Age and injuries temper enthusiasm for Michael Owen as atransfer target, especially if you crave the quick fix of a glamoroussuperstar signing. Press and media love to magnify problems - they giveplayers an easy label, and it sticks. 'Owen's Injury Gloom', 'OwenDropped Again', 'Owen's Fall'.
SAF however knows better than tobe influenced by the press. If SAF signs Michael Owen, he will bedoing what SAF is never afraid of doing- being his own man. SigningMichael Owen on a free could be the shrewdest deal of this transferwindow.
1.With Newcastle, a team low on confidence and finallyrelegated, Owen managed 26 goals in71, better than Carlos Tevez's 19 in63 for United -and we supposedly couldn't live without him a few weeksago!
2.With no transfer fee, United's only overhead is Owen'scontract, and if his wage demands frightened off other clubs don't besurprised if Owen has been willing to reduce his demands for the chanceto play at the very top again. This was United's advantage over otherclubs outside the top four, and SAF would have seen the opportunity toplay that card. In terms of overhead, United no longer pay Ronaldo orTevez, soare probably happy to meet Owen's wage demands and I bet Owenhas compromised his demands.
3. With Owen, SAF gets amodel professional. He'll start, or he'll come off the bench. He'lldo whatever SAF asks of him. No prima donna antics. No hissy fits.No disloyalty. He'll get a player that will relish the chance SAFis giving him, and if he remains injury free he'll sweat his last dropto show SAF was right to have faith in him.
4. Everyoneknows United have lost 2 strikers. By adding one striker to the squad on"a free", United send out the message that they are not going to beheld to ransom for a striker for an inflated price.
Unitedstill have that £80m in the bank. Now SAF gets one more option forsquad rotation next season. If the right players are available and wantto come, SAF can bid without a look of desperation which could haveput United over a barrel in negotiations. We may still get ashow-case signing this summer, but that would be missing the point aboutwhy SAF is taking on Micheal Owen. |

Reds capture Owen
[quote]
Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has signed Michael Owen on a two-year contract. The striker was out of contract, so no transfer fee is involved.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question. Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish. |

yup mmg dh kompem die la yg lead konsortium dr mesia
Revealed: Man who wants Toon
A RECLUSIVE Malaysian billionaire has jumped to the head of the queue to buy Newcastle.
Media mogul Ananda Krishnan is closing in on a deal to end Mike Ashley's nightmare two-year Toon reign - and hopes to make an announcement early next week.
The £95million deal for the club represents loose change to the 71-year-old, who is South East Asia's third-richest man worth £4.5billion.
Other consortia remain in the running to buy the crisis club.
But after making the first significant move in the drawn-out sale, Krishnan is the favourite to take control after meeting Ashley's drastically-reduced asking price - almost £40m less than the sportswear tycoon paid in 2007.
The owner-in-waiting is believed to favour Alan Shearer to be the club's manager.
Like Ashley, Krishnan has kept a low profile as he has built up a powerful business portfolio which includes major interests in oil, entertainment, telecoms and shipping.
Over the years, he has donated millions of pounds to charities and a source said: "Mr Krishnan shuns public exposure and likes to keep a low profile for someone of his stature."
Figures have yet to be confirmed but a significant kitty would be made available for Shearer to use in the transfer market. |
