Reports in Italy suggest Manchester United have entered the chase for AC Milan’s teenage star Alexandre Pato after being outbid by Real Madrid for number one target Karim Benzema. Chelsea have been attempting to bring the young Brazilian to Stamford Bridge all summer but Sir Alex has now expressed a strong interest.

It’s of no surprise that two of the wealthiest clubs in the world are chasing the 19-year-old as he enjoyed a fantastic season and his age marks him down as a terrific prospect. Last season Pato scored 15 league goals in 36 league games for Milan (27 starts) which was the 5th best record in Serie A and only one goal behind Real Madrid new boy Kaka.

Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva was born in Pato Branco, Parano and was given the nickname ‘Pato’ in honour of his place of birth. The Portuguese translation of ‘Pato’ is ‘The Duck’ which he has been called by many commentators.

The Brazilian joined club side Internacional aged 11 despite growing up supporting their fierce rivals Gremio. Unfortunately the same year Pato found a potentially malignant tumour in his arm which occurred after he broke it. The family could not afford to have it removed despite the threat of it becoming cancerous within two months. Fortunately a friend of the family operated on it for free.

Pato made his league debut in November 2006 scoring in a 4-1 away win v Palmeiras aged 17. The following season he made 9 league appearances (8 starts) scoring 5 goals. He also scored twice in five Copa Libertadores matches. This impressive form prompted AC Milan to sign him in August 2007. However, due to Italian football regularions concerning non-EU minors he was not able to play an official match for the club until January 2008. However, he was able to play in friendlies and scored in his first friendly appearance v Dynamo Kiev in September 2007.

The Brazilian teen also scored on his Serie A debut for the club against Napoli in a 5-2 win. That first season he scored an impressive 9 goals in 18 league appearances (13 starts). Last season the 19-year-old bettered that tally with 15 league goals as he became a regular in the Milan starting line-up. This form has prompted much praise which includes David Beckham and Carlo Ancelotti. Beckham said, “I have seen him in training and on the pitch. He is only 19 years of age and I can think he can become one of the greatest players in the world.”

New Chelsea manager Ancelotti said, “He has an incredible shot and great speed. In fact, he is twice as fast as a normal athlete.” Therefore, it’s no surprise he wants the youngster with him at the Bridge.

Real steal Kar from United
United were last night handed another bitter blow by Real Madrid as the Spaniards signed Lyon star Karim Benzema for £30million. SunSport had told you exclusively weeks ago that France striker Benzema was the man Old Trafford chief Alex Ferguson wanted to replace Carlos Tevez. But free-spending Real president Florentino Perez nabbed the ace to leave Fergie reeling - just three weeks after finally prising Cristiano Ronaldo away with a world-record £80m move. Benzema, 22, became Madrid's fourth signing so far this summer after the capture of Ronaldo and the £62m deal for Kaka from Milan and Raul Albiol's £13m move from Valencia.

The tabloid also says reported United transfer target Franck Ribery will leave Bayern Munich - but only for Real Madrid. "I have made up my mind, I want to leave. It will be Real Madrid or nothing," the winger is quoted as saying.

After missing out on Benzema, the Daily Mirror says Sir Alex is pressing ahead with his interest in Atletico Madrid playmaker Sergio Aguero, who is likely to cost £40m.

In other news, The Sun claims Sir Alex's son Darren faces a battle with his dad to sign Stockport County centre-half Josh Thompson.

Meanwhile, the Daily Star reckons Fraizer Campbell will complete his move to Hull once he has resolved his cash dispute with United.

Cristiano Ronaldo made a flying visit to Manchester to say goodbye to his old boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The star striker got a private jet from Portugal for a discreet meal with the United manager, who he called his “second father”. They met at one of Sir Alex’s favourite restaurants in the swish Alderley Edge Hotel, just a few hundred yards from Ronaldo’s former home in Cheshire.

A source at the hotel said: “It was a low-key affair. Cristiano just wanted to say thanks for everything Sir Alex had done for him.”

Sir Alex paid a gushing tribute to the 24-year-old footballer following Monday’s meal.

He said: “Cristiano has been a marvellous player for Manchester United. His six years at Old Trafford have seen him develop into the best footballer in the world. He has been a major factor in the club’s success and everyone here wishes him well in his future.”

The Portuguese player is moving to Real Madrid in a record £80million deal.

A club source said: “No one expected Cristiano to ever return to Manchester, except if Real Madrid play here. He’s instructed his people to clear out his home and sort out his cars.”

Police were called to Ronaldo’s house on Tuesday following a burglary scare. A neighbour saw an open window and heard an alarm, but it was a false alert. In Lisbon, fiery Ronaldo has already hit out at journalists, smashing the car window of photographer Hugo Martins, 35.

Cristiano Ronaldo investigated by police over alleged attack on 17-year-old girl

Cristiano Ronaldo is being investigated by police over an alleged attack on a 17-year-old girl.

It’s alleged the footballer kicked in the window of the girl’s car after he became angry that she had been video taping him in the street.

It’s claimed the victim was taken to hospital where she was treated for cuts on her arm before reporting the incident to police. It’s been reported that the teenager may have been a in a car with a freelance paparazzi photographer who had allegedly been following the star.

Talking about the incident Ronaldo’s management said: “Ronaldo was the victim of a trap by the paparazzi which ended up in a confrontation between those involved, after the best player in the world and his mother were the target of persecution on the streets of Lisbon."

Ronaldo added himself:

"The incident involved an individual who unfortunately does not care what he does to achieve his aims, who I have seen standing for days on end in front of my house, eating yoghurts and holding a camera in his hand, waiting for anything newsworthy to happen, and who due to frustration and boredom changed his strategy. He chased me from the car outside the Ritz Hotel to the Expo area, which is where my apartment is. I was accompanied by my mother, and he by a young woman who throughout our whole journey ostensibly and provocatively filmed all our movements. This persecution caused my mother to be so disturbed and upset that I had to stop my car to try to convince them to leave us in peace."

He continued: "When I'm on my own, fine, I try to swallow it and remain indifferent. But when my mother is involved, then I'm sorry but I don't let anyone, I repeat anyone, harass her. I regret what I did, but I can't promise that I would not react in the same way again in the same circumstances, because when my mother is involved it is very difficult for me to keep a calm state of mind.”

The Daily Star agrees that United's next signing will be coming from Ligue 1, but insists it will be 23-year-old Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, rather than Benzema. The £11m-rated forward was the top scorer in the French top flight last term, bagging 24 goals.
