Anderson: I can fill void left by Paul Scholes at Manchester United    The Brazil international says the club can cope without the playmaker following his retirement at the end of last season, despite being linked with a move for Wesley Sneijder            27 Jul 2011 09:38:00

Manchester United midfielder Anderson believes he could be the player to step up and replace the retired Paul Scholes.

Don't Miss

Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be in the market for a midfielder to fill the void that Scholes has left, with Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

With Owen Hargreaves having also left the club after another injury-plagued season, Luka Modric and Samir Nasri are also reportedly targets for the Red Devils.

However, Brazil international Anderson believes the squad has enough quality already to cope with the loss of Scholes.

He told Sky Sports News: “Scholes was one player where I learn a lot, he was unbelievable and for me the best midfielder in the world.
"Scholes was amazing, a legend, but it means more opportunity, more space for me.
"I think Scholes was very important for the team as he had amazing quality, but I think everyone together can take his position."
United chief executive David Gill revealed on Monday that the club are still in the market for one more player.
Roma’s Mirko Vucinic and Shakhtar's Douglas Costa have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford as the club look to defend their Premier League crown.

MLS All-Stars 0-4 Man United

After pledging his short-term future to Manchester United, Dimitar Berbatov served notice he intends to fight his way back into Sir Alex Ferguson's good books with an excellent performance in a one-sided romp over the MLS All-Stars.

Anderson, Park and Berbatov were on the scoresheet for United

With Javier Hernandez back at the team hotel, having happily recovered from the concussion he suffered at Tuesday's training session, Berbatov took centre stage.

The Bulgarian played a major role in a superb one-touch move that also involved Wayne Rooney as Anderson put the visitors in front.

Then, after Park Ji-sung had added a second, a combination of skill, agility and brute force allowed Berbatov to lash home United's third, his first goal of the tour.

It was rather disappointing for All-Stars skipper David Beckham, who tried hard enough and went close on a couple of occasions, including a curling free-kick that crashed into the side-netting near the end, but lacked sufficient support.

United took some time to get going. However, it was not long before they were scoring one of those beautiful goals Berbatov said earlier this week that he likes so much.

Picking up possession 10-yards outside the box, Berbatov surged forward, fed Wayne Rooney to his left, then flicked a sublime return pass back to the England striker, who had completed the initial one-two.

Rooney spotted Anderson's midfield burst, laid the ball into the Brazilian's path and he slotted home with ease.

It was a marvellous goal by any standard and worthy of Berbatov's view of the game.

Beckham brought a fingertip save out of Anders Lindegaard, who was preferred to new arrival David de Gea, and the Dane did well once more as he pushed Brad Davis' long-range shot wide.

For all the hosts' industry, it was United who struck again just before half-time when Park collected Ashley Young's square ball and showed some neat skill inside the area before rattling a left-foot shot into the far corner.

Having claimed one brilliant assist, Berbatov then broke his duck for the tour in quite magnificent style too.

Set free by Rooney, the Bulgarian deftly lifted the ball over Tally Hall, then, when it bounced back off the bar, he controlled with his chest before volleying home from point-blank range.

Ferguson made six changes on the hour, with Berbatov one of the men replaced, although he gave his £30.75 million record signing a big smile and a handshake as he came off.

Danny Welbeck did not take long to mark his appearance, although his 20-yard effort did require a massive deflection off Geoff Cameron before it flew past Hall.

It maintained United's 100% record, although the stiffest test is still to come, against a Barcelona side that defeated them so conclusively in last season's Champions League final and have already landed more silverware, beating hosts Bayern Munich overnight to lift the annual Audi Cup.

Barcelona 1-2 Manchester United

Nani scored United's first goal
Scoring Summary
Barcelona                       Manchester United
Thiago (70')               Nani (22')
                               Michael Owen (76')

Nine weeks after being completely outplayed in the Champions League final, Manchester United finally experienced the winning feeling against Barcelona.

Michael Owen secured victory 14 minutes from time in front of a record 81,807 at Washington's FedEx Field, not long after Thiago had pulled Barca level with a magnificent curling strike.

Nani had put Sir Alex Ferguson's men into a first-half lead with a neat finish and Owen's clip over Victor Valdes after collecting Tom Cleverley's neat pass ensured United ended their five-match US tour with a 100% record.

It had been suggested the game represented some kind of revenge mission for the Red Devils.

That was not possible given Ferguson retained only three members of his starting line-up from that miserable May night.

Pep Guardiola's side was more recognisable, with six players keeping their places, and three of the other five, including Lionel Messi, were not available due to their recent stints at Copa America.

Wayne Rooney scored United's goal at Wembley and he should have put the Premier League champions in front when he met Nani's low cross at the near post but prodded wide.

Rafael was replaced by twin brother Fabio after failing to recover from a knock sustained in a crunching tackle on Seydou Keita.

It did not disrupt United too much though and when Danny Welbeck collected possession just inside the Barcelona half, Nani timed his run to perfection, sprinting onto the through ball, then dispatching his shot through the legs of Valdes.

Ibrahim Afellay should have done better than drag his shot across the face of David de Gea's goal after being set up 10 minutes before the break.

Indeed, De Gea had been relatively unemployed on his first significant appearance since his £18million summer arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Certainly, the sublime passing game with which Barca have mesmerised United in two of the past three European Cup finals was missing.

Ferguson made three changes at the break, in the process ending a satisfactory trip for Rooney, who looks certain to make a more sustained impact than last season.

Nani has rather more to prove given his omission from Ferguson's cup final starting line-up and, restored to his preferred right-wing role, seems determined to atone for his disappointment.

Barca are a week further back in their preparations but in Thiago have a player who has started pre-season in flying form.

Scorer of both goals in his side's Audi Cup win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the young midfielder is a class act.

Little wonder questions are being asked why Barca require Cesc Fabregas if they have such a talented alternative to their main men.

And the goal which levelled the game 18 minutes from time was spellbinding, a magnificent curling shot with the outside of his right foot that gave De Gea no chance.

Penalties loomed but Owen had other ideas, beating Valdes in fine style after being sent through by Cleverley.

The former England striker should have made certain in stoppage time but lifted Gabriel Obertan's cross over a completely open goal.

Sneijder believes move could happenJuly 31, 2011

Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has refused to close the door on a summer move to Manchester United, despite recent claims from United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that a deal was "dead".

Sneijder has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer, with the two clubs believed to have been in advanced negotiations for a number of weeks before relations cooled in recent times - with Sneijder's contract details believed to be a sticking point.

Nevertheless, despite United's assertion that the Dutchman would not be moving to the Premier League this summer, the 27-year-old seems to believe that a blockbuster move in the next month is still very much a possibility.
"What will happen? We will see," Sneijder said on Sunday, after Inter were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the final of the Dublin Super Cup. "There is always a chance that something will happen, but we will see.
"There is always speculation. I've said before, I've played for almost 10 years at the highest level and every year there is speculation."

Sneijder confirmed that he would be happy to remain with the Nerazzurri, but seemed to suggest that there is still a possibility he will move on before the transfer window closed.

"As you can see, I'm still here," he added. "I'm always happy. I'm a happy guy. I'm just happy to train every day with my colleagues and to train every day and to play my game for the fans.
"I've played in many competitions. I started in Holland, then played in Spain and now the Italian league, and I'm still here.
"We will see what happens but I'm happy here."

However, Sneijder suddenly went coy when asked directly about Manchester United's interest - smiling knowingly before calling an end to the interview.

On Saturday, Ferguson reiterated that the club are looking to improve their central midfield options - as he gave youngster Tom Cleverley a chance to impress in the friendly victory over Barcelona.

"It's an area we have to find a solution for," Ferguson noted. "That is why we played Tom Cleverley today. Physically he is not the strongest but he is wiry and has a great idea of the game.

"He is a good footballer and was our best player today. His discipline was terrific. He is a quick passer of the ball. He has good eyes.
"It was a big night for him. He is a big, strong possibility for us to start the season."
yeayyy..this is a BIG booster fo MU

Sir Alex Ferguson admits Dimitar Berbatov could leave Manchester United

The veteran manager has admitted that the Bulgarian international could leave Old Trafford, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly the frontrunners for his signature

Dimitar Berbatov’s future has once again been cast into doubt after Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he could leave Manchester United.

Despite scoring 20 league goals last season for the club, the Bulgarian striker did not even make the bench for the Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley and was reportedly in tears over his exclusion from the squad.
When asked on French TV whether Berbatov could move to Paris Saint-Germain, Sir Alex said smiling: “Yes, he might. That’s possible.”
Reports claim that United could ask for around €23 million for the striker, which would result in a loss of €11.5m on the amount they paid Tottenham three years ago.

But United chief executive David Gill revealed at the weekend that the club are not looking to sell Berbatov.

He said: "Everyone has been talking about Berbatov from the outside, saying he wants to leave or that we want him to leave, but we don't want him to go. We want him to stay. He scored 20 goals last season, so there is no desire on our behalf to see him go."

Berbatov began last season as first-choice striker alongside Wayne Rooney, but soon lost his regular starting role to Javier Hernandez.
PSG have spent big this summer after being taken over by new owners, and recently agreed a €43 million fee for Chelsea target and Palermo midfielder Javier Pastore.
Reports suggested the French giants were looking to bring Inter striker Samuel Eto’o to the club, but they now look to have switched their attentions to Berbatov.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson coy over potential arrival of Wesley Sneijder: We always try to improve but there's nothing concrete yet

The Scot hints at a possible move for the Dutch playmaker and suggests that Edwin van der Sar could return to Old Trafford, potentially as a coach, after taking a year out

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has remained coy on speculation linking Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder with the club.

The Serie A club's CEO Ernesto Paolillo revealed earlier on Wednesday that the Italian outfit would consider any major bids for the Dutch midfielder.

With the signings of David de Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young so far this summer, the Premier League champions have already made successful moves to replace Edwin van der Sar and Gary Neville. Now Sneijder is been touted as a possible replacement for Paul Scholes, though Ferguson has remained tight-lipped on the situation.

"Well, we always try to improve. But at this moment there is nothing concrete," he said.

Ferguson also took the opportunity to praise Van der Sar, suggesting that he should have made a move for the Dutchman earlier in his career.

"He had a great career because of his character," he added. "His level of performance for such a long time is amazing. He is a great human. I was just saying to [Louis] Van Gaal that Van der Sar always had good words during the half-time. When [Peter] Schmeichel left I should have taken him right away. But that was my fault. I'm happy we did after all."

The United boss also added that he would like to see the Dutchman involved with the club in some capacity in the future.

"I think there is a future for him at Man United," the Scot continued. "He will be an ambassador for the club anyway. Now he will take a year off. After that he will make his decision."

'Sometimes he reminds me of myself' - Eric Cantona encourages Manchester United to sign Inter's Wesley Sneijder    The former Red Devil has sung the praises of the Netherlands international, insisting that the 27-year-old attacking midfielder is exactly what the Old Trafford club need

            4 Aug 2011 07:45:00

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has expressed his hope that the club will sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter.

Goal.com revealed exclusively last week that the Dutchman has told Manchester City he would like to join the Red Devils, but the player's wage demands have continued to hold up a deal.

Now the Red Devils' former player has showered praise on the Netherlands international by likening the ex-Real Madrid man to himself.

"Sneijder is one of the best. He will be great for the team," Cantona told The Mirror.

"He is what Manchester United needs. There's no-one like him right now.

"He's strong. Sometimes he reminds me of myself."

Cantona spent five years at Old Trafford between 1992 and 1997, winning four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
