[EXCLUSIVE] Behind The Scenes with Cube Entertainment
Do you want to know how BEAST and 4minute are in real life? Well, lucky for you, because KPOPLIVEwill give you exclusive information on who they are off-cam.
We recently met with MCA Music’s former International Label Manager Katherine Choy. She was one of the people who spear-headed BEAST and 4minute’s promo tours and so rest assured that we can take her word for it.
In the past, we reported that Cube Entertainment signed with Universal Music Group (UMG) when the two groups were new and to put it simply, UMG is the mother company of MCA Music. That was how it all started.
Back in February 2010, 4minute toured Asia for the promotion of their album For Muzik. One of their destinations was Philippines, making them the second K-Pop group, with SHINee being the first, to meet the fans on a more intimate level. The group was very eager to do the meet. When the album signing was almost over, the girls insisted on extending in order to accommodate more fans
.KPOPLIVE: First of all, kindly tell us about 4minute and your experience with them
.Ms. Choy: The girls were just like a bunch of friends who love doing things together. For a few days, the MCA and Cube staff along with them ate together, shopped together and chatted together despite of the language barrier, just like a real family. They even memorized all of the MCA staffs names. When the moment came to bid our goodbyes, every one of us, including them, became emotional and cried. That was really an unforgettable memory.
KPOPLIVE: That was indeed heartwarming. Now, could you please tell us some brief information about each of the members?
Ms. Choy: First of all, there’s JiHyun, the underrated leader. She is the mother of the group who really takes care of all her members in every way she can. When she catches you looking at her, she would look back and smile for no reason at all. Her counterpart, JiYoon, acts like the father of the group. You can really tell by her charisma on stage. Next is HyunA, the social and friendly one. When you’re going to walk with them and someone hugs your hand and walks along with you, you’ll know it’s HyunA. GaYoon is the one who looks mature. She also acts like a sophisticated and composed lady. The last, but not the least, is SoHyun. She’s the cutest of them all.
Months after, Beast, the so-called brother group of 4minute, was invited to perform at a benefit concert for young mothers last June 2010. They also went there to promote their latest album called Shock of the New Era. The signings were held on school days. Not everyone was able to attend, but even so, the said group received rave responses and support with 5,000 fans who visited them.
KPOPLIVE: Moving on, how about BEAST?
Ms. Choy: Well, since the group didn’t come for the sole purpose of signing albums, it was a little bit stressful compared with the 4minute tour because there were around 7 companies involved. Even if they stayed longer than 4minute did, their schedule was jam-packed. However, just like 4minute, the Cube staff and the boys were nice. The boys helped in preparing for meals and all of us watched the World Cup in the hotel.
KPOPLIVE: Would you like to enlighten us with each of the boys?
Ms. Choy: To start off, the boys were very shy and because of the language barrier, we didn’t reallycommunicate much. They were also surrounded by lots of bodyguards. DooJoon, the leader, is very kind and does answers mostly for the group in interviews. JunHyung, the rapper and the charismatic member, is also very quiet, but when you do him a favor, he always bows his head a lot of times.HyunSeung seems like the good boy in the group. When he eats, he doesn’t dig in like all the others do, but he eats in a very timid and feminine way. DongWoon is the most approachable due to his superb English skills. As for GiKwang, he really acts like a gentleman. He carries his luggage himself and he doesn’t forgets his manners. And then comes YoSeob, he acts like the youngest although he isn’t. When we were watching the World Cup, he was running to and fro when Korea scores. He also is very helpful in cleaning up
.It was very nice to know the other side of 4minute and BEAST besides their usual powerful charisma onstage.
Thanks to Ms. Katherine Choy for sharing to us her wonderful experience and the unexpected faces of our idols!
