Paul Rosolie ni tahu tak yang anaconda tu sejenis ular constrictor. Dia akan belit sampai mangsanya lemas dan mati. Jadi kemungkinan besar dia sudah mati sebelum dia masuk dalam mulut ular tersebut.

‘Eaten alive’ documentary draws flak

IMAGINE being “eaten alive” by a green anaconda, one of the largest snakes in the world, to raise awareness for the Amazon rainforest.

It’s not exactly the first thing that comes to mind for an awareness campaign, but that’s what American naturalist Paul Rosolie did on the Discovery Channel’s Eaten Alive documentary that was aired on Sunday in the United States.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to planned as Rosolie hoped.

He left viewers disappointed after he had to get his crew to rescue him after the anaconda only started to put its mouth over Rosolie’s head.

The stunt took Rosolie and his team two years to plan. They prepared an armoured suit that came with a three-hour supply of oxygen and built-in cameras and microphone, given a capsule to transmit his vital signs, and smothered him with pig’s blood in an attempt to disguise himself as a wild boar.

After suiting up, he approached the anaconda on all fours and presented himself as a willing meal for the giant snake. The snake then strikes him in the face before coiling  around his body.

However, things got a little too tight for Rosolie’s liking before he had to call for his team to help him get out of the anaconda’s killer hold.

The documentary received outcry from viewers, saying that they felt cheated and disappointed after Rosolie failed to get “eaten” alive by the snake.

Animal activists also slammed Rosolie and the network, fearing for the welfare of the snake.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) vice-president Lisa Lange expressed her disappointment that Discovery Channel aired the “inexcusable torment of a captured wild green anaconda” despite protests.

“The animals were removed from their water habitat and transported to a filming location, and the chosen snake was deceived into using her precious energy reserves to constrict a human being pretending to be a pig, all for a publicity stunt,” said Lange in a statement.

She explained that under natural conditions, anacondas can go months between meals and eat only when necessary because it takes the animal a tremendous amount of energy to attack, constrict and consume its prey.

“Paul Rosolie and his crew put this snake through undeniable stress and robbed her of essential bodily resources. She was forced to constrict and then not allowed to eat,” said Lange.

“Study after study has shown that entertainment features such as this one that show humans interfering with and handling wild animals are detrimental to species conservation.

“Rosolie knows this. Discovery knows this. Yet they chose to contrive and air this shameful stunt for ratings anyway,” she said.

I can’t help but to agree with Lange in thinking that the documentary is a publicity stunt. There are other ways Rosolie could have raised awareness on the plight of the Amazon.

But one thing is for sure, he certainly made people talk. Many of them aren’t saying very positive things, and many aren’t even talking about the Amazon.

Rosolie has a lot of experiences dealing with snakes, so he should know that the anaconda (the world’s heaviest and one of the world’s longest snakes) constricts until it has suffocated its prey. No human is a match for it, and I’m sure that no human can be consumed by the predator and survive the ordeal.

However, Discovery Channel is standing by the documentary and defending Rosolie’s efforts, saying that he had noble intentions.

"Paul created this challenge to get maximum attention for one of the most beautiful and threatened parts of the world, the Amazon Rainforest and its wildlife,” said a spokesman for Discovery Channel.

“He went to great lengths to send this message and it was his absolute intention to be eaten alive.

"Ultimately, after the snake constricted Paul for over an hour and went for his head, the experiment had to be called off when it became clear that Paul would be very seriously injured if he continued.

“The safety of Paul, as well as the anaconda, was always our number-one priority,” said the spokesman.

According to Rosolie's website, he is an author and award-winning wildlife filmmaker.

He travelled with poachers to document the black market trade in endangered species, and he has learnt about the Amazon’s flora and fauna from indigenous trackers.

He seems very passionate about the Amazon and the environment, and I admire the work he has done to raise awareness on these issues. But maybe trying to get eaten by an anaconda wasn’t the best way to do it.

I sincerely hope that Rosolie learnt his lesson and shy away from being swallowed by predators. However, a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live got me worried ...

Kimmel suggested that given the title of the documentary, he should consider being eaten alive by a different animal.

“I mean, I think I owe it to the people of planet earth to get eaten by something, no?” Rosolie replied.

I really hope he is joking.

What do you think about Rosolie's efforts to raise awareness on the Amazon rainforest by being "eaten alive" by an anaconda? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
