Tevez seeking Man Utd exit since January: Ferguson

Mon 13 Jul, 07:53 PM

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Striker Carlos Tevez had been scheming to leave Manchester United since the beginning of the year, Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson said on Monday.

The 25-year-old Argentina star is expected to be signed up by arch-rivals Manchester City for a rumoured 25 million pound (35 million euros) fee, assuming he passes a medical when he returns from holiday on Tuesday, according to reports in British media. City are to fly to South Africa later this week for a pre-season tour.

Ferguson claims Tevez' behaviour signalled that his loyalty could not be counted on: "I half expected Carlos Tevez would be going a long time back," said the United boss.

"I think he maybe did a deal around January because I spoke to him and gave him an offer on the night we played Inter Milan and he never came back to me,

"I phoned him on holiday and he never got back to me and I texted him twice and he never got back to me then either, so obviously he had made his mind up a long time ago,

"He was a good player and did well for us. But he obviously assessed the situation and wanted to go somewhere else."

The move across town to Eastlands will disappoint Red Devils fans with whom the Argentine has been a favourite over the past two years.

The ex-West Ham, Corinthians and Boca Juniors star has made it clear he is frustrated by the lack of playing time provided with last season by Sir Alex.

Fans hoped some of the cash received at Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo could be used to ensure Tevez remained at United. However, the South American, resisting appeals to stay from chief executive David Gill, has been mulling over the invitation from cash-rich City as well as from Chelsea.

Manchester United Team Of The Decade 2000-2010
As we approach 2010, Goal.com's Matt Monaghan selects his Manchester United best XI from the past decade.
13 Jul 2009 21:53:48

With takeovers and titles galore, the 00s have seen Manchester United cement their position as the leading club in British football.

Under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the stars who brought the glory days back to the club in 1990s were successfully replaced with two batches of players that continued the Scot's winning tradition.

It would be wrong to think all this came easily. A drought after Premier League titles in 00/01 and 02/03 threatened to unravel all this good work as the fallout from Malcolm Glazer’s hostile takeover transferred itself to the pitch in 2005.

Out of the flames, a new leader emerged in Cristiano Ronaldo. Since 06/07, three league titles, league cup, Champions League and Club World Cup have been added to the overflowing Old Trafford trophy cabinet.

The Portuguese’s record breaking move to Real Madrid has forced Ferguson back to the drawing board. But, with his impeccable pedigree, it’d be foolish to bet against a new reign of supremacy beginning in the coming years.

Formation: 4-4-2

Goalkeeper

Edwin Van Der Sar – The giant Dutchman’s belated arrival as replacement for the Great Dane, Peter Schmeichel, in 2005 has been a key factor in the Reds’ re-emergence.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s search for his next No.1 took in over six top level candidates, including French World Cup winning keeper Fabian Barthez. None had the former Ajax man’s spider like physique or ability to remain calm under pressure.

The curtain is now coming down on the 39-year-old's career as mistakes start to creep into his game. But, make no bones about it, a replacement for Van Der Sar will be just as difficult to find.

Defence

Gary Neville – A Red Devil to the core, Neville has lived the dream of any boyhood supporter to wear the captain’s armband.

While injuries and old age have ravaged his recent career, this one club man remains the face of the traditional values of Manchester United.

Away from lifting 19 trophies and baiting Liverpool fans since his debut in 1992, the Bury-born player has also found time to collect 85 England caps.

Nemanja Vidic – Crafted from granite, Nemanja Vidic has pulverised any opposition unlucky enough to come across him in the club’s quest for domestic and European honours.

The reigning Manchester United Player and Player’s Player of the Year’s rock solid partnership with Rio Ferdinand since joining from Spartak Moscow in 2006 has underscored the Red Devil’s march to supremacy.

Quite simply, Vidic has made a mockery of those who say quality January buys are impossible to come across.

Rio Ferdinand – A British transfer fee record-breaker from Leeds United in 2002 who now looks cheap at £29.1 million, Ferdinand is in a class of his own as a centre back.

It’s not always been easy for the West Ham youth product, with a drugs ban and contract stand-off de-railing his career in 2004 and 2005.

The Peckham-born player has since emerged as the lynchpin of a team that has conquered all before it.

Patrice Evra – Few watching Evra’s shaky debut in the Manchester derby in 2006 could have predicted the former Monaco man’s march to becoming the best left back in the business.

The France international’s trademark dashes up the pitch and ability to snaffle the ball from any winger have put paid to those memories.

Dovetailing with Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs, the Senegal-born player can rightly claim to have played a starring role in the Red Devil’s trophy filled recent history.

Midfield

Cristiano Ronaldo – From gangly trick pony, to the world’s most expensive player, Ronaldo’s transformation at Manchester United has been remarkable.

The Portuguese has re-invited the position of winger during the club’s current three consecutive Premier League wins. Without his unprecedented strike rate, all this wouldn’t have been impossible.

CR7 was famously bought in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon after tearing United apart in a friendly.  He now leaves for Real Madrid as FIFA World Player of the Year and a true Red Devils legend.

:pompom:
Roy Keane – While not the omnipotent, no holds-barred force of the 1990s, Roy Keane still managed to leave his mark in the last decade.

In the case of mortal enemy Alf-Inge Haaland, this was literally the case as his knee high tackled ended the Norwegian’s career in 2001.

The former Nottingham Forest player captained United to Premier League titles in 00/01 and 02/03 before a trademark explosion on M.U.T.V closed the door on his time at the club which stretched from 1993-2005.

Honest to the end, Keane has left a powerful legacy which no central midfielder will come close to matching.

Paul Scholes – Whether next to Michael Carrick or Roy Keane, Scholes’ unassuming demeanour and flawless ability on the ball has shined through regardless.

The anti-thesis to the glamour and bravado of the modern footballer, the Oldham-born youth product has made his name on the pitch instead of the tabloids since first appearing in 1994.

When David Beckham joined the ‘Galacticos’ of Real Madrid in 2003, he said Zinedine Zidane, Raul etc all asked him what was it like to train next to a player as good as the 'ginger maestro' every day. That tells you everything you need to know about him.

:pompom:
Ryan Giggs – Sometimes the term ‘legend’ barely suffices to describe the contribution of a player. For Welsh wonder Ryan Giggs, the superlatives need to be piled on liberally before you would come anywhere near to a reflection of his achievements.

While still as sinewy as the day he made his debut in 1991, the trademark speed has left him. A move from flying winger to crafty central midfielder ensued in the 00s.

This hasn’t detracted from his ability, with his award of the current PFA’s Player of the Year trophy saying everything you need to know about the 35-year-old.

Attack

Wayne Rooney – Not many Merseysiders weave their way into the hearts of the Manchester United faithful. Rooney has done this with ease.

A jaw-dropping Euro 2004 prompted a £30m move from Everton. The boyhood Blue’s debut hat trick proved that Sir Alex Ferguson was right to splash the cash.

In tandem with Cristiano Ronaldo, the pair have run rings around the establishment and driven the Reds to success.

The Portuguese’s departure has cleared the way for him to take centre stage at the Theatre of Dreams. Don’t expect him to pass on the opportunity.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy – ‘Van the Man’s’ ability to find the back of the net was unprecedented in the recent history of the club.

After finalising his abortive move from PSV Eindhoven in 2001, 220 appearances generated an astonishing 150 goals. With statistics like that, it’s hard to see why the Dutchman was so unceremoniously dumped in 2006.

Only one Premier League trophy was secured in his time at the club, and a mutual parting of the ways to Real Madrid saw both parties come out of their separation in glory.

Van Der Sar

  Neville - Vidic – Ferdinand - Evra

Ronaldo - Keane – Scholes - Giggs

Rooney – Van Nistelrooy

Ferguson vows to spend wisely

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he will not be "stupid" with the £80 million he received for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some Manchester United fans are bound to be alarmed and disappointed in equal measure that Ferguson has declared his summer transfer business over, even though he has only signed three players, the most notable being Michael Owen, who has arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer.

The Glazer family have already insisted Ferguson will get whatever cash he feels is required to strengthen a squad that next season will bid for an unprecedented fourth straight league title, as well as a place in the Champions League final for the third year in a row.

Ferguson did little to counter that stance, hinting that the decision not to invest the type of huge sums that have been spent by Real Madrid come from his own desire not to waste money in a massively inflated transfer market.

"I can only placate the fans this way and say I am not going to be stupid," he said.

"We have got that wonderful sum of money from Real Madrid but there was no way we were going to throw it away and put an extra nought on the end of the transfer which I didn't think was value."

The case of Karim Benzema was a case in point.

With Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez both heading for the exit door, Benzema was top of Ferguson's wish-list.

At 21, and with Champions League experience already under his belt at Lyon, Benzema would have fitted perfectly into Ferguson's grand plan.

The initial overtures from Old Trafford received a positive response. Then Real Madrid made their move, taking the fee way beyond £30million, to a sum Ferguson felt was unreasonable.

"People have to try and put their own value on players," said Ferguson.

"Lyon may think we under-valued him and that is fine but they have done well to get 32million euros."

The problem for United is that Real's pot of money appears limitless.

In addition to Ronaldo and Benzema, the Madrid outfit have also splashed out in excess of £55million on Kaka and have not yet ruled out the possibility of signing Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich.

"They did the same some years ago, with Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo," reflected Ferguson.

"It is in their nature to do these things. It is the way they operate.

"They are not nearly as afraid of debt as anyone else in the world so that is a big plus for them.

"You have to applaud the system they have for controlling the debt, whether it is the bank or whatever it is. They are still able to do it and it puts them in a fantastic position. It is different from us and different from other clubs."

Yet Ferguson declares himself happy with the way United operate and rejects the theory that Real will be the Red Devils' major European challengers this year, preferring instead to stick with Barcelona, who defeated his own side in such a disappointingly one-sided affair in Rome two months ago.

Manchester City will be rivals only on the domestic front. But Ferguson concedes the extraordinary events at Eastlands, coupled with those at Madrid, have changed football's landscape considerably, further fuelling a market many felt had previously reached its highest level.

"I said that a year ago after the takeover at City that they could affect the market," he said.

"There is some indication that is the case.

"Other values throughout the world, not just in England, are amazing. Some of the numbers being tossed about are sky high.

"For some reason it seems to have caught fire this summer and it has been very difficult to get value."

However, anyone believing United will not be competitive should be wary.

In making his bold statement about no more signings, Ferguson has assessed the players at his disposal and decided the likes of Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda have the ability to make an impact at the highest level.

"There is no need for any knee-jerk reactions," he said.

"We have a good squad and we are still going to be very strong next year."

Former England captain David Beckham would consider a return to the Premier League to boost his chances of playing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, said he would never turn out for another English side when he left Manchester United in 2003.

But in a U-turn, he stated: "Never say never. I would definitely consider it.

"When I left my heart was in Manchester - I couldn't see myself playing against United. Now I wouldn't rule it out."

Beckham has a five-year Major League Soccer contract, which began in 2007 and allows for him to spend the off-season on loan at a European club.

He has only recently returned to the United States following a five-month spell with AC Milan.

His interest in a return to England is likely to spark rumours of a move to Chelsea this winter after he impressed new Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was Milan coach during the player's time in Italy.

However, a return to Serie A seems the more likely move.

"Obviously, Milan expressed that they want me to go back, so I don't see any reason why that would change," added Beckham, who left Old Trafford to join Real Madrid.

"We'll have to wait and see. I hope to be going back there."

And Beckham, who is England's most capped outfield player with 112 appearances, has reiterated his desire to see out his Major League Soccer contract.

"I intend to stay until the end of my contract and maybe further," he confirmed.

"I've always said that. I've always said, even when I went to Milan, that I'm committed to the Galaxy and to MLS, and that hasn't changed."

Beckham is currently trying to mend relationships with players and fans in Los Angeles that soured after he opted to stay in Italy rather than return to the US for the start of the MSL season.

His Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan suggested Beckham had shown a lack of commitment and that his level of dedication to the club had waned since his arrival in July 2007.

The duo met, along with manager Bruce Arena, when Galaxy training resumed on Monday, and Beckham said: "I'm not going to talk about what was said. That was between me, Landon and the manager but we had a good talk."

Donovan too is keen to put recent events behind him, adding: "We're getting past it, we're moving on.

"There's a lot of things I regret. I regret the way that I went about this process and I also regret some of the things I said.

"Some good will come out of it. I really believe that. I believe we're getting to the bottom of things we needed to."
