Villa's Angel 'free to leave' for New York Red Bulls

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has told striker Juan Pablo Angel he 'will not stand in his way' if he has the chance to play in Major League Soccer in America.

Angel is understood to be on the verge of agreeing a two-year contract with New York Red Bulls.

It will mean the end of Angel's six-year stay at Villa in which he became the club's record signing at

Newcastle leading the race for Sidwell

Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell looks likely to leave the club in the summer and head north to join Glenn Roeder's Newcastle, after Reading manager Steve Coppell insisted that he could do nothing to keep the player.

Coppell told the Daily Express: 'Realistically we have to say he will almost definitely go. Given the fact he is playing so well at the moment people are going to be looking at him.

'We live in hope and keep knocking at the door, but it is an exciting time for Steve and I'm sure a lot of clubs would love to sign him.'

The former Arsenal trainee has been in excellent form for Reading this season, but was dropped for the weekend's game against Fulham, sparking renewed speculation over his future.

Sidwell's contract ends in the summer and there are a host of clubs keen to sign him if he becomes a free agent.

Although Aston Villa, Everton, Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Spurs have all been monitoring the situation, the Guardian claims that preliminary talks have already been held with Newcastle and that Sidwell favours a move to the north-east.

Coleman left devastated by Fulham sacking

Chris Coleman has admitted he was devastated by his sacking by Fulham, but bears the club no ill will and is determined to return to top-level management.

The Welshman had been at the club for a decade as a player, coach and manager, but his tenure came to an end earlier this month following a poor run.

Coleman admits his departure came as a bolt from the blue, but he does not harbour a grudge and is looking for The Cottagers to avoid the drop.

'I am devastated to be honest,' Coleman told Sky Sports. 'I had been at the club 10 years and I never really saw it coming, but they have got their decisions to make and their reasons and I am devastated.

'Being somewhere for 10 years I know a lot of people at Fulham and I would be devastated if they went out of the league.

'I don't want to see them go out, I know the players in the dressing room and they are strong guys and that is what will see them through.'

Coleman is set to take some time out before making a return to management.

'I will spend a little bit more time with my four children, I will spend some quality time with them,' he added.

'I will enjoy a little break to make sure that when I do come back the batteries are recharged.'

Record-breaker James 'best in the business'

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp hailed David James as 'the best keeper in the business' after he made history during the goalless Barclays Premiership draw at Aston Villa.

James set a new record for Premiership clean sheets - 142 - by shutting out Martin O'Neill's side with a string of superb saves.

It enabled the 36-year-old to surpass the previous record, which was held by Arsenal and England keeper David Seaman.
