Sequel of cult film Attack the Gas Station

A sequel of the 1999 comedy Attack the Gas Station (Jooyooso Seubgyeoksageon) is planned to enter cinemas in its tenth anniversary year. Like the original, the sequel will also be in the hands of director KIM Sang-jin. It was announced that the scenario is halfway finished. Actors have not been cast yet.

Attack the Gas Stationchronicles the take over of a gas station by a young group of society's outsiders. Its cast included LEE Sung-jae (Daisy), KIM Su-ro (Vampire Cop Ricky) and LEE Yo-won (May 18/Hwaryohan Hyooga).

KIM also directed the comedies Kick the Moon (Silla-uiDalbab) and Ghost House (Gwisini Sanda). KIM started out as a assistant director on KANG Woo-suk's classic comedy Two Cops.

SO Ji-sub debuts on the silver screen

Popular actor SO Ji-sub stars alongside KANG Ji-hwan in director JANG Hoon's Rough Cut.

SO is known as a charismatic on-screen presence. He effortlessly takes the leap from the small screen to dominate the big screen.

SO plays a troubled hard-boiled gangster with a love for cinema. He is a fan of KANG's character, a star actor who specialises in violent gangster roles. While KANG also behaves tough and arrogant like a gang leader in real life, SO used to have a dream of becoming an actor. From the moment the two meet, there is tension in the air and a rivalry is born.

SO rose to stardom throughout Asia with leading roles in popular Korean dramas I'm Sorry, I Love You and What Happened in Bali. The distribution rights of Rough Cut is already pre-sold to Japan.

Director JANG has ties to Korea's maverick director KIM Ki-duk. KIM wrote and produced the film. KIM surprises with plenty of jokes, but the scenario is at the same time unmistakeably by the hands of KIM which will be a recommendation for some, but distance others. Ironically, KIM's successful humoristic inclusions unbalance the tough male oriented violence. Rough Cut hits Korean cinemas on September 11.

Seo Tai-ji to Perform With Royal Philharmonic

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Singer Seo Tai-ji, left, and maestro Tolga Kashif appear at a news conference Friday
at Deoksu Palace in Seoul to promote their joint concert Sept. 27./ Yonhap

Korean top singer Seo Tai-ji will be back on stage after his successful rock festival, but this time with a more classical crowd. The "Culture President,'' as many call him, will hold a special concert with maestro Tolga Kashif and the celebrated Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Sept. 27.

The press conference for ``The Great 2008 Seotaiji Symphony with Tolga Kashif & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'' already made headlines for being held at Deoksu Palace, the first time for a local singer.

Hoards of fans waited in the sizzling sun Friday for the singer and the maestro, many screaming as the two artists arrived at the venue, right in front of one of the palace's buildings.

"I always wanted to work with a celebrated arranger and an orchestra. I was a big fan of Kashif for a long time and it was me who contacted him first for this special concert,'' Seo said.

Kashif is a celebrated musical conductor, composer and arranger who has worked with some of the most famous stars in the world, including David Bowie, Elton John and U2. The maestro also arranged the ``Queen Symphony'' based on the celebrated band's music.

"I love Seo. Music is for the heart and his music hit my heart. He has a great talent in making melodies and not many artists can (do that). I was attracted to his wonderful and strong melodies and it's a great honor to be here,'' Kashif said.

The concert will offer Seo's well-known songs blended into classical tunes played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kashif offered some songs he and Seo have been working on for the past couple of months after the Q & A session, and received a hearty applause from fans. The crowd screamed and clapped as the maestro played the familiar melodies of Seo's songs.

"I like to improvise, although it's quite scary (to do so). I try not to make it too obvious. It's nice to find other textures in music,'' he said after the short performance.

"At the end of the day its very simple as long as music is enjoyable. We will offer the full palette of the orchestra and a truthful rendition of songs. I really hope you enjoy our concert. We have got something very special to offer to you together. It will be something quite different,'' he added.

"The Great 2008 Seotaiji Symphony with Tolga Kashif & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'' will be held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium Sept. 27. For more information visit www.stjsymphony.com .

Foreign Movie Studios Shut Down Operations

By Kim Tong-hyung
Staff Reporter

The recent buzz in theaters is "Batman: The Dark Knight," but Kim Seong-gyu, a self-proclaimed movie buff, isn抰 bothering to get a ticket. Kim saw the movie twice before it opened in Korean cinemas last month.

"I downloaded it on an Internet peer-to-peer site," said Kim, a 31-year-old office worker.

"I think the picture quality could have been better but you can't complain too much if you aren't paying for it," he said.

It is often said that Koreans, regarded as one of the most tech-savvy people in the world, live two or three years ahead of everyone else. However, the movie industry is certainly hoping that the country isn抰 representative of the future of film distribution.

According to industry sources, Sony Pictures, which became the first foreign movie studio to enter the Korean DVD market in 1999 by releasing "Fly Away From Home," is closing its domestic unit this month after enduring a decade of sluggish sales.

Sony was the last among major movie studios to grind it out in the difficult Korean market. Paramount, Universal, Buena Vista and 20th Century Fox packed their bags in 2006 and last year.

"Officials from our U.S. headquarters will visit Seoul soon to handle the withdrawal process," said a representative of Sony Pictures Korea.

Selling DVD products is a challenge in a country with one of the highest broadband penetration rates on Earth. According to a survey by the Korean Film Council, 47.3 percent of respondents said they have downloaded movies from the Internet at least once. The number doesn抰 include Internet users who paid for accessing unauthorized clips.

"If we count those who paid 100 won or more for pirated clips, the rate for illegal downloads would be closer to 70 percent," said Kim Jong-ho, an official from the film council.

The Korean market for DVD products and video is expected to be around 328 billion won ($289 million) this year, half of the 773 billion won in 2002.

The mighty Internet is also killing video stores, once ubiquitous in any Korean city but now becoming an endangered species.

The country had more than 10,000 video rental outlets in 2001, but had just 3,500 at the end of last year. The number of "video rooms," where customers pay to watch a video or DVD title, stood at 800 last year, down from 2,400 in 2001.

Although Internet piracy is more of a concern, movie studios are frustrated about the private DVD copies sold on the streets. Street vendors camped in front of subway stations selling three to four private copies for a single 10,000 won bill are almost part of the landscape. In the film council抯 survey, 8.1 percent of respondents said they have bought pirated DVD copies on the streets at least once.

Chungeorahm sets up "29 Years"
Company behind megahit "THe Host" unveil new project

Written by Han Sunhee

SEOUL - Chungeorahm, the Korean shingle responsible for mega hit "The Host," has unveiled actioner "29 Years" as its next big budget production.

Like "The Host" which was full of veiled social criticism, "29 Years" is certain to be contentious in Korea.

Based on a popular comic strip serialized online by cartoonist Kang Full ("A.P.T."), pic probes the Gwangju Massacre, a real life incident in 1980 when troops opened fire on civilians in the city and killed thousands.

Story follows a former soldier who, in order to assuage his guilty conscience 29 years later, sets out to assassinate the person who ordered the massacre. Former Korean president Chun Doo-hwan is widely suspected to have given the order and the film makes a fictionalized Chun the assassin's target.

Scripted and to be helmed by Lee Hae-young, pic is to be produced by Chungeorahm on a $6.5 million budget, with lensing beginning this month and delivery skedded for April 2009.

Chungeorahm has assembled an ensemble cast led by Kim A-jung ("200 Pounds Beauty") and Ryoo Seung-bum ("Bloody Tie") and also stars Byun Hee-bong ("The Host",) Jin Goo ("Epitaph") and Chun Ho-jin ("G.P.506".) Chungeorahm is retaining local distribution rights and has not yet fixed int'l sales representation.
