When told that the viewing public considers her now as a big star, Kristine Hermosa demurs, almost with a tinge of bashfulness.
Her modesty cannot hide the fact that, to her fans and her home network, ABS-CBN, Kristine has really stepped into the big league of star celebrities.
Among the current batch of young stars gracing local TV, Kristine stands out as having one of the loveliest faces, if not the loveliest.
One avid fan even commented: "She is so pretty, you can't see any meanness in that kind of face."
Kristine is often complimented for her flawless skin. She says it could be from her genes, since she has no beauty secret.
"The best beauty enhancer, think, is eight hours of sleep," she says. "I often don't have the luxury of time to do that, but am really blessed with good skin. I don't apply anything
and just make do with simple soap and water."
When away from the cameras and lights, she makes do with a little powder and lipstick. "I remove my makeup as soon as I am through with my work."
When Kristine is off from work, she loves to spoil herself in a spa for a good massage.
She claims she is no fitness buff."I don't know why I look fit when I don't exercise at all. I feel really blessed that I don't gain weight, to think that I have quite a hearty appetite.
Hindi ako mapili sa pagkain."
But she has plans of enrolling in a Flamenggo class or to play badminton when her time is not too tight.
Bankable star
That lovely face, plus her drive to excel in acting, launched Kristine on the high road to stardom, rising to the top from the cream of hopeful kids who formed the cast of afternoon
ABS-CBN program Ang TV nine years ago. She was only 12 at the time.
To date, Kristine has starred in two hit soap operas, where she was both times paired with Jericho Rosales. Pangako Sa'Yo aired for two years and Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas has just ended its run. Both soaps survived longer than most other series on prime time TV.
She also headlined the movie All My Life opposite Aga Muhlach.
That's not all, Kristine is also a favorite endorser of commercial products.
Bankable as she is, Kristine, 20, is finding herself swamped with workload. "I don't think I lead a normal life," she tells MIRROR. "I hardly have time for my family, friends and even for
myself. But I have no regrets. Lahat ng bagay ay may kapalit.
"Also, I have no prvacy. Di ko na magawa ang ginagawa ko before, kagaya ng simpleng paglalakad sa kalye.
"I should have been in school, too. I tried not only once to enroll at ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center. But I end up quitting after a while because the work is just so overwhelming. I still hope to be able to set aside time for my studies. Hindi ako makatapos. I plan to take the Department of Education's PEP evaluation exam to find out what level I can fit in."
Kristine acknowledges there are other perks that a celebrity enjoys, aside from the fat pay check which draws many people into the field.
"There are invitations to grace social events and sometimes you get a lot of gift checks as presents. And then there are small, simple joys like, when entering a residential subdivision, di na kinukuha ang ID ko. Nakakatuwa naman. Or when queuing for something, pinapauna ka nila.
"When I have free time, I like to drive around and I find that the traffic cops tend to be lenient. But that's not to say I take advantage of the situation t abuse the rules. Once or twice lang, when I got stuck in traffic and the cut-off time fo the color-coding scheme kicked in, they didn't reprimand me.
"I enjoy being a celebrity, but there are times na gusto ko rin ng normal na buhay. Yun bang makakapunta ka sa palengke. I find that so difficult to do now. Two years ago, I went to Nepa Q-Mart. Nakatawad naman ako and the sales girl even gave me a present.
"If I am not in this kind of job, I definitely would have more time for myself and my family. The work is quite demanding. We tape three times a week and, if we are rushing, we tape everyday. It's hectic."
Kristine says that, her hectic schedule aside, she is basically the same person that her childhood friends have known. "The only thing that changed in me is the fact that I am busier now than before. But the essence of my person is the same as when I was just starting in this business.
"I am still a sincere person, or I'd like to think so. Ayaw ko yung makikipagplastikan. I don't fake my emotions. What you see is what you get."
In spite of the hectic schedule, Kristine says her work as a whole is "enjoyable and not at all boring. Acting is very challenging. i try to study the character I am going to play. Once I am able to internalize that, I know 95 percent how to play the role. Gusto ko natural ang dating, hindi aral ng aral. I sometimes resort to adlibs basta the essence is the same."
Time for herself
Aside from going to the spa, her other favorite day-off activities include going shopping or going to some beach or on an out-of-town trip. Often she does these with her family or her friends outside of show business.
Kristine splurges on clothes, shoes, jewelry. She is starting to invest, too. At the moment she is building her own house at Loyola Grand Villa.
She says she wants to stay in show business as long as possible. "But at the moment my job is very demanding. It can burn me out if I am not careful. there are days when I want to just enter a cocoon and reflect on myself.
"I perform reality checks every now and then, especially when i feel I don't know myself anymore. Often, my family and my friends help give me the reality check.
"There are also periods when I feel I need to go to church for meditation and reflection. I make time for it even if I am busy, as often as my tight schedule permits me to do so."
Asked about rumors that she plans to migrate to Canada, Kristine says she is not about to leave the country and her work. "Not now," she says. "My family is going, but I am staying put with my sister. I will only go there for vacations.
"At some time in the future, when I am financially ready, I may choose not to be as active in show business. I dream of going back to school to study, grow my own business, perhaps, and I want to have my own family and lead a private life."
