Player Ratings for Liverpool-Birmingham

Liverpool:

Pepe Reina: 6

Put in a credible performance in this game. The Reds keeper came out for crosses and was generally unfazed by Birmingham's set-pieces. Could do nothing about Benitez's short range header and Cameron Jerome's screamer from distance. Had nothing to do in the second half.

Glen Johnson: 7

Was a terror down the right flank as he bombed down the sidelines relentlessly to give Liam Ridgewell fits.

Martin Skrtel: 6

Solid and unspectacular. Did get into some jousting with Cameron Jerome though.

Daniel Agger: 6

Got about his business with minimum flair as well. Was more assured without Jamie Carragher around, surprisingly.

Emiliano Insua: 5

The Argentine left-back was a little shaky as he was pressured into mistakes by Jerome and Benitez.

Javier Mascherano: 6

The midfield enforcer was forced off the ball just before halftime as Jerome fired a missile on Liverpool's goal to score. Played a tidy game besides the goal breakdown.

Lucas (off 82'): 5

Played tidy side passes and little else. The Brazilian midfielder is playing a little too withdrawn to have an effect on the game.

Dirk Kuyt: 6

Was huffing and puffing all the way in the match. We can never doubt the Dutchman's effort, only the result.

Yossi Benayoun: 6 (off 77')

Showed glimpses of class all over midfield, but just could not deliver the final product to produce a goal or an assist. Was forced off with what seemed like a hamstring problem.

Albert Riera: 5 (off 45')

Ran like a headless chicken down the left flank. Switch flanks on occasion and ran like a headless chicken down the right flank before being forced off by injury. Did provide David Ngog with the chance to score though.

David Ngog: 8

Scored Liverpool's first goal in the 13th minute, off an exquisite left-foot volley off Riera's cross after Liverpool forced a double save from Hart. Conned the referee well for Liverpool's penalty opportunity.

Subs:

Alberto Aquilani (on 82'): 5

'The Little Prince' made his Anfield debut but saw little of the ball in this match. Now he may even see little of his boss.

Steven Gerrard (on 45'): 7

Came on just in time to see Jerome score. Insertion into the game gave Liverpool some confidence, and he played better after scoring Liverpool's equaliser from the spot-kick. Almost scored the Reds' winner in the 63rd minute but headed the ball wide.

Ryan Babel (on 77'): 5

The Dutchman replaced Yossi Benayoun, with Rafa Benitez looking to see what the winger could bring in Liverpool's time of need. He saw nothing.

Birmingham:

Joe Hart: 8

Was brilliant in goal aside from Ngog's goal. Pulled a string of saves and came out for crosses as the Brum goal was bombarded by a constant Red wave.

Stephen Carr: 7

Played as well as he could, but was vulnerable in the air. Still, he saved Hart on many occasions diving for the block.

Roger Johnson: 7

Was a virtual resident in Birmingham's penalty area as the away side defended stoutly against the waves and waves of Liverpool attacks.

Scott Dann: 7

Another veteran of the Merseyside upset, stayed in the bunkers (i.e. the penalty area) as the Reds launched numerous bombardments going forward.

Liam Ridgewell: 8

The star of Birmingham's defence as he sacrificed life, limb, and even his face to guard the Birmingham goal. Someone should give him a medal.

Sebastian Larsson: 6

The Swede tried to get forward but was constantly called on for defensive duties as Liverpool surged forward in search of the equaliser.

Lee Bowyer: 6

Was invisible after his effort on goal early in the game. Re-surfaced in the second half to get his face on the ball for a crucial block.

Teemu Tainio (off 15'): 5

Didn't contribute a whole lot as he was brought off for skipper Lee Carsley in the 15th minute.

James McFadden (off 67'): 6

The Scotsman tried to manufacture opportunities but he was shackled by Glen Johnson.

Christian Benitez (off 86'): 8

Was alert to pounce on the loose ball to score Birmingham's early equaliser. 'Chucho' was a constant thorn in Liverpool's side as his intelligent running and dribbling caused the Liverpool defence to lose its shape.

Cameron Jerome: 9

Jerome's unexpected assault on goal from long distance is good enough to earn him the Man-of-the-Match. The striker was clumsy early in the game, but his strength shook off the defence as he let one fly from another area code to score.

Subs:

Gary McSheffrey (on 86'): 6

Came on for defensive purposes. Did provide some energy for the lethargic Blues.

Lee Carsley (on 15'): 7

Came on for Teemu Tainio and provided a calming influence on his team. Provided some of that vintage Evertonian steel as well as he bossed the midfield. Unlucky to concede the penalty, as he did not come close to touching David Ngog.

Gregory Vignal (on 67'): 6

Was brought on for the disappointing McFadden. Defended adequately, better than the Scotsman at least (and that's not saying a lot).

Benitez fears the worst for duo

Liverpool's injury woes continue to mount as Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun were both taken off with suspected torn hamstrings.

Birmingham held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Monday to put even more pressure on Reds boss Rafael Benitez. They are now 11 points behind leaders Chelsea. The Spaniard will now have to grapple with more injury problems.

According to the Reds' official website, Benitez revealed that Riera was risked even though he wasn't '100% ready' while Benayoun played too many matches.

Benitez said: "Riera had the same problem as before. The players are sometimes available but not 100 per cent ready. We thought he was okay but in the end you can see he wasn't.

"Yossi has the same problem as Riera. Some players are playing too many games in a row. They are working very hard and so you always have this risk. I think both will have tears.

"Agger also had a problem with his back. It's not serious but he felt it a little bit."
