazer regime, have reported a massive surge in membership over the last few weeks.

They now claim to have in excess of 100,000 supporters registered - fuelled partly by the Red Knights, a group of leading City financiers who are looking to raise in excess of £1billion to seize control at Old Trafford.

United chief executive David Gill this week insisted the present owners had no wish to sell, despite the massive debts incurred in their controversial takeover.

And Ferguson joked on Friday he welcomes "all sinners" to Manchester United, while insisting he has no problem with the green and gold protests.

He has some friends among the Red Knights, including leading investment banker Jim O'Neill, and said: "I have no problem with protest.

"There were plenty of green and gold scarves on Sunday (in the Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa) and I was delighted to see them supporting the club.

"We are quite happy. As long as they are supporting Manchester United they can wear whatever they like.

"I have no issue with the Red Knights. I know some of them. I don't deny them their right to protest.

"If they want to try and buy the club that is entirely up to them.

Jumpa Milan tanpa Rooney

Ferguson masih berang tindakan Wayne beraksi menentang England

Ferguson has funds to sign new striker and goalkeeper
Sir Alex Ferguson will be allowed to spend up to £80 million this summer as he targets a new striker and goalkeeper.

Ferguson has been reluctant to spend big money and has said inrecent months that he feels there is a lack of value in the market, buthe now acknowledges that Manchester United cannot continue to rely soheavily on Wayne Rooney and will look to bring in a new forward when the transfer window reopens.

Edwin van der Sarrecently agreed a one-year contract extension to remain at Old Traffordnext season but, at 39, his time at the top level looks limited, soFerguson would like to bring in one of the world's top goalkeepers toreplace him.

United raised £80 million from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldoto Real Madrid in the summer but reinvestment in the market was limitedand there were suspicions that the Glazers were using the remainingfunds elsewhere in the business.

However, it has emerged that the cashpile is still available for new signings.

An insider told Soccernet:"There is no doubt that the money from the sale of Ronaldo is there forSir Alex to spend, and any other money he raises through sales. SirAlex needs a striker and a goalkeeper, and the players of the qualityUnited demand means that they would be extremely expensive and, whileSir Alex likes value for money, he does need these two players for nextseason as a matter of priority."

Ferguson has been left to dealwith team matters without any interference from the Glazers, and forthat reason he is supportive of their ownership of the club andunwilling to go behind their backs to back the Red Knights' potentialtakeover.

"Sir Alex is not involved with the Red Knights, norwould he be," the insider added. "It's preposterous to even suggest it.In any case, their bid is not reality.

"No one is going toforce the Glazers to sell, and I would doubt whether the Glazers wouldeven entertain these guys, even if they did change their minds one day. There seems to be no proof of funds - the likelihood is that they wouldborrow heavily in any case - so what is the difference?"
