Grant refuses to drop title ambitions at Chelsea
![](http://www.tribalfootball.com/images2/spacer.gif)
Avram Grant insists Chelsea will draw on all their reserves of strength as they confront the latest setback in a troubled season at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea trail leaders Manchester United by seven points and any further slip-ups during the Christmas schedule would leave their hopes of wrestling the title back from Old Trafford in ruins. But Grant is refusing to raise the white flag and has steeled Stamford Bridge for the hardship ahead. "As long as we have a chance we will do everything we can to catch Manchester United and Arsenal," he said. "We have character and will not give up. We will do anything to challenge them. "This job has been a big challenge from the day I started it and I will accept this latest challenge. "Football is always a big test when you have a bad time. It's not easy but this is the situation and we'll make the best of it. "I'm waiting for the day when I can be like other managers and have all my players available. I think that time will come one day." |

Chelsea consider van der Vaart move, but do they really need him? (bace sampai muntah... )
A report in today's Telegraph suggests that Chelsea are weighing up a move for Hamburg's Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, who has been enjoying an excellent season in the German Bundesliga for his current side.
Chelsea have been looking for additions to their team as they look to get the best out of Shevchenko now that they have realised that through various injuries and African Cup commitments Didier Drogba is unlikely to see much action for them in the next couple of months. This means that unless Chelsea concentrate on finding another striker of sufficient quality to represent a better option than what they already have, but one who is happy to take a back-seat when Drogba returns, they have to look to providing service to Shevchenko that he flourishes on.
It is no secret that the club have been disappointed with the return from their expensively acquired striker although publicly they continue to support the former AC Milan and Dynamo Kiev striker. However, since Avram Grant's appointment there has been a change of attitude to acknowledge that the club are as culpable in not providing the service that Shevchenko flourishes with. With this policy in mind the club have now started looking for a player with similar capabilities to Kaka, who is out of bounds, who set up so many goals for this former colleague when they played together at AC Milan.
Having discounted Frank Lampard as an option to get the service through to Shevchenko Chelsea are believed to have selected Rafael van der Vaart the current Hamburg midfielder as the most suitable player to replicate Kaka's passes. van der Vaart has had an excellent season with the North German club, who are currently in 3rd place, largely inspired by the talented Dutchman, who has 9 goals in 14 games in the League, as well as several in the UEFA Cup, for which Hamburg qualified from as group winners on Thursday evening.
It is no secret that van der Vaart is looking for a move away from Hamburg and has openly expressed his desire to play in one of the "big leagues", by which he meant Spain, Italy or England. The playmaker has been with Hamburg for three seasons since arriving from Ajax for a mere 5 million Euros, after being the subject of a lot of abuse from fans in the country for his intermittent performances in the national colours and Ajax's difficulty in finding a place for him with Wesley Sneijder also in the midfield.
Arriving at Hamburg has served as a release for the player away from the weight of expectation in Holland and he has flourished in the less technical environs of the Bundesliga, his form catching the eye of several major European clubs in the process. In fact he was close to a move to Valencia in the summer, going so far as to pose in a Valencia shirt but the German club blocked the move. Initially it seemed as if the Hamburg fans would turn on their star player, something they have a reputation for (just ask Boubacar Sanogo) but van der Vaart's brilliant performances have turned the side into one of the leading contenders this season and he was quickly forgiven.
However, the transfer rumours won't go away especially after he was seen talking animatedly into long into the night with his agent, Soren Lerby, a former PSV player and a close friend of Chelsea technical manager Frank Arnesen, and another individual after the match in Zagreb against Dinamo a fortnight ago.
More weight was lent to transfer speculation last night when Gunter Netzer, a former German national player turned TV pundit providing punditry for German channel ZDF said "HSV will not be able to keep hold of van der Vaart", so it looks like van der Vaart is leaving, the question is where. His team-mates also see his departure as an inevitability handing him a shirt with "van der Verrat" (a pun on his name, Verrat means treason in German) ironically printed on the back as his Christmas present at the club's recent Christmas-do.
Chelsea aren't the only team to express an interest in the player; Juventus have also made a 17 million Euro bid for the player and have a contract worth around 5 million Euros to the player ready for him to sign. Hamburg have also readied a new contract for him to sign to extend his contract until 2012 making him the best paid player in the history of the club.
The question is: Do Chelsea need van der Vaart? Avram Gant is thought to long term want to change Chelsea's formation into a 4-3-3 looking to replicate the style of Barcelona and see van der Vaart as the ideal player to perform the Messi role from the right hand side. The only problem with that is that it doesn't fit into the plan of getting in a player to perform the Kaka role to Shevchenko, who played as a withdrawn forward in AC Milan's 4-4-2 formation.
We've already touched on van der Vaart's problems playing for 'Oranje' the Dutch national team and has been used mainly as the right sided forward in a 4-3-3 formation by Marco van der Basten. However, his performances have been poor and in truth he has seldom replicated his club form for his country. He is usually seen as the ideal No. 10 playing behind either one or two strikers, depending on how adventurous the manger is feeling. His performances posted on the right side of the attack have meant that largely he has been anonymous, which is the exact position Chelsea have in mind for the midfielder long term.
van der Vaart simply isn't suitable for being used as the right side of a front three forward as he lacks the explosive pace of a player like Messi or Robinho, so important in getting away from generally quicker full-backs. Furthermore the position doesn't suit his best strengths, which are passing and ability to see a pass and make runs from deep and such abilities are best showcased from the middle. Therefore being used by Juventus as the replacement for the ageing del Piero, the archetypal Number 10, may be more appealing to van der Vaart, rather than being seen as some sort of Robinho or Messi clone. |

BLUES MISSING LAMPARD
Posted 28/12/07 08:29EmailPrintSave
Chelsea 3/10, Draw 10/3, Newcastle 8/1
Chelsea's preparations for Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash with Newcastle have been hit by the loss of Frank Lampard to a torn thigh muscle.
Lampard is expected to return "within a few weeks", after sustaining the damage to his right leg in the first half of the enthralling 4-4 Boxing Day draw at home to Aston Villa.
"The tear is not in the same leg that Frank injured earlier this season," said a club statement.
"He will begin his rehabilitation immediately, and we hope to have him back playing within a few weeks."
Lampard's injury is the latest setback for Chelsea who already appear set to host Newcastle without the injured Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and John Terry and suspended Ricardo Carvalho and Ashley Cole.
England left-back Cole could yet figure, however, after appealing against the red card received for handling a shot on the line against Villa.
One silver lining has emerged from a demoralising couple of days for the Blues, in the shape of Andriy Shevchenko's lively display against Villa.
Striker Shevchenko took his tally for the season to eight after plundering two goals, the second a superb 25-yard effort, and setting up a third for Alex. :pompom: :pompom: :pompom: :pompom:
Shevchenko will spearhead Chelsea's assault on Newcastle once again as Drogba recovers from knee surgery - and the Ukraine striker is relishing the responsibility.
"I feel I played well against Villa, but for me the result of the team is more important," he said.
"It's a little disappointing, because Chelsea need to win. The result was crazy. Two teams tried to play a good game.
"But I feel much better, and my confidence is good. I want to play every game and do my best on the pitch. I feel I played well.
"I enjoyed my second goal - it was a nice goal, a good shot. But I prefer Alex's goal, because it was a fantastic combination.
"He is a defender. But that was good movement, and it was a nice goal." |
