KUALA LUMPUR - Ghana menjadi pasukan kedua selepas Argentina, menarik diri daripada Piala Antara Benua, namun berita baik di sebaliknya ialah peminat tanah air bakal menyaksikan kemunculan penyerang Arsenal, Emmanuel Adebayor (gambar) bersama pasukan pengganti, Togo dalam kejohanan dari Khamis ini hingga 25 Mei.
Naib Presiden Kanan Octagon Asia - penganjur bersama kejohanan, Maricar M. Iqbal berkata, Ghana membuat keputusan itu setelah persatuan bola sepaknya memecat jurulatih kebangsaan sekali gus enggan meneruskan rancangan Claude Le Roy yang mengatur penyertaan skuad belia mereka ke Piala Antara Benua.
"Ghana mengumumkan penarikan diri itu pada minggu lalu dan Togo sudah bersetuju untuk menggantikannya malah nama Adebayor turut tersenarai di antara tiga pemain senior yang turut dibenarkan menyertai kejohanan bawah 23 tahun pertama ini," kata Iqbal kepada Utusan Malaysia, semalam.
Namun, kemunculan Adebayor, 24, yang pernah beraksi dalam Piala Dunia di Jerman, dua tahun lalu dan penjaring kedua terbanyak Liga Perdana England (EPL) dengan 24 gol, bakal mengubati kehampaan peminat setelah Argentina dan bintang Barcelonanya, Lionel Messi menarik diri kerana kekecohan liga tempatan mereka.
Adebayor yang setinggi 1.90 meter atau nama sebenarnya, Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor berasal dari Lome, Togo, pernah mewakili kelab FC Metz, AS Monaco dan Arsenal sejak 2001 selain menjaringkan 16 gol sepanjang 37 penampilan antarabangsa bersama pasukan kebangsaan Togo.
Togo akan membuka kempen Piala Antara Benua dalam Kumpulan B iaitu menentang Chile yang menggantikan Argentina dan dua lagi pasukan ialah Australia dan Croatia dengan kesemuanya akan beraksi di Stadium Bola Sepak Kuala Lumpur mulai Jumaat ini.
Malaysia yang dibimbing B. Sathianathan, menganggotai Kumpulan A dengan Nigeria di samping Iraq dan Ireland yang memiliki bintang EPL lain seperti Anthony Stokes (Sunderland), Eddie Nolan, Keith Treacy dan Alan Judge (Blackburn Rovers), Karl Moore (Manchester City) dan Shane Lowry (Aston Villa).
Hanya Nigeria dan Australia merupakan dua pasukan bawah 23 tahun yang telah layak ke Sukan Olimpik Beijing, Ogos ini.
