CREATIONIST GRANT LOOKS SKYWARDS
Posted 31/12/07 17:05EmailPrintSave
Chelsea 8/15, Draw 12/5, Fulham 5/1
Avram Grant is determined to continue moving his Chelsea "creation" on to bigger and better things.
The Israeli coach has come under fire from certain sections of the Stamford Bridge faithful, frustrated at a perceived lack of creativity and consistency.
While the shadow of Jose Mourinho - who brought so much success to the west-London club - may still hang over Grant's side, the 52-year-old continues to go about his business in a determined manner.
The Chelsea boss, who stepped into the dugout from his role as director of football in September, found himself subjected to chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' as he made two substitutions during the last game against Newcastle, with victory secured via a controversiol late strike from Salomon Kalou.
However, Grant will not condemn the fans for voicing their opinions, even if it is something he could do without given the continued selection problems.
Chelsea head into the new year with some eight players on the treatment table - including Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, captain John Terry, goalkeeper Petr Cech and England midfielder Frank Lampard as well as Claude Makelele, Andriy Shevchenko and Florent Malouda.
Add in the forthcoming African Nations Cup, which will further increase the pressure on resources, and Grant could easily be forgiven for thinking forces are conspiring against him.
However, the Israeli remains ever pragmatic in the face of growing pressure.
"I'd need one or two hours, not a minute," the Chelsea boss quipped when asked what he had learned about himself during 2007.
"All my life I have tried to create things - and this here at Chelsea is part of a creation.
"I have learned about myself and the team, always."
Grant added: "We need to do things to make sure we keep winning games - that is not easy, but it is possible.
"We also need to make things better. We do not just want to think about the next few months. Chelsea are bigger than this.
"It was a big challenge for the team this time last year when we only missed two players, so it is a big challenge now."
The Chelsea boss, though, prefers to focus on things he can influence.
"I could talk about the problems for a long time, but I would prefer to concentrate on the players we have got," Grant maintained.
"The squad have continued to win, and I am happy with the way we are playing."
Despite all of the criticism, Chelsea remain very much in the title shake-up.
Having lost only one Premier League game, to leaders Arsenal, since defeat at Old Trafford in his first match, Grant's men could significantly close the gap on the top two with victory over their west-London rivals Fulham tomorrow lunchtime.
"We are still in the race for all the titles," Grant declared, his team in the last 16 of the Champions League and also the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.
"We are in a good position and need to continue to focus on what we are doing, not the problems. If we manage that, we will do well."
With the transfer window set to open tomorrow, Chelsea inevitably have been linked with a number of high-profile players, including Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka.
Grant insists while the Blues are "following" several targets, for the moment there is "no news".
The Chelsea manager told reporters: "We have been linked to 2,000 players. When we have news, we will tell you.
"Our options are open. We are following players. However, we don't want only to bring players in only for the next few months because of the problems we've got at the moment.
"We're looking longer-term than that. We are thinking about everything, including what areas to concentrate on."
Grant is expecting a stern test in the short trip down Fulham Road for the lunchtime kick-off on New Year's Day.
"This is a derby and all derbies are tough," said the Chelsea manager.
"I expect it will be tough, aggressive, but also a good game." (jgn le ade lagi player celsi kene red card...   )
It will certainly be a baptism of fire for new Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson.
Former Israel coach Grant reflected: "I know he has worked at a lot of clubs, is a good manager, and I've met him a few times at Uefa and FIFA meetings.
"I wish him the all best - but starting after tomorrow." |
