oic..thanks dexa, because i always feel confuse when people type the words 'in' or 'at' by refering to the place

yeah chipmunk you are right about it. It bit difficult to use these 2 simply because in malay language we just use 'di'. at may be we can use it as ' di ' while in we probably as ' dalam '.

hi everyone!

i am new in this particular board
i have been with cari for quite a while but somehow today i felt like looking into this board and voila, i found this very useful thread!
a great thread indeed

well, i can only come in once in a while
piles of work - not news huh?

anyway, my english is not that good but i believe it is not that bad either
i thank my parents who consistently support my sister and i when we were young
they bought us books and brought back video tapes for movies like the sound of music and oliver
and they speak in english with us
every day!

though we are both local graduates, sometimes people are quite surprised that we can speak fairly well
please do not misunderstood me as being too proud ya?

now i am using the same method with my child
though she is still very young, i have started to converse in english with her

anyway, keep up the good work here
and i will try to assist if i may wherever i could!

hi cik dee_na..
i like your story, if i had my own children I'd ensure  them to speak more than one language.
I think your parents know how important English language is. I dont think you are being proud here about yourself because you can speak english fluently. Indeed you are very lucky because your parents encouraged their children to speak English at home. That is one good way on how to master one of international languages.

My late dad could speak English fairly and Japanese fluently but he never teach us both languages. I saw him as a strong nationalist and wanted us to speak in our mother tongue  at home. His favourite songs all about Malaysia and how we reached Independence. Only once awhile he sang Japanese songs but all those songs were about beautiful country, how Jap people appreciate the beauty of their country.  Sometimes i popped him  some questions why he didnt teach us other language. He said he had been through a lot during World war II, whenever we speak the conquerors' languages it revived his bad memory of the war. Poor dad, it must be very hard for him to forget the war because he lost most of his relatives  to  the war and  famine. The famine during that time was really unbearable.

Although he doesnt like foreign language, he never stop us from using it at home. If we spoke to him in English he'd reply in my mother tongue. If i had homework in English and needed his help he said I should refer to my wee dictionary because it explained every single meaning of the word.

In term of music, all my siblings were into English songs.  My sisters used to buy Tina Turner casette and turned the whole house into rock party! hahahaha... what's love got to do,  got do with it . And my parents just said, oh dear they turned our house into concert stage . although most of my siblings were into English song, I was the only one who couldnt understand English language.  I learned English through the hardest way and I couldnt pick up the language easily. And the rest of my story you can flipped back to earlier page

hi eva

wow, i really respect anyone who can speak in more than 2 languages
my grandfather for instance, can speak japanese
not sure how he picked up the language but my dad told me that he was a friend of one japanese chap
he can also converse in arabic (he is of arabic descendent - my great grandfather was an arab) with my grandmother but i was too little to learn the language
imagine, if i can converse in those languages plus english and malay - probably i would not end up what i am doing now!
hehehehe.....

i am still keeping my ambition to learn at least 3 more languages
waiting for my kids to grow up a little bit then probably i can go to class with them

music!
oh i just love them..
thank Allah my kid (i only have one and another is on the way!! ) is so far looking like she is not tone deaf

well, at the moment i am attached with one private university in selangor and my employers and some colleagues are some from the UK
we have to converse in english
and proper english mind you!

ok time's up
i will come back later!

nice to get to knoe you dexa and eva!

Cik Dee Na...

I hope mommy and baby are doing great today

cik dee na, your grandpa can speak Japenese and Arabic? woow.. That's totally mind blowing. How he can manage to do that?

you are kind of ambitious person cik dee na, keep it up. I personally speak bahasa and English fairly and I can understand Arabic and Hindi / Urdu a bit. Call me i am crazy with hindustan movies but infact I dont fancy to watch their movies at all. I actually a big fan of hindi soaps and all their soaps are much better than their own movies and they have good English translation too. So it helps me a lot to understand their language and culture. One funny thing when I was working with Asian Community centre near my place, one of our colleagues tried to pass some information to other friend and they purposely spoke in Urdu/Hindi so I would not understand about things they wanted to say. Unfortunately I knew about it and laughed. Both looked at me and asked why I was laughing. I told them in plain English about their 'secret'   and I said it was ok coz mein samjhe urdu thodi thodi.. and your secret is safe  with me

United Kingdom is a big country with different English dialects. The best English language is Queen's English and the worst some people say is Cockney but I think glaswegian language . I hope your colleagues are not from East london area @ Cockney  because Cockney people always said innit in their conversation . If they speak proper English, certainly they are well educate and probably comes from good family background. Do share with us some good experience with them especially on how they start conversation with you. ;)

Ok i need to stop now coz i need to answer the call of nature

well eva
i guess with no television and hardly a radio in ones house back then, may have prompted my grandfather to learn these languages
i supposed the arabic he learnt from his father while japanese from the japanese chap!
i plan to enrol my kids into mandarin classes
so to check their work and to understand whether they are saying anything about me in that language requires me to at least learn mandarin, don't you think?
well, this is just my plan but the future, who knows
i supposed i'll just cross the bridge when i come to it

well, my colleagues - none of them are from the east london area - thank goodness
they all speak proper english as they are mostly educators

ok eva
time's up
i want to go home and play with my kid

and yes, the baby and mommy is good thank you!

How about that Japanese lad, can he speak Bahasa as well?
You are so right about Mandrin cik dee na. Again quite agree with your points about in order for you to help your children out with their homeworks, you need to know Mandrin too. I just wondering if you know if there are free  Mandrin classes for non students in local universities? I know UIA has offered free Arabic classes for non students in the evening and weekend. They have volunteers to teach mostly pakcik2 and makcik2 on how to converse in basic Arabic properly. I hope other local university also provides the same community service such as free mandrin, japanese or english classes to the public.

Thank goodness  your colleagues are all ok , at least you dont have to wonder what is the real meaning of innit ( isnt it ) LOL .

i like spanish too...
there are free spanish classes at local community centre over here and students turn up is amazing. but i never managed to attend those classes because i had to go for work at 10 and they start the class at 11.00....

anyway... just forget it. someday i'll try to enrol myself to theirclasses but dunno when

children and language... ermmm i've got one story about my second cousin
she is a busy career woman and very commited to her career and her family.
when she had her first baby, she had to juggle between career n her new son.
no one in her family could help her to look after her son whille she was at work.
therefore she went to maid agency and hired a Filipino maid who spoke english fluently.

everthing went ok cause  my cousin felt happy with her maid. she was friendly and very hardworking woman with positive attitude. years went by and my lil nephew started to speak. my cousin was delighted because she spoke with her son only in malay and english.   and of course he was good at both languages.

but one day..
my cousin n her family went to our grandpa's house at kampung. my grandpa had roaster, hens n chicks at his farm. as city boy my lil nephew so excited and curious about chicks  so he went closer to the chick and tried to catch it with his bare  lil hands but the chicks' mom thought it was abig threat to her children ran amok to my nephew and pecked his lil hand. he was shocked and ran to his mom crying.

my cousin panicked and asked what's wrong.. n her son started to say... ' mommy.. manok.. bla bla bla' fluently in Tagalog . my cousin was like.. what   said it again son? n her son kept saying words in english n tagalog repeatedly.. .

my cousin was   awww noooo my maid turned my son into filipino .:@ :@ :@ :@ . the last time i heard about her maid, she gave up her job nad returned home.

actually when my cousin left her son and her maid at home, she used tagalog all the time with my lil nephew,

i think... I'll be going to Australia..is the right sentence because after go we must use to not for.
if you want to use for.. you got to say.. I'll be leaving for Australia.

make it as a habit to say ' go to' and ' leave for ' .

if you want to use for.. you got to say

common mistake that we make -

you want to     you got to -

better to write:
if you want to use for...  you have to say ...

then it's not only sound better
it is grammatically correct -

-  hope it helps -

I was brought up in a small town called Mersing. Then moved to Kuala Pilah when my late father retired. In Kuala Pilah, the teacher taught English in Bahasa Malaysia. In spite of being a Kampung Girl, I love listening to English song, especially the "Oldies". I must say that the lyrics  did helped with the vocabulary. After SPM, I continued my study at UiTM. Most of the subjects were taught in English and since all the reference books were also in English, you had to answer the exam paper in English too. My English may not be as good as Dexa's, but I'm always proud to tell everyone that I graduated from a local    University called UiTM.
How's that Dexa?
