Obama steals hearts in Malaysia with Malay expressions
KUALA LUMPUR -
From "selamat petang (good evening)", "apa khabar (how are you)" to "terima kasih banyak (thank you very much)", US President Barack Obama's familiarity with the Malay language has won him hearts and minds on his first day of visit to Muslim-majority Malaysia.
"Hello everyone. Selamat petang," the Hawaii-born leader, who spent part of his boyhood in Indonesia, said as he joined some 400 youths at the Young South-east Asian Leaders Initiative (Yseali) townhall meeting in the University of Malaya on Sunday, reported The Star newspaper.
"These trips are usually all business. (But) I try to hold events like this where I get to hear directly from young people like you," he told the eager crowd at the Kuala Lumpur campus, who clapped and cheered in excitement whenever Mr Obama peppered his speech with Malay expressions like "apa khabar", "Malaysia boleh (Malaysia can do it)" or "the spirit of kerjasama (co-operation)".
Mr Obama also took eight questions from the youths, more than 100 of whom were participants from the Young South-east Asian Leaders Initiative (Yseali), a programme launched by the US president last December.
At one point, the good-humoured president urged the "guys" to put down their hands so that the "girls'" could raise their questions. He also cozied up to the crowd at the end of the session, shaking hands with those of them who scrambled to have a picture taken with him.
Civil society groups that attended the session, however, said it was a pity that the Yseal participants had not been tough on the US president.
Lawyers for Liberty representative Michelle Yesudas told Malaysian Insider: "I would have told him that the rule of law was not being taken seriously in Malaysia, and sought his response to that."
Others suggested that more questions concerning US foreign policies and their impact on South-east Asia should have been raised, as Yseali participants were seen as the future leaders of Asean.

US National Security Adviser Susan Rice raises concerns over Anwar's case
KUALA LUMPUR -
US National Security Adviser Susan Rice yesterday met Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and expressed concern at a sodomy conviction against him that is widely seen as politically motivated.
Wrapping up a US visit to Malaysia led by President Barack Obama, Dr Rice also called on Prime Minister Najib Razak's government to ensure the rule of law in the country.
"Ambassador Rice emphasised to Mr Anwar that the United States has followed his case closely, and that the decision to prosecute him and the trial have raised a number of concerns regarding the rule of law and the independence of the courts," Agence France- Press quoted a White House statement as saying after their meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar was convicted and sentenced to five years in jail on March 7, on charges that he sodomised a former aide. He is free pending an appeal.
He says the sodomy charge is false and part of a long-running government campaign to smear his name; sodomy is illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia.
The opposition has heavily eroded the ruling coalition's control of Parliament in recent elections.
Dr Rice also said during the meeting that it was "critical for Malaysia to apply the rule of law fairly, transparently, and apolitically in order to promote confidence in Malaysia's democracy and judiciary".
Mr Obama left Malaysia yesterday morning for the Philippines as part of an Asian tour that had earlier taken him to Japan and South Korea.
The US President nudged Prime Minister Najib in a joint press briefing on Sunday to ensure rights were protected, but also indicated the issue was unlikely to stand in the way of Washington's plans to improve ties with Kuala Lumpur.
Mr Obama is keen to shore up US engagement with a region in which China's increasing assertiveness is causing growing alarm.
Anwar released a statement after the Rice meeting, saying he told her US-Malaysia ties should include not just trade and security and other traditional issues but also "human rights, good governance and democracy".
The White House raised eyebrows by leaving Anwar off Mr Obama's appointment list. But the President said sending his senior foreign policy official to the meeting signalled the importance he attached to it.
During Dr Rice's meeting with Anwar, she also met the other two leaders of the component parties of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition - Democratic Action Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and his counterpart in Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, Mr Mustafa Ali.
"Pakatan Rakyat has voiced its concerns about the Trans- Pacific Partnership, specifically its stipulation about the agricultural sector, pharmaceutical sector and the exposure to complex and costly litigation that Malaysia may face upon signing the agreement," the Malaysian Insider website quoted the Anwar statement as saying.
Mr Lim highlighted concerns about electoral integrity in Malaysia while Mr Mustafa was quoted as saying he had asked the US to chastise Malaysia for its "crippled" democracy, the news website said.

Keadilan utk semua bukan utk kita saja.

Susan turut mengulangi mesej Presiden Barack Obama bahawa AS mengalu-alukan usaha menegakkan hak asasi manusia tanpa mengira fahaman politik , etnik, bangsa atau agama. http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com ... -from-obamas-visitSo what did we gain from Obama’s visit?

Apart from signing deals and taking selfies, US president violated a Malaysian law based on religion right in the face of a high ranking Islamic official.
COMMENT
For the first time in 58 years, Malaysia was blessed with the arrival of a US president on our soil, taking the media into a frenzy.Several news agencies even put up front page news welcoming Barack Obama using the Malay greeting Selamat Datang. He arrived on Saturday and departed for the Philippines early Monday morning. So did Malaysia gain from Obama’s visit? First up is that deals worth RM1.2 billion were signed during the visit, involving a wide range of sectors including aviation, biotechnology and insurance. Sounds great? Maybe not. Malaysia does go about signing deals worth billions quite frequently, and without the need for a nation’s top leader to be around. Of course, we did achieve another milestone by being part of an international craze—selfies. Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak posted on Twitter a picture of him posing with Obama, creating quite a hype on the social media network. But the selfie has proven to be a bane on Obama. A New York based daily is going to town pouring scorn on the US President, calling it a public relations debacle. It seems that when he was in Seoul, Obama rejected a request by 13-year old Mika Taylor, who had waited for hours to take a selfie with him. His argument was that if he heeded to Taylor’s request, he would have to do the same for others. And then came his selfie with Najib a day later, paving the way for speculation that selfies with Obama are exclusive to the elite. But not everything was a disaster for Obama. Being an African-American, the president understood the challenges faced by minorities in trying to gain a footing on their own soil. Breaking the law He told his audience at a forum held at Universiti Malaya on Sunday that Malaysia could not succeed if the non-Muslims in the country weremarginalised, proving that he is a person who accepts diversity and believes in the “muhibbah” spirit we Malaysians uphold. But Obama should know that the muhibbah spirit can at times work mischief. He uttered the phrase “Insya Allah” during his visit to the National Mosque yesterday in the presence of the imam, Syaikh Ismail Muhammad. It seems that the Prime Minister’s Department failed to warn Obama that the phrase is one of more than 20 that non-Muslim cannot use under a Home Ministry ban. To put it simply, Obama broke a Malaysian law, one enacted on religious grounds. Surprisingly, though, no authoritiy—not even the Islamic Development Department (Jakim)—pounced on him. Other defenders of the faith, such as Perkasa and Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia were also silent. Indeed, instead of rebuking Obama for his transgression, Syaikh Ismail praised him for using the phrase. Could it be that our government and the right wing groups have become more tolerant to minorities? It surely cannot be that our Malaysian security forces were afraid of the US Secret Service guarding the president. How could the entire Malaysian government be scared of one security unit of the US administration? It simply does not make sense. Nevertheless, Obama was quite pleasant and respectful to our leaders, unlike former US vice president Al Gore, who came in 1998 and voiced support for Reformasi activists in the presence of our then prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
ada macai yang masih tak hilang lagi perasaan gembira dan bangga kerana obama sudi singgah ke malaysia..
