EVACUEES TOLD TO TAKE IODINE
Victims leaving the area near the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have been told they should take iodine to counteract the effects of radiation.
Taken as pills or syrup, stable iodine can be used to help protect against thyroid cancer in the case of radioactive exposure in a nuclear accident.
The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency also said radiation at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant had stabilised at 'significantly higher' levels than normal, but these were still in a range allowing onsite recovery measures.
Earlier this week, the IAEA said Japan had provided 230,000 units of stable iodine to evacuation centres as a precautionary measure in the nuclear emergency.
'Radiation levels near Fukushima Daiichi and beyond have elevated since the reactor damage began,' the agency said.
'However, dose rates in Tokyo and other areas outside the 30-kilometre zone remain far from levels which would require any protective action. In other words they are not dangerous to human health,' it said.
A World Health Organization study two decades ago of the 1986 meltdown at Chernobyl, the most recent nuclear accident that affected a large population, estimated that up to 9,000 people could eventually die as a result of radiation exposure from the power plant. |

Three of the Fukushima Fifty rushed to hospital with radiation poisoning as panicked Tokyo residents clear shop shelves of bottled water
By Richard Shears and Matt Blake
Last updated at 11:09 AM on 24th March 2011
* Men stood in irradiated water which seeped through protective gear
* Tokyo convenience stores all but run out of bottled water
* Families with babies get three half-litre bottles of water a day for each infant
* City officials appeal for calm
* Death toll rises to 9,700 while missing number 16,500
Three of the Fukushima Fifty have been rushed to hospital with radiation poisoning as they battle to save Japan's crippled power plant from nuclear meltdown.
Fumio Matsuda, a spokesman for the nuclear safety agency, said the three workers, two in their 20s and one in his 30s, came face to face with the danger they had all feared when contaminated water came into contact with their skin at the Fukushima Dai-chi plant.
Officials said they were standing in irradiated water in the No.3 reactor when it somehow seeped through their protective gear, causing them to be contaminated with a level of radiation almost twice as high as the accepted 'safe' limit. |
