Jeon Do-yeon, Ha Jung-woo as Ex-Lovers
By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

Actress Jeon Do-yeon, left, and Ha Jung-woo who star in "My Dear Enemy,''
talk to reporters during a press conference in Seoul, Tuesday. / Yonhap
South Korea's most in-demand actors Jeon Do-yeon and Ha Jung-woo generated a big media buzz appearing before the press as "former lovers." Jeon, who won the 2007 Cannes Best Actress award for "Secret Sunshine," and Ha, hero of one of this year's highest grossing films "The Chaser," teamed up in "My Dear Enemy," due in theaters Sept. 25.
Popular band Clazziquai's vocalist Horan opened the event, singing mellow tunes that appear in the fall lineup's most anticipated film. Director Lee Yoon-ki, the melodrama craftsman of critically acclaimed works like "This Charming Girl" (2006), brings what he calls an unconventional, post-breakup love story.
Jeon appears as Heui-su, an uptight, unemployed single woman in her mid-30s. Broke and desperate, she suddenly recalls that her ex-boyfriend Byeong-u, owes her 3.5 million won (about $3,500). She finds him gambling at a horseracing track and demands reimbursement. Reunited after one year, the two spend "one fine day" (the Korean title of the film) together, with Heui-su driving Byeong-u to one lady friend after another to borrow money.
About her post-Cannes appearance, Jeon admitted feeling pressured but denied rumors that she was offered innumerable opportunities here and abroad. "I was speaking with ("Secret Sunshine" co-star) Song Kang-ho about how it's hard enough to act in Korean, let alone a foreign language,'' she said. "I chose the script because it was well written, and I adore love stories. But this is an unconventional romance and gives off a unique color."
Unlike the dramatic emotional tension that mark both of the stars' previous works, "My Dear Enemy" takes place over one rather uneventful day, and subtle emotions and chemistry between the actors propel the narrative.
About working opposite the reputed actress, Ha said Jeon quieted his nervousness with her easy manner. The two had actually appeared together three years ago in the hit drama "Lovers of Prague," where Ha played a supporting role as the heroine's bodyguard.
"I can't believe that I have risen to play opposite Jeon in such a short time frame," he said. "While playing her bodyguard in the drama, there were many scenes where I was chauffeuring for her. I remember one particular scene where she was crying, and I was so moved I almost shed tears. Jeon is a great actress who inspires those around her even before the audience." He joked about being rather disappointed there was no love scene.
Jeon said that she was the one who was grateful in the partnership. "I didn't know we'd be cast together because of our age difference, but Jung-woo was able to come far because he was already a good actor back then," she said. Jeon, 35, looked younger than ever in her smoky eye makeup. The film clips showed how she looked even more youthful than Ha, who is five years her junior. Her secret to looking more beautiful by the day? "It's inborn. Just kidding. It's the make-up," she said with a grin.
She continued, "Jung-woo is a very versatile actor and really supported me." Ha, complimented by Martin Scorsese as having as much potential as Leonardo Dicaprio and Matt Damon, has a knack for pulling off colorful characters, from a psychopathic serial killer to a suave bar host in "The Moonlight of Seoul." When asked if the latter character, a playboy who swindles women, might be a repetition for his upcoming film, he said, no.
"While it's true that both characters are very sleazy, 'The Moonlight of Seoul' is a bitter, dark night story while my character in 'My Dear Enemy,' energized by the sun, is cheerful and optimistic despite his recklessness," he said.
"My Dear Enemy" is slated for release Sept. 25. Distributed by Lotte Entertainment.

Organized by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) and Seoul Metropolitan Government, the festival gathers 20 pop stars from 12 countries including Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines on one stage.
The festival kicks off with a free concert featuring ``Best New Asian Artists'' Oct. 3 at the Peace Plaza at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. On Oct. 4, big-name pop stars TVXQ, Fahrenheit and w-inds will perform at the main concert of the Asia Song Festival. It will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the World Cup Stadium.
TVXQ is once again Korea's representative at the Asia Song Festival, having performed in three of the last four festivals. The five-member group, whose popularity is soaring around Asia, is preparing for the release of their fourth album this fall.
Fahrenheit is one of the hottest boy bands from Taiwan. The group, composed of Wu Chun, Jiro Wang, Calvin Chen and Aaron Yan, has had two chart-topping albums since 2006. Fahrenheit members, especially Chun, are extremely popular around Asia for their roles in Taiwanese dramas such as ``KO One," ``Romantic Princess,'' ``Hana Kimi'' and ``Tokyo Juliet.''
W-inds is one of the most popular J-pop groups around Asia, having performed in Taipei, Shanghai and Beijing. Members Ryohei Chiba, Keita Tachibana and Ryuichi Ogata visited Seoul in 2006, after being invited to perform at the Mnet KM Music Festival awards show.
Other performers at the festival include Korean girl group Girls Generation, Hong Kong star Karen Mok, Anson Hu from China, Agnes Monica from Indonesia, Ho Quynh Huong from Vietnam, Ice from Thailand and Rivermaya from the Philippines.
"This event will grow into one brand that represents cultural exchange and cooperation within Asia in the near future. The Asia Song Festival is perfect for fostering stronger global competitiveness in the music industry," said Shin Hyun-taik, chairman of KOFICE.
Organizers expect 10,000 people from other countries to attend the concert, up from 4,000 last year.
Aside from the two concerts, there will be an Asia Music Industry Leaders Forum with top Asian music and entertainment executives at the Seoul Hyatt Hotel. There is also an Asian Pop Music Outdoor Showcase Oct. 3-5 at the Peace Plaza.
The Asia Song Festival has been steadily gaining interest since it started in 2003. Past performers included top Asian stars such as BoA, F4, Ayumi Hamasaki, Kelly Chen, Leon Lai, A-Mei, and Arashi.
People wishing to attend can download ticket vouchers from the festival homepage www.asf.or.kr (Korean only). The voucher will be exchanged for an actual ticket on the day of the concert, with picture ID verification.

Rain Produces Special Comeback Show with MBC

Singer Rain will take part in producing a special program with MBC to celebrate his return to the K-pop scene. Rain plans to release his much-anticipated special album in October.
The special program featuring Rain is expected to be similar to Seo Taiji's comeback special which was broadcast earlier this month.
The program will last for one hour and will feature live performances and interviews. MBC is currently negotiating with Rain's management agency JTune Entertainment to air the show sometime in October.
Following his performance during the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Rain told Yeonhap News Agency during a phone interview that he is confident about his new album.
Rain, who produced the album himself, said it took a long time for him to prepare and record the album, which is in its final stage of production. The singer added that the special album includes many of the songs he wrote himself and that some of them are in English.
The album will be released all over Asia as well as other countries with a sizeable Asian K-pop market. Rain plans to release a wordwide album early next year following the release of "Ninja Assassin," a Hollywood blockbuster film starring Rain.

"My Boss, My Lady" Tastes Pre-Broadcast Success

The cable station, OCN, has sold the viewing rights for the comical 6-part drama "My Boss, My Lady" to Japan before its first broadcast in Korea.
It was revealed that OCN sold all the viewing rights to "Across," a Japanese drama distribution company, including TV broadcasting and VOD rights. "This is the first time that a cable TV-produced drama has ever been exported overseas before it has gone on-air," said an OCN representative.
Starring Park Ye-jin, Jung Si-ah and Kim Mi-ryeo, "My Boss, My Lady" is a female version of the movie "My Boss, My Hero," and the first episode is set to air on September 19th.
"'My Boss, My Hero' was adapted into a Japanese version by Japan's NTV, and it received a great deal of interest," said Across. They added that they were looking forward to an equally enthusiastic response for "My Boss, My Lady."

Stress Drives TV Writer to Suicide
By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter
An assistant TV show writer was found dead Thursday morning in an apparent suicide, having fallen from the top of her network's building.
The woman, identified only as Kim, was found dead around 2:30 a.m. at SBS headquarters in Mok-dong, western Seoul. Police questioned witnesses and concluded that the woman threw herself from the rooftop.
Kim, 23, worked on the SBS hit reality TV show "SOS 24," which explores domestic and other forms of violence nationwide. She had worked on the show for two months.
Police said severe stress probably drove her to suicide. Since she was the newest member of the team, she experienced many trials and errors that gave her extreme stress right before the show aired, a police officer said.
On the day of her death, Kim stayed late to finish her job, a lifestyle she had long followed, her coworkers said.
Her relatives said she often cried because of her situation and excessive workload. She reportedly called her sister to tell how frustrating her work was right before her death.
Industry sources acknowledge that assistant TV show writers are paid poorly. "Someone with little work experience normally gets paid 600,000-700,000 won ($600-700) a month. After deducting fees for mobile phone use and transportation, one can hardly make a living," said one insider, who declined to identify herself.
"You also hardly get a day off. Even when you do, people keep calling you for something. When you get more experience and people acknowledge your work, then you get paid well and earn respect for your position, but until then, everything is quite hard."

Chungmuro International Film Festival
Organizers Open Door to Exchanging Cinematic Cultures
By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

A scene from 揔oma擺/color]
Organizers Open the Door to Exchanging Cinematic Cultures
Korea has seen a line of interesting film festivals and the home of Korean cinema, Chungmuro, is bringing yet another one next month. The 2nd Chungmuro International Film Festival in Seoul (CHIFFS) will celebrate retro to recent films from Sept. 3 to 9.
CHIFFS will show fans what Chungmuro was built for: a strong backbone for the local cinema industry, the venue of communication between the old and young and the door to exchanging cinematic cultures with others. This year, CHIFFS will offer some 170 films from more than 40 countries, categorized into 11 different sections.

The first Chungmuro festival was held under three themes ― Discover, Restoration and Creation _ and these will be used again this year, but with more depth and insight. If last year's event set up the basic structure of the event, this year will further expand these concepts. New sections have been added to intensify the three themes while others have been developed to bring a more interesting approach: the International Competition to "discover" hidden cinematic treasures and the CHIFFS Masters where fans can look into the life and work of celebrated cinematic figures.
The Official Selection is the trademark section of CHIFFS, offering classic black and white movies along with hidden gems. With various sub-sections including Restored and New Prints, The Centenary of David Lean and A Tribute to Deborah Kerr, this part of the festival will bring the basic concept of the whole festival to the audience ― appreciating the past, discovering the new and restoring the valuable.

The International Competition section is a new feature. A group of judges, led by Michael Cimino ("The Deer Hunter," 1978), will choose the film that holds the chance to become a new classic. Films from Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, Russia and Thailand will compete.
Another not-to-miss section is the CHIFFS Masters. The main goal of this is to introduce filmmakers or cinematic artists who have dedicated their life to films and present their works to local fans. This year's master is Douglas Trumbull, a leading special effects supervisor whose works include "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979) and "Blade Runner" (1983). A special screening of "2001: A Space Odyssey" will guide visitors to the fascinating works of the special effects master. Trumbull himself will also appear at a master class to share some of his secrets with fans. He was nominated for an Academy Awards five times and received a lifetime achievement Oscar for his optical and digital effects expertise.
CHIFFS will explore the film history and industry of Germany this year with "Mapping German Film History: Expression to Cinematic Journey." With the help of the Goethe Institute, visitors can journey their way through the distinctive spectrum of German cinema. A total of 40 movies will be presented dating back to the 1920s when expressionism reigned the art world with silent movies such as "Nosferatu" (1922) and "Blue Angel" (1930) to more recent works like "Into Great Silence" (2005) and "Yella" (2007).
The international cinema scene cannot be defined without the outstanding works and dedication of Asian directors and artists, so it is natural for the CHIFFS to hold a special section that "rediscovers" Asian cinema. Don't miss the "Rediscovering Asian Cinema: Auteur and Genre" which will focus on the life of the late Japanese director Kon Ichikawa as this year's auteur and this year's genre, thriller. Nine works including "The Inugami Family" (1976), "Doraheita" (2000) and a documentary of the filmmaker's life will be screened, while hit thrillers such as Yo#aro Nomura's "The Castle of Sand" (1974), Max Makowski's "One Last Dance'' and Chang Yoon-hyun's "Tell Me Something" (1999) will offer an exhilarating experience.
The Chungmuro Now section will work as the playground for up and coming Korean directors who hold the heavy, yet meaningful, responsibility of the future of Korean cinema. A total of nine short films will offer a breath of fresh air with the filmmakers' experimental and intriguing ideas and expressions.

Also included in the festival are the Silent Film Feast, where visitors can watch silent films that made history; the Memories of Korean Cinema #8, which will introduce old Korean films; and a special homage section for Korean director Jang Sun-woo.
The block between Myungbo Arts Center and the former Maeil Business Newspaper will be full of interesting programs and events with the Chungmuro Nanjang Fun Fair being held Sept. 7. A movie costume competition will allow guests to rediscover the child inside them and dress as one of their favorite characters, while street performances will heighten the excitement with nonverbal performances and mime acts. Share love at the CHIFFS Auction where stars will sell personal items and donate the proceeds to an organization for needy children.
Programmer抯 Choice of CHIFFS
The organizers of the CHIFFS have recommended several films ― some too famous to miss and others comical, mind striking and nostalgic.

Hidden Fortress: The Last Princess (2008): The opening film of CHIFFS will be Japanese director Shinji Higuchi's ``Hidden Fortress: The Last Princess.'' Based on the 1958 version directed by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, this film has blended in a more modern touch and genres with the classic story of a young girl. The original movie by Kurosawa is known to have influenced director George Lucas with its incisive action scenes and humor.

Love Me Once Again (1968): Directed by Jeong So-young, this black and white film is one of the most famous works in Korean cinema history. Drawing more than 360,000 viewers at a time when Seoul's population stood at four million, this film represents Korean romantic cinematic artistry.

Good Bye Lenin! (2003): A comical yet touching story of a young boy who has to live a lie, this work became a big hit in Germany with more than seven million viewers. Afraid that his mother will suffer yet another fatal heart attack, young Alexander manages to pretend that the Berlin Wall has not fallen and that they are still living in the same time and space of East Germany.
The films will be screened in various venues, including the Daehan Theater, Myungbo Arts Center and the National Theater of Korea. Tickets vary depending on the event and range from no charge to 10,000 won. For more specific information, visit www.chiffs.kr or call (02) 2267-0110.

'Modern Boy' paints a colorful story
Director Jung Ji-woo's historical drama "Modern Boy" promises to be a real highlight of this year's film calendar.
Set in 1937 Gyeongseong (old Seoul) when Korea was under Japanese occupation, it follows the story of Lee Hae-myung (played by Park Hae-il), a Korean civil servant with an extravagant lifestyle and a dress sense to match. As a self-proclaimed romanticist, his liberal approach to life defies the oppression and economic depression of the time, hence the film's title.

However, all is changed as he falls in love with the enchanting Cho Nan-sil (Kim Hye-soo), a mysterious bar-performer who proves to be a lot more than meets the eye. Lee Hae-myung suddenly finds that he is pit against the grand forces of history in a fight for his love. On his choice of setting, director Jung Ji-woo said that "it was an era wrought with economic trouble but still incredibly rich in culture, I thought it would provide a great setting for a movie," in the opening press conference at Apgujeong CGV on Wednesday.
"Modern Boy" stays true to the sageuk genre (Korean historical drama) with characteristic emphasis on its setting, recreating the intricate details of 1930s Gyeongseong from scratch. From suspended paper streetlights to historical sites like the Gyeongseong station and Sungnyemun, no expenses were spared in bringing the period to life in full color. This attention to detail is bound to mesmerize the audience with the depiction of a vibrant, passionate Gyeongseong, a place that lingers in the history books only through black and white photos as a difficult period of Korean history.
Two years in the making, Jung was full of pride for his film and praise for his actors. He said they were "a pleasure to work with" and that "the film will be worth seeing for their captivating performances alone."
Due for release on Oct. 2, "Modern Boy" looks to set the screens alight with all the color and passion of autumn.

The film gained more publicity when a cameo of director BONG Joon-ho (The Host) became known. BONG appears as an office worker who takes English classes at a language institute together with KONG's character.
KONG Hyo-jin is currently in cinemas with RYU Seung-wan's parody Dachiwama Lee. She broke through with supporting roles in the youngster films Volcano High and Conduct Zero. She also starred in LEE Myung-se's M.
