Scholes scores in testimonal
August 6, 2011

Paul Scholes marked his Manchester United farewell with a trademark stunner as the champions eased to an emphatic win over the New York Cosmos in his testimonial.

Pele made the trip to support Paul Scholes
Scholes, 36, who retired at the end of last season, opened the scoring at a sell-out Old Trafford with a fierce 20-yard strike after just eight minutes.
Scholes left the field to a standing ovation after 75 minutes as United, featuring a number of players who may feature in the Community Shield on Sunday, enjoyed a comfortable run-out.
The famously reticent Scholes - who made 676 appearances and scored 150 goals in a glittering 17-year United career that included 10 Premier League titles - had certainly lived up to his pre-match hope.
"I'm not someone that likes too much attention and tonight that's what it is about,'' Scholes told MUTV before the game. "All eyes are going to be on me, watching everything I do.
"I just hope I have a good game. I know how good these fans have been. They have been really good to me over the past 16 or 17 years so hopefully tonight I can do something to make them happy.
"Let's just hope it's a good game and there are plenty of goals.''
Despite the proximity of the match to Sunday's season-opening Wembley clash against Manchester City, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson honoured Scholes by fielding a strong team alongside him.
The evening also gave United fans the chance to pay tribute to another club legend, Eric Cantona, now director of soccer at the Cosmos.
Cantona greeted Scholes before kick-off and was given a reception far louder than that afforded to all-time great Pele, who is part of the reborn Cosmos' promotional drive.
The revived American team are hoping to earn a place in Major League Soccer in 2013 and relive their 1970s glory days when a previous incarnation of the team featured Pele and Johan Cruyff.
They lined up with an invitational team filled with familiar names including two of Scholes' former United team-mates in Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.
Former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder Patrick Vieira came off the bench in the second half and received the only boos of the night.
Scholes, who also won 66 England caps, set the game alight as the crowd beckoned him to shoot from outside the box early on.
Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel had little chance of keeping out a powerful effort that flew into the top corner.
Despite the routine nature of some of the contest, it was a genuine top-class strike evocative of so many from a fine career.
Scholes turned down the chance to add a second from the penalty spot, as Wayne Rooney did the honours after a foul on Ashley Young before Anderson, one of seven half-time changes, added a third after 50 minutes.
Danny Welbeck claimed the fourth after a defensive mix-up and Mame Biram Diouf beat substitute goalkeeper Chad Calderone twice in quick succession to complete the scoring.
Scholes, who made his debut in 1994, returned to the pitch after the game to address the crowd.
"I hope I gave them a few decent memories,'' he said, rather modestly. |

Dua gol Nani bantu United tewaskan City
2011/08/08

Man United vs Man City Player Ratings
ESPNSTAR.com take a look at who's hot and who's not in the Community Shield clash between Manchester United and Manchester City.
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 7
It was a game of two halves for the City goalkeeper. Had a reasonably quiet first-half but was not able to save his from crumbling against United in the second.
Micah Richards - 8
Was a solid rock in the City defence. Did well to block off a number of the United attacks with his sheer muscular presence.
Vincent Kompany - 7
The City captain led by example at the heart of the City defence and kept the likes of Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck under the palm of his hands. But he spoiled his afternoon with a mistake that led to Nani's winning goal.
Joleon Lescott - 6.5
The former Everton defender appeared the weakest link at the back for City - losing possession on a couple of occasions in the first-half. But he more than made up for his defensive lapses with the opening goal.
Aleksandar Kolarov (Off 73') - 6.5
An effective performance by the Serbian left-back in the first-half. But was tore into pieces by Nani and company after the break.
Nigel de Jong - 7
Did what he was supposed to do - break up and frustrate United's play. And not forgetting he did well to stay on the pitch!
Yaya Toure - 7
The former Barcelona man did well as an anchor in City's midfield, pulling the strings and spreading the play.
David Silva - 8
The Spaniard continues to be the chief playmaker and engine in City's attack. And he proved that yet again with another impressive performance - linking well with the strikers. It was his cross that led to Lescott's opening goal.
James Milner (Off 67') - 6
A typically industrious performance by the England international. But he was never the key to unlock United's defence. Replaced by Johnson in the second-half.
Mario Balotelli (Off 59') - 5
Much is expected from the tempestuous Italian after his impressive pre-season with City. But he was a peripheral figure against United. Was taken off at the hour-mark.
Edin Dzeko - 7.5
What a stunner of a goal by the Bosnian striker - although De Gea should have done better to prevent it. Else, Dzeko was kept generally quiet by the United defence.
Substitutions:
Gareth Barry (On 59') - 6
A decent game for the England man after coming on at the hour-mark.
Gaël Clichy (On 73') - 6
The summer signing from Arsenal failed to make any meaningful impact after coming on for Kolarov.
Adam Johnson (On 67') - 6
Was brought on for Milner to inject more pace into City's attack. But United stood firm.
Man United
David de Gea - 5
The Spaniard couldn't have asked for a worst competitive debut for United, can he? While he could have done nothing about the first goal, much was left to be desired of him for Dzeko's goal, which was definitely within his range.
Chris Smalling - 7
The young defender made a strong claim for a place in Ferguson's starting line-up in the upcoming season with a solid performance at right-back.
Rio Ferdinand (Off 45') - 5
His marking on Lescott was questionable as he allowed the former Everton defender to head in from Silva's cross. Taken off at half-time for new signing Phil Jones.
Nemanja Vidic (Off 45') - 6
The United captain was not severely tested by the City strikers but could have done more to prevent City's opening goal.
Patrice Evra (Off 71') - 7.5
The French left-back was impressive both going forward and in defence. Was eventually replaced by Rafael in the second-half.
Nani - 9.5 (Man-of-the-match)
A stunning performance by the Portuguese winger - scoring two goals to cap off an incredible comeback for United.
Michael Carrick (Off 45') - 5
Many questioned Ferguson's decision to start with the ageing midfielder and they were justified. The former Tottenham man looked out-of-pace in the first-half and was taken off at half-time for a much more impactful Tom Cleverly.
Anderson - 8
The Brazilian is slowly but surely establishing himself in the United midfield and he further impressed with an inspired performance.
Ashley Young - 9
What a signing he could turn out to be for United. The summer signing from Aston Villa was the biggest threat for Ferguson's men, causing City tons of problem with his pace and trickery on the left.
Wayne Rooney - 9
A typical 'Wayne Rooney' performance. The England international was at the centre of most United's attacks all afternoon.
Danny Welbeck (Off 89') - 7.5
The much improved United striker has been impressive during pre-season and he continued his form against City. Could play a big role for his side in the upcoming season.
Substitutions:
Phil Jones (On 45') - 7
The summer signing from Blackburn was brought on for Ferdinand and did well to keep the City attack at bay.
Tom Cleverley (On 45') - 8
Should have started the game for United ahead of the ineffective Carrick, whom he replaced at half-time. Credit to the young midfielder, he had an instant impact for United, setting up Nani's stunning equalizer. Had a couple of chances himself but lacked the composure to convert them.
Jonathan Evans (On 45') - 7
Had lots to prove to Ferguson and did his chances no harm with a solid showing at the heart of United's defence after coming on at half-time.
Rafael (On 71') - 7
Was surprisingly handed the captain's armband after coming on for Evra and did well to keep Johnson quiet.
Dimitar Berbatov (On 89') - N/A |

Young welcomes Cleverley
Ashley Young has congratulated team-mate Tom Cleverley on his first call-up to the England senior squad.
The 21-year-old midfielder was outstanding as United overturned a two-goal deficit against City in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday after replacing Michael Carrick at the interval.
With Carrick still struggling with an Achilles problem, and Jack Wilshere also withdrawing from Fabio Capello's party ahead of the clash with Holland, the Italian coach has turned to Cleverley to increase his midfield options.
"He has done terrific in pre-season and when I have seen him," Young told a press conference on Monday. "I think if you saw the game on Sunday, he was brilliant when he came on and he has got a great future ahead of him.
"I’m sure he will be delighted to join up with the squad. He has been tremendous and I’m sure he will go on to be a top player.
"He is confident in his own ability and I’m sure he will come here and do well. He knows a few of the players here and he will be very welcomed into the squad."
Young is concentrating on getting into the starting line-up himself after shining as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Switzerland. The wide man has been splendid form at international level and feels the summer switch to Old Trafford will only enhance his claims.
"Hopefully it will boost my England chances even more so than when I was with Aston Villa," stated the Reds' summer recruit. "I have said that moving to Manchester United will improve my chances of getting a regular starting place.
"As long as I am playing well for Manchester United, fingers crossed, I can start for England as well." |

International Reds
The new Barclays Premier League season may be a matter of days away but, first, there's an international schedule to fit in this Wednesday.
Consequently, a number of Reds will be away this week representing their countries with Tom Cleverley elevated to the full England squad for the first time by Fabio Capello. However, Michael Carrick is out and there's a doubt over Danny Welbeck earning his second cap in the friendly against Holland.
"Danny got an ankle injury towards the end [on Sunday]," said the boss. "England will have to assess whether he is going to be fit for Wednesday."
Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Young are also included in Capello's squad.
Jonny Evans has the serious matter of European Championship qualifying to look forward to as Northern Ireland entertain Faroe Islands while there are some high-profile friendlies taking place across Europe.
Darron Gibson is in the Republic of Ireland party for the Dublin encounter against Croatia, while Anders Lindegaard could add to his four caps for Denmark when the Danes travel to Glasgow to face Scotland but there's no Darren Fletcher in the home side's squad as he continues to regain full fitness.
Nemanja Vidic is set for a return to Russia with Serbia and Nani is in Portugal's plans for the fixture with Luxembourg in Faro. Mame Biram Diouf, who scored twice in Paul Scholes' testimonial, was called up to Senegal's squad for their clash with Morocco, but Javier Hernandez and Antonio Valencia will miss Mexico and Ecuador's games due to injury.
Brazil coach Mano Menezes did not name Anderson, Fabio or Rafael in his squad for the international with Germany.
Robbie Brady (Republic of Ireland), Oliver Norwood (Northern Ireland) and Federico Macheda are all on Under-21 duty. |

Nani a confirmed starter
Sir Alex has confirmed Nani is first-choice again after the winger's two-goal show at Wembley in the Community Shield.
The Portugal international has had to contend with unfair comparisons to former colleague Cristiano Ronaldo since arriving at Old Trafford and lost his place to Antonio Valencia for some of last term's run-in after the ex-Wigan wide man's return to fitness coincided with Nani being injured at Anfield.
With the former Sporting Lisbon star appearing to be firing on all cylinders again, he has already been assured of a place in the team for the Barclays Premier League opener at West Brom on Sunday.
"Nani had a fantastic season last year," enthused the boss. "He made 15 assists and scored eight or nine goals. He was unfortunate that Antonio Valencia came in at a time when we needed a bit of freshness and a boost to the squad. Valencia was fantastic.
"You have seen the form of Nani in pre-season and today. He will start the season. He is only in Ronaldo's shadow because he is Portuguese. He was never in his shadow in my mind. That is the only link I can see. He has always had great potential.
"Some players take longer to mature than others. Ronaldo was an exception. He was an incredible footballer. He matured immediately, from 18 until he left us. Stage by stage, he got better and better." |

Sneijder keen on United moveAugust 9, 2011
Wesley Sneijder has confirmed he would like to join Manchester United and suggested 'unofficial talks' have taken place.
GettyImagesWesley Sneijder would welcome a move to Manchester United
Sneijder, 27, has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and, though both clubs have denied talks have taken place, the Inter Milan star revealed at the weekend his club need the money.
Asked if he was keen on a move to Manchester United, Sneijder has now said: "Yes, but nobody has called officially. Maybe there have been unofficial talks.
"The situation is that I am an Inter Milan player, but there's a chance that I will leave. If something crosses my path, I have enough time to take a decision about it. It is down to the club. If a good bid comes in, they have to let me go. They don't want to lose me but there's a chance they will."
Sneijder is set to play for Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday and he added: "I am leaving England after the game, but if I get permission, I have to go back."
Netherlands team-mate Rafael van der Vaart said Sneijder will be fully prepared for life in the Premier League.
"Of course he would like to play in England," he told Sky Sports News. "It's the biggest league in the world. He is a good friend of mine and we have contact almost every day. He knows what to expect in the Premier League."
Asked if he will be playing against Sneijder in the upcoming season, he said: "I hope not because Man U are going to be stronger, but he's a great player and he fits in well at Man U."
