Leeds go into admin, Bates buys them back

Leeds chairman Ken Bates has taken a swipe at the club's former regime for plunging the club into the serious financial difficulties which ultimately led to their relegation to League One.

The Elland Road side, who were all-but down ahead of this weekend's final match at Derby, went into administration today and so incurred a 10-point penalty which confirmed their drop into the third tier of English football.

Administrators KPMG immediately agreed to sell the club back to a newly-formed company - Leeds United Football Club Limited - with Bates, Shaun Harvey and Mark Taylor as its directors, the deal being subject to approval by creditors, at a meeting later this month, and by the Football League.

However, the former Chelsea chairman could not resist criticising former club officials for incurring huge debts.

'The action (going into administration) taken brings to an end the financial legacy left by others that we have spent millions of pounds trying to settle,' said Bates.

'But the important thing now is not to view this as the end, but the beginning of a new era.'

Bates added: 'The financial burden of the past finally pushed the club into administration following the issuing of a winding up petition by HM Revenue & Customs who will be one of the company's major creditors.

'The other parties who will suffer the biggest financial loss are institutions from which the board arranged funding: Astor Investment Holdings, Krato Trust and Forward Sports Fund who collectively will lose in excess of

KEANE AND BERBATOV WIN AWARD

Tottenham Hotspur forwards Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov have jointly won the Barclays Player of the Month Award for April, after their formidable partnership fired home eight times in five Barclays Premiership matches.

It is the first time a joint Player of the Month Award presentation has been made since Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp and Edu collected the accolade together in February 2004.

Irish international Keane started the month by netting the winner at home to Reading (1-0) and went on to score a further five times, with braces away to Wigan (3-3) and Middlesbrough (3-2).

Throughout April Keane benefited from the expert support play of strike partner Dimitar Berbatov, who was also on the scoresheet against Wigan and Middlesbrough.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.
