P1’s hop, skip and jump
By JO TIMBUONG
KUALA LUMPUR: Early adopters of WiMAX are already enjoying the wireless broadband service in the Klang Valley, while the rest of the population will have to wait till Aug 19 before they can sign up.
In the meantime, WiMAX provider Packet One Networks (P1) is playing its cards close to the chest. It refuses to divulge at this time how much its service will be priced at and what web-access speeds subscribers will be offered.
“You’ll have to be patient and wait till Aug 19, to find out,” said Michael Lai, CEO of P1.
Since early this month, selected residents in the Kuala Lumpur city centre and Bukit Bintang, Pekeliling, Setapak, Gombak, Seri Rampai, Sentul, Pudu, and parts of Subang Jaya have been using the P1 service, called P1 W1MAX.
P1 intends to hold an event on Aug 19 to announce the prices and speeds.
“And if people are happy with those, they can sign up on-the-spot as pioneer users,” said Lai.
Pioneer users will enjoy benefits that will be exclusive to them, in return for providing us with feedback on their experiences with our service,” said Kenny Wong, P1 chief marketing officer. But he declined to reveal what exactly the specials would be.
Also, he would only say that WiMAX service prices would be competitive, compared to what is being offered now by other broadband service providers. Prices for these range between RM60 and RM160 per month now for speeds that range from 384Kbps to 4Mbps.
There will be various packages to suit the different user needs, according to P1. “Not all users require high-bandwith access, so our packages will be priced based on the bandwith needs specified for several types of subscriber,” Lai chipped in.
According to him, P1 is prepared to meet a surge of subscribers for P1 W1MAX.
"Our system is designed to easily scale-up not only to serve a few hundred customers but a few million,” he said.
In order to sustain good quality of service, every aspect of the network architecture needs to be scalable, he explained.
P1 is working to extend its service to cover the entire west coast of Peninsular Malaysia by year end.
Lai said that would immediately benefit those living in Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Klang, and Port Klang in Selangor, as well as those in Johor Baru, Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Malacca.
The coverage plan is in line with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission’s (SKMM) directive to deliver WiMAX to 25% of the population by March 2009. SKMM regulates the nation’s telecommunications industry.
“My team and I will be working day and night on this,” said Lai.

amiin |
