FA reject appeal for Chelsea's Cole
The Football Association has rejected Chelsea's appeal against the red card received by Ashley Cole in the 4-4 draw with Aston Villa.
Cole became the third player to be dismissed in a pulsating Boxing Day encounter as referee Phil Dowd adjudged that he had handled Gabriel Agbonlahor's header on the line.
The result was a penalty for Aston Villa in stoppage time and Gareth Barry scored to deny Chelsea victory.
However, the appeal has now been rejected and Cole must now serve a one-match ban which will see him miss Saturday's home game against Newcastle.

CHELSEA 2-1 KOTABARU BERSATU
A controversial late winner helped Chelsea steal the points against a much improved Newcastle side at Stamford Bridge.
The key moment came three minutes from time, Claudio Pizarro shot from the edge of the box took a deflection and the ball landed to Salomon Kalou, who despite looking clearly offside, rounded the keeper and slipped the ball into the net.
Chelsea had initially taken the lead on 29 minutes through Michael Essien, who took advantage of another fortunate break of the ball after Shaun Wright-Phillips'striker from the edge of the box.
Newcastle though could have already been a goal up at that point, as Obafemi Martins should have converted a one-on-one, but his indecision in front of goal meant that Alex was able to track back and tackle the Newcastle striker.
The Magpies did bring the scores level on 56 minutes, Charles N'Zogbia did most the work with a good run down the left and his cross was bundled in from close range by Nicky Butt.
But Sam Allardyce and the Newcastle players were left fuming by Chelsea's winning goal, which sees they stay in touch with the pacesetters at the top of the table. |

Grant shrugs off Chelsea fans frustration
Chelsea boss Avram Grant refused to condemn the fans who chanted: 'You don't know what you're doing' at him during the second half of their 2-1 victory over Newcastle.
The home fans were unhappy with his substitutions as they toiled to overcome Newcastle. Grant was abused and booed when he replaced Joe Cole and Michael Ballack with Claudio Pizarro and Scott Sinclair.
It was the first time he had been targeted by the boo-boys since taking over Jose Mourinho in September. Neither did he have any views about Kalou's controversial winner - claiming he had yet to see a TV replay of it.
But Grant said: "I have not seen the television but we created so many chances today so we deserved to win anyway. We created eight or 10 good chances.
"I think the supporters are behind us. They know we are not having an easy time with all the problems we have. We continue to fight but it is not easy.
"This is the time to speak about the players who played. They showed good football in the first half and a lot of character at the end of the game.
"The substitutions were made because Joe Cole had an injury and Michael Ballack has not played so many games, but we needed him because of the injuries. We can cause him a problem if we let him play for 90 minutes at the moment. But I will not be pessimistic today." |
